GGMBINED VALVE-CAP AND DUST-GUARD FOR PNEUMATIC-TIRE VALVES.
nicest.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Application filed March it, 1913. Seriai No. 754,94fi.
edcertain new and useful Improvements in .(loinbinecl Valve-Caps and Dust-Guards for Pneumatic-Tire Valves, of which thcfol lowing is a specification.
bincdwalve cap and dust cap for the valve casings of pneumatic tires. and has for its object to rovide a device of this character which em oches novel features of construction whereby the two caps are combined in one structure .so as to be simultaneously 'p lilced in position or removed therefrom,
vthereby eliminating the annoyance and "em 1 uatiousloss of tune usually incident to han-I dlin g the two caps separately and independently of each other.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined valve cap and dust cap which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be uickly placed in position or removed thererom, and which provides an effective means for closing the end of the valve casing and also for'housi'ng'the projecting portion of the valve casing so asto exclude dirt therefrom.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description produst and coeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For =a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in whichz-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of my combined valve cap and dust cap. portions being broken away and shown in section to more clearly illustrate the construction. 2 is a side elevation of a modified form. of'the'invention, parts being broken away and shown in section to' more clearly illustrate the details of construction.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the 'iollowing description, and indicat-ed in all the views of the drawings by the same reference charactrrs. v
One embodiment of my invention is --illustrated by 1 in which the numeral 7 designates the dust cap. This dust cap has a threaded engagement with the reduced extremity l" of the valve casing 1 and is adapted to be applied to or removed there from in the usual manner.- *The mouth of the valve cap 7 is flared and enlarged as indicated at 8 to provide a substantially cylindrical recess which surrounds the tubular valve casing 1 and is adapted to receive 1 the upper end of the sleeve ortdust exclud- Thepresent invention relates to a coming casing 9. This sleeve 9 loosely receives the valve casing l and the exterior thereof is provided with left hand, threads 9 which engage corresponding threads formed upon f justing or manipulating the sleeve. The
valvecap 7 and dust excluding casing 9 are thus combined in one member which 1s handled as a unit, both the cap and dust guard being removed from the valve casing or applied thereto at the same time. The valve cap 7 is first applied to the reduced end 1" of the valve casing 1 and the sleeve 9 then rotated in a reverse direction until the mouth thereof is brought into a firm engagement with the rim nut 3. Owing to the provision of the left hand thread 9, a.n
loosening of the rim nut 3 is prevente since the unscrewing of the rim nut would tend to rotate the sleeve 9 in such a .direction as to bring the sleeve into a more forcible engagement with the rim nut, it being remembered that the cap 7 is connected to the valve casing 1- by means of right hand threads, while the sleeve 9 is connected to the cap 7 by means of left hand threads.
A modification is shown by Fig. 2, in
upper extremity ot-the sleeve-1&1 is provided with. on exterior rim 14'? which with an inwardly extending flange 13 upon 'moved downwardl the flared end 13 of the valve cap-13 for preventing the telescoping members from pulling completely apart. The lower end of the dust excluding sleeve 1d is threaded. at 15 and is adapted to be received within the recess 3 of the rim not 3 and to have a threaded engagement with the Walls thereof. The valve cap 13 is first applied to the extremity of the valve casin l, and the telescoping dust excluding s cave is is then against the rim nut 3 and rotated to bring the threaded end 15 thereof into engagement with the threaded walls of the recess 3".
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined valve ca and dust guard for tire valve casings,- t e combine" tion of a threaded cap adapted to-bescrewed upon the outer end of the tire valve casing, and a dust excluding sleeve carried by the cap so as to be removable therewith, the end of the dust excluding sleeve being adjustable ugon the cap to admit of the said sleeve being rought into engagement with the rim nut after the cap has been screwed -.'-into position.
2. In a ,combinedvalve ca dust guard for tire valve casings, t e combination of a threaded-cap adapted to be'screwed upon the tire valve casing, said ea being formed with a flared niouth,'and a ust excluding sleeve carried by the cap soils to he removable therewith, the end of the sleeve.
meut and a net excluding sleeve having one end thereof threaded within the em mouth of the valve cap while the onposite end thereof is adapted to engage the rim nut. 5. The combination of a cap for tire valve movable in and out therein to admit.
tov
casings, said cap havin a flared mouth and being provided with le hand threads,- and a dust excludin sleeve carried by the valve cap and pruvi ed with left hand threads adapted to engage the left hand threads of the valve cap, the said dust excluding sleeve being adaptedto be brought into engagement with the rim nut.
In testimony whereofl' afiix my signature a; presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM P. HAMMOND.
