To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I,JorrN A. SHEA, citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Hangers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garment hangers and more particularly to that class or such hangers as are made use of in clothing stores for the purpose of displaying coats and other articles of wearing apparel, and which include an extensible coat-hanger support.

It is the primary aim of the present invention to provide in an extensible hanger of this class, means for automatically extending the same upon opening of the door of'a cabinet or case within which the hanger is arranged.

In the instance of the present invention the member to be extended is in the nature of a hanger-rod, and this rod is provided at its forward end with a suction cup device which cooperates with the inner face of the door in such manner that when the door is moved to open position, the adherence of the cup to the face of the door will result in the hanger rod being pulled out to extended position.

This application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 708,716, filed July 10, 1912, in which the construction of the hanger in connection with which the device of the present invention is employed, is fully described and shown.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of so much of the hanger as is necessary to illustrate the present invention and its application. Fig. 2

is a plan view illustrating the manner in which the suction cup at the end of the hanger rod is arranged to coeperate with the door of the case or cabinet within which the hanger is arranged. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view illustrating the suction device in detail.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

As stated, the hanger proper forms the subject-matter of my co-pending application and consequently will only be briefly described herein.

The hanger includes a guide 1 which is the garment hanger in' the manner shown in.

A bracket 1' extends laterally and up wardly from the rod 3 and is provided with a sleeve 5 in which is slidably fitted a hanger rod 6, it being understood that this hanger rod being slidable with the sleeve may be positioned to extend beyond the forward end of the slide 2 or to extend beside the said slide. This hanger rod 6 is auxiliary to the rod 3 and serves as a suspension means for the garment hangers which have been disengaged from the rod 3 for the purpose of displaying the garments hung therefrom. The forward movement of the hanger rod 6 is limited by a stop or head 7 located at its rear end, this head being designed to abut against the rear end of the sleeve 5.

The means above mentioned as provided for the purpose of automatically sliding the rod 6 forwardly when the door is moved to open position, consists of a suction cup 8 which is secured at the forward end of the rod 6 by means of a screw 9, the head of which is embewi n the neck of the cup, the concaved side of the cup being presented forwardly.

By referring to Fig. 2 of the drawing it will be apparent that when the door is closed its inner face will strike against the cup 8, whereupon the cup will adhere to the door so that when the door is swung to open position a forward pull will be exerted upon the rod thereby sliding the same forwardly to about the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The cup 2, will of course, disengage from the door when the door has been partly opened.

By referring to Fig. 3 of the drawing it will be noted that the forward end portion of the rod 6 is threaded, as indicated at 10 and a circular head 11 is formed axially with an opening 12, the Wall of which is threaded, and this head is adjustably fitted onto the end of the rod 6 and serves as an abutment to limit the sliding movement of the rod 6 by striking against the forward end of the sleeve in which this rod is slidably mounted. It will be apparent that by adjusting this head 11 upon the rod 6, the forward end of the rod, or more specifically the cup 8 may be positioned a greater or less distance in advance of the forward end of the slide 2 when the rod 6 is slid inwardly until the head 11 abuts against the sleeve 5. In this manner, the cup may be adjusted with relation to the face of the door when the latter is in closed position so as to in sure of its proper engagement with the door. This head 11 also serves as a means to pre vent'the garment hangers upon the rod 6 sliding past the forward end of the said rod while the garments are beinginspected.

In order that the head 11 will not be likely to mar any portion of the case which comes in contact therewith, for example, when the device is applied to or employed in connection with a revolving hanger the head 11 is formed peripherally with a groove 13 in which is fitted a soft rubber ring 14L. I

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is l. Ina device of the class described, the combination with a case havinga movable door, and an extensible support mounted within the case, of a bracket mounted upon the support, a hanger rod slidably mounted in the bracket, and means carried by the hanger rod and cooperating with the door for retracting the said hanger rod when the door is moved to open position, said means comprising a suction cup carried by the rod Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.

2. In a device of the class described, the

combination with a case having a door, and a hanger rod mounted within the case and relatively fixed, of a hanger rod slidably mounted upon the first mentioned rod, and

means carried by the last mentioned hanger rod and arranged to cooperate wlth the door to slide the said last mentioned rod forwardly, when the door is moved to open po- "and arranged to cooperate with the face of the door.v

limit the inward sliding movement of the rod, and suction means at the forward end' of the auxiliary rod arranged to cooperate with the inner face of the door whereby the auxiliary rod will be slid forwardly when the door is moved to open position.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a relatively fixed support, of a bracket mounted thereon, a hanger rod slidably mounted in the bracket, the said rod at one end being threaded, a head adjustably threaded upon the said end of the 1 rod and constituting an abutment for cooperating with the said bracket to limit the inward slidingmovement of the rod, and a suctioncup arranged at the forward-end of the said rod. 1
