subjectaof'the Czar of Russia, and a re'sident of New York, county and State of- New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement'in Molds,-of which the. following is a full, clear, andexact specification.
This invention relates'more articularly to a class of devices adapted to e used for; making doll heads.
My inventionhas-for its object primaril to provide a mold designed to be employed for making articles of plastic material especially doll heads which are formed witha hollow interior whereby the article may; be light in weight as well 'assavin a great; consumption of material, and w erein' is provided a shell, or die composedof two mating!J members, the opposed 'surfacesof which eingcut-out to provide the'die with a hollow interior to conform to the con-f figuration of the article to be molded. v
Another object of the invention is to pro- 2 vide a collapsible core which consists of a supporting post and a plurality of segments which serve to form the hollow-interiorof the article; and" still another object of the invention is to provide on. one of the corresponding ends of each segment an integral gripping element, or book which is seated in recesses in one end ofthe core-rod for detachably holding the segments thereo. v
A further object of-the invention is to provide a cap which is removablydisposed over the opposite end of the core rod and over the opposite ends of the segments when assembled; and still a further object of the invention is to providea mold of simple and durable construction, and which is susceptible of being made in various sizes and shapes; t. A practicalembodiment ofthe invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming apart of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description. The mold has a shell, or die 10.which may I be of any suitable-shape'and size, and said die is composed of two mating members, or sections 11 and 12. The opposed surfaces of the mating1 members 11 and 12 are cut-out to provide a ollow interior 13 to conform to the configuration of the article to be molded,-
for instance --a doll head as illustrated in the drawing. One end of each of the mating members 11 and 12 is also cut-out, to
provide through the endof the die an opening 14 which communicates with the hollow interior l3 whenthe mating members are assembled, and through said mating members are transverse passages 15 and 15 which communicate with the opening 14.
Serving to be employed in conjunction with the die 10 for molding an article of plastic material, and which may be formed with a hollow interior, I provide a collapsible core, as 16. v The collapsible core 16 has asupporting post 17 formed with a circular tapered body portion 18, and extending from one end of said body portion is an elongated square extension 19 which is also tapered toward its free end. Projecting from the central part of the free end of the extension 19 of the supporting post is a sunstantiallysquare short stem 20 which is considerably smaller in difnension than the extension of the post. In opposite parts of the free end of the extension 19, and around the stem 20 are two recesses 21 and 22 which are separated by partitions 23 and 24 extending from the stem to the marginal edge of the free end thereof, and upon the other end of the body portion 18 is formed a handle 25.
Arranged around the supporting post 17, and detachably held thereto, are a number of separate segments, as 26, 26, 27, 27, 28, 28*,- 29, 29, 30, 30*. The segments 26, 27 28, 29, 30, correspond in respective formations to the segments 26, 27 28, 29*, 30, and all of the segments are shaped so that when assembled on the post 17 they will approximately conform with the shape of the interior of the die 10, but the segments are made of sizes whereby the core is smaller than the interior of the die. An article having a wall of even thickness may thereb be roduced by the use of this form of mo d, an a great saving may also be made in the consumption of material. The segments 26 and 26 have enlarged body portions 31 with flat side faces, as 32 and 33. The segments 27 and 27 have enlarged'irregular triangular body portions 34 with one flat face 35 so as to abut against the faces 32 and 33 of the body portion of the segments 26, and each of the sald segments 27 and 27 have an irregular curved face, as 36. The segments 28 and 28 .have enlarged irregular triangular body portions 43 each having a straight face 4-4 which is in contact with the side faces 32 and 33 of the segment 26, and each of said segments 30 and 30 also have an irregular face, as 45, one of which is in contact with the irregular face 42 of each of the segments 29 and 29. When the segments are assembled in this manner around the supporting post 17 the collapsible core proper is then formed, and by making the exposed facesof the segments of suitable shapes the contour of the core will conform to the shape of the interior of the die.
For the purpose of detachably holding the segments 26, 26, 27, 27, 28, 28", 29, 29, 30. 30' to the supporting post 17, upon one of the corresponding ends of the body portion of each segment is provided a gripping element, or hook 46. All of the hooks 46 are disposed so as to be removably seated in the recesses 21 and 22 of the stem 20 of the extension. 19 of the supporting post, and extending from the other end of the body portion of each of said segments is a neck 47 provided with'a wedge-shaped part 48 upon its free end portion. The wedge-shaped parts 48 are formed so that when the segments are assembled upon the supporting post 17 a circular tapered head as shown at 49 in Fig. 1, will be provided so as to be disposed in the opening 14 of the die, and said head is of less diameter than the opening.
In order to retain the head 49 of the segments against movement when arranged upon the supporting post 17, I provide a removable collar, or cap, as 50. The cap 50 has an opening 51 centrally therethrough which communicates with the interior of t e cap, and projecting from diametrically opposite parts of the exterior periphery of the cap are two lugs 52 and '53. When the segments and the su porting post 17 are assembled the handfi; 25 is disposed through the opening 51 of the cap, and the cap 1s then guided to encircle the head 49 of the segments. After suflicient quantity of t e plastic material for making the article to be moldedis placed in one or both of the mating members of the die 10 the assembled core is properly sitioned between the members so that the ugs 52 and 53 will be inserted in the passages 15 and 15 of the mating members. As is-incident to the methods employed in the manufacture of this class of articles, the mold issubsequently placed under suitable pressure, and when the article ishnolded the mating members of the die are removed. The cap 50 is removed from the core, and the supporting post 17 is withdrawn from between the segments. .The segments will then collapse interiorly of the head, and may be readily removed from the article through an open part thereof.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifica'tions may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having. thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a mold of the character described, the combination with a die composed of two mating members, each having the opposed surface thereof cut-out to provide a hollow interior to conform in shape to the article to be molded, and each of said members having a corresponding end cut-out to form an opening through the die in communication with its interior when the mating members are assembled, of a supporting post having a handle on one of its ends, and having a recess in its opposite end, a plurality of segments detachably arranged around the supporting post, said segments being formed so as to collapse when the supporting post is withdrawn from between the segments, and said segments being made of shapes whereby the 'periphery of all the segments when assembled will be of less diameter than the interior of the die and will conform with the shape of the interior of said die, a plurality of gripping elements, one formed on one of the corresponding ends of each segment, said gripping elements being removably inserted in the recess of the supporting post, and a cap detachably disposed over the handle portion of the supporting post, said cap encircling the segments at the ends thereof which are opposite to the gripping elements, and means provided upon the cap for detachably holding .the cap to the mating members of the die when the parts of the mold are assembled. p 2.
