METAL-SASH-BAR JOINT.
Specification of Letters latent. Application filed December 26, 1918. Serial No. 808,685.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN J. CHEvIRoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metal-Sash-Bar Joints, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference bar provided with a slot passing partly being bad to the. accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to metal sash bar joints and comprises a joint locked by a tongue from the web of one bar passing through a hole in the other bar.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a perspective of the two sash bars in position to be interengaged. Fig. 2, is a section through the web of the bars showing them interengaged and the tongue in position to be forced into interlocked engagement. Fig. 3, is a similarview showing the tongue forced into interlocking position.
' There are a great many metal sash bar interlocks but many of these require the bending of one bar or the other so that it tends to weaken the bar. I avoid this by cutting out and striking up a tongue in the web of one of the bars which interlocks in a hole in the other bar. T bars are preferably employed, one being provided with a slot (1 completely through the web and the other having its flanges completely cut away as at b to allow the flange of the other bar to pass through it. A tongue 0 is cut out of the bar having the slot a in its web before this slot (1 is cut. This tongue 0 is partially folded up or upset so as to be at one side of the slot at when this slot is cut or made. The tongue bends at its mid-portion so as to buckle. The slot (1 is located slightly to one side from the position in the web that the end of the tongue 0 occupies before it is folded up. This leaves a notch 03 on the other side of the slot at. A
hence when the right-hand bar is fitted into the slot a of the left-hand bar the hole e will come adjacent to the-end of the tongue 0. By striking the tongue 0 a blow it can be forced not only through the hole e but into the recess d, thereby securelylocking the two bars together. Of course, the notch 03 could be eliminated but it is preferable to use it.
What I claim is 1. A joint, having in combination, a metal cross-wise of the bar, a portion of the metal that would ordinarily be removed for such slot being preserved as the end of a tongue, the said tongue comprising such portion and the metal included between two outs running angularly away from said cross slot, and a second metal bar adapted to fit into the said cross slot and provided with a hole adapted to register with the end of the tongue, the said tongue being driven into the hole of the second metal bar and through the same.
2. A joint, having in combination, a metal bar provided with I a slot passing partly cross-wise of the bar, a portion of the metal opposite side, a second metal-bar adapted to fit into the said cross slot and provided with a hole adapted to register with the end of the tongue, the said tongue being driven completely through the hole of the second metal bar and into the recess formed on the opposite side.
In testimony whereof, I- slgn thls speclfication in the presence of two wltnesses.
JULIAN J CHEVIRON.
