similarly converging cutting edges of a pair of plates 20, which are shown as secured by bolts 22 in suitable recesses 24 in the side walls 10 at each side of the recess .4. The
upper faces of the plates 20 thus lie flush with the upper surfaces of the side walls 10,
thereby forming a suitable support for the legs of the staple 26 which is to be operated upon.
In this working position, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Figs. I and III,the staple is retained by means of a. pair of plates 28, sup )orted upon the top faces of the side walls 10 and secured thereto by bolts 30 near one end of each plate and by bolts 32 near the other end thereof, the latter bolts serving also to secure a tie-plate 34- which securely braces the parts and also limits the lowering movement of the lever 6, which is provided with a notch 36 to afford the proper amount of clearance for said tieplate. The inner edges of the retaining plates 28 are provided with notches 38 adjacent the cutting edges of the plates 20, for accommodating the staple legs and positioning them for the shearing action of the eutting elements 16 and 20. For this purpose the forward sides of said notches 38 act as gages or stops for the ends of the staple legs, and the other sides of said notches serve as abutments for the sides of the staple legs and are so outlined as to position said legs with their axes running slightly obliquely with reference to the cutting edges of the plates 20. Furthermore, these abutting sides of the notches 3S diverge in a forward direction sulliciently to permit spreading of the sheared portions of the staple a distance apart slightly greater than the distance between the remaining portions of the staple legs (see Fi IV).
An addiitlonal retaining means for the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful lVire-Cutting Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to devise a means for providing points on wire, and, in particular, upon staples, and in carrying out this object as regards the pointing of staples, the means devised is adapted to impart a slight spreading action to the ends of the staple simultaneously with the pointing thereof.
The means illustrated in the present embodiment thereof consists in. a shearing mechanism having provision for spreading the staple legs simultaneously with the l shearing action, together with means for properly positioning the staple in relation to the cutting elements. With this general object in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing one form of the same as embodied in practice, after whichthose particular features and combinations which are deemed to be novel will be severally specitied in the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure I is a plan view ofthe device; Fig. II is a longitudinal sec tion on the line II--II of Fig. 1; Fig. III is a transverse section on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1; and Fig. IV represents plan views of a staple before and after the pointing operation, respectively.
Referring to said drawing, a bed plate 2 is shown having a recess 4 in its upper face, within which is mounted a lever 6a This lever is pivoted at its lower end upon the bolts 8, which are adjustably mounted in the side walls 10 of the recess 4:. The inner ends of the bolts 8 are reduced (see Fig. III) for fitting in suitable recesses of the lever atits pivotal point, the shoulders of said reduced portions abutting .against the adjacent side faces of the lever. This enables the lever to be adjusted in order to center the same pro erly in said recess 4 for a pur ose hereina ter referred recess 14 for accommodating a wirecutting.

By means of the above-described construction and arrangement, it will be apparent that a staple (or single strands of wire, if preferred) positioned in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, will, upon swinging of the lever to effect cooperative shearing action of the members 16 and 20, be pointed as illustrated in Fig. IV; and furthermore, that the pointed portions will be spread slightly farther apart for a purpose found useful in certain arts. Difierent lengths of staples may be so treated according to the adjustment of the slide member 42, and the cutting member 16 may be maintained always in correct central relation with reference to the plates 20, by proper adjustment of the pivot bolts 8.
WVhile the foregoing represents what is now conceived to be the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, the right is reserved to all such formal departures therefrom as may be fairly embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
Claims:
1. In a device for cutting and bending wire, the combination of a wire-shearing means, and means for holding and positioning the wire including a positioning member having an edge for positioning the wire at the rear of the portion to be sheared and an edge at an angle to said first edge and adapted to permit slight lateral deflection of the sheared portion of the wire.
2. In a device for cutting and bending wire, the combination of a wire-shearing means, and means for holding and positioning the wire including a positioning member provided with a notch in the path of the shearing means, one side of said notch forming a stop for the end of the wire, and the other side of said notch extending at an angle permitting slight lateral deflection of the sheared portion of the wire.
3. A device for pointing staples, comprising a stationary cutting means having a pair of non-parallel cutting edges, means for positioning a staple with its legs overlying said cutting edges, and a movable cutting member having a pair of cutting edges adapted to cooperate respectively with said non-parallel edges to shear the ends of said staple legs.
4. In a wire-cutting device, the combination of a pivoted cutting member having a pair of cutting edges converging in the direction of the axis of said member, and a stationary cuttingmeans having a pair of nonparallel cutting edges located in the path of said movable cutting edges andadapted to cooperate therewith.
5. In a device for pointing staples, the combination of a pivoted cutting member having a pair of cutting edges converging in the direction of the axis of said member, a stationarycutting means having a pair of non-parallel cutting edges located in the path of said converging edgesand adapted to cotiperate therewith, and means for holding a staple with its legs overlying said stationary cutting edges and the axes of said legs extending at oblique angles to said stationary cutting edges.
6. In a device for cutting wire, the combination of wire-shearing means and a wireholding means, means being constructed and arranged to laterally deflect the sheared end of the wir simultaneously with the shearing thereof.
7. A device for pointing staples, comprising in. combination a staple-holding means, and means for simultaneously shearing points on the ends of both of the staple legs, said holding and shearing means being constructed and arranged to slightly spread the ointed ends of the staple legs simultaneously with the action of said shearing means.
8. A device for pointing staples, comprising a stationary cutting means having a pair of non-parallel cutting edges, a movable cu=tting member having cutting edges adapted to cooperate with said non parallel cutting edges, staple-positioning means for locating the legs of the staple over said non-parallel edges in the path of movement of the movable cutting edges, said positioning means including retaining members. mounted alongside said stationary cutting edges andhaving portions thereof spaced a distance apart slightly greater than the width of the staple to permit spreading of the sheared ends of the staple.
9. A device for pointing staples, comprising a stationary cutting means having a pair of non-parallel cutting edges, a pivoted lever, a cutting member carried by'said lever and adapted, upon movement of the lever, to be brought between said edges and into cooperation therewith to shear the staple legs, means for positioning a staple with its legs overlying said stationary cutting edges, opposite sides of said lever at its pivotal point and permitting adjustment of the lever to center said movable cutting member with relation to the stationary cutting means.
10. A. device for pointing staples, comprising a statlonary cutting means having cutsaid shearing and holding,
stationary cutting a and a pair of bolts engaging ting edges extending in diverging relation, a and holding the latter against the action of 10 movable cutting member having cutting edges adapted to coiiperate with said dlverging cutting edges, staple-positioning means for locating the legs of the staple over said diverging cutting edges in the ath of movement of the movable cutting e ges, said 0- sitioning means including an adjusta 10 member for engaging the head of the staple the cutting means.
