Description

I@altrui @imita GEORGE BATES, or PHILADELPHIA, rENNsYLVANrA.
Letters Patent No. 111,423,11ma January a1', 181i.
IMPROVEMENT INl APER-CUTTING MACHINES.
'.12110Schedulerafon'edtointheImttlrllabontlmlnangpaxtofthelame.4
I, GEORGE BATES, of Philadelphia, county ofPhu-g adelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have' invented an lmpnovedCutting and Scoring-Machinefor Paper- Boxes, of which the following -is a specification.. Y
Nature and Object of 'theIiwentom My invention relates to machinesforcntting and scoringl pasteboards or straw-boards preparatory to converting the same intopaper-boxes; and
My invention consists of devices too fully -described hereafter to need preliminary explanation, whereby the cutting and scoring may be readily effected, and Vwhereby the cutting and scoring-disks may be readily and properly adjusted.
Description of the Accompanying Brewing.
Figure 1, sheet No. 1, is a sectional perspective view of my improved cutting and scoring-machine for paper-boxes;
Figure 2, a plan view of the same;
Figures 3, 4, and 5, diagrams illustrating the operation of the machine;
Figure ii, sheet No. 2, a transverse sectional elevation; and
Figure 7 a view ofthe rear end of the machine.
General Description.
A and Aare the opposite side-frames of the `machine, and are connected together by suitable crossbars, a a.
. frames.
Dand D' are two shafts, turning in suitable bearings in the opposite side frames of the machine, the
bearings of the lower'shaft being xed and those of the upper shaft being acted on by set-screws in the caps e of the frames.
These shafts areprovidedwith cutting-disks, the
tshaft D with disks' f, and the shaft D with disks f.
Each disk may be provided :with a feathervadapted to a groove in the shaft, and may be secured by a set screw after adjustment, the said screw passing through the hub of the disk and bearing with its end -against the shaft.
The driving-roller B, shafts O, D, and D'as well as 'the feed-rollers-E and E', are so connected by suitable gearing or straps that on turning'the saiddrivi'ng- 'roller in 'the direction of its arrows, g's. land 6, the
other shafts and feed-rollers will revolve -i'n the direc tion of their arrows. i
. A bar, G, is-'so hung,by arms It h, to the opposite side frames of thev machine thatits lower -edge can be 1 brought in'to contact with the edges of the cuttingdisks f ofthe shaft D', or with the edgesof the seoringdisks bY outhe shaft E, or the rod maybe so adjusted l :is to be clear of both thecutting and scoring-disks.
The bar G is" marked ou both sides with inches and -fractions of an inch, so that it'will serve as a guide in adjusting botlrthe cutting and scoring-disks.
lhedislrs having been properly adiusted and V.the rollersl and shafts being'caused torevolve in thel direction of their arrows, a board of the proper site is first placed on a platform, H, in front of the machine, and presented to the feed-rollers, which-"carry the board forward so that it will pass betweeufthe scoringf disks. b and the roller B, and thence between the ent-v ting-disks of the shafts-D andV D', the scored andy severed .boards being nally deposited on the inclined platform I at therear of the machine. l
If the cutting and --scoring-dislr.s be adjusted to the relative positions shown in tig.2,the dots y y' y y will represent the, scoring-lines,.and the dots x. :c :c z the lines on which the board is severed. v
If thetwo scored strips into which'the board has now been converted be removed from the 'rear to the front table, and be placed at right angles tothe position. the board first occupied onl the platform, and these strips be subjected to the action of themachine, the result will be the conversion of the bdards-into .four square pieces,.g. 3, each piece being scorednear all of itsv four edges, so as'to be' readily converted into a paper-box in a manner which will beclearly understood by reference to'gs. and 5.
` 01am. The combination-of the cutting-and scoring-disks anda graduated bar,-G, so suspended that it can be vbrought opposite either of the scorersor cutters, as
set forth.
' In testimony whereof I have signed xmy naine to I this-speeiicationin the presenceoi' two subscribing witnesses.
, GEORGE BATES. Witnesses:
JNO. B. Hamme, Louis BoswnLL.
