To all whom it may concern Be it known. that I, WILLIAM A. DoBLn, a citizen of the United States, residing'in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Wear-Rings, of which I the following is a The resent invention relates to improvements mhydraulic 'motor, pump, or turbine construction, and more particularly to an adjustable wear ring interposed between the runner andthe casing, and the invention has for its principal objects to provide an adjustable wear ring of the type mentioned,
which, when worn may be adjusted to maintain a substantially fluid tight joint between the runner and the interior of the casing; to provide a wear ring the proper adjustment of which will properly position the runner relative to theinlet, to maintain equal pressures on both sides of the runner;
- and to provide an adjustable wear ring, the
parts of which, when worn, may be readily removed from either the casing or the 11nner and replaced, without requiring the renewal of the runner or a section of the easing, which is necessary in devices. of this type asat present constructed.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction andcombination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims hereto appended may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invent-ion, reference is directed to the accompanying drawing disclosing one form of my invention and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hydraulic motor casing disclosing the adjusting and retaining means for the wear ring secured to the inner face of the'casing. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of Fig. 1, disclosing the wear ring mounted on the intenor of the casing and the ring carriedby the runner. Fig.3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 3---3Fi ,g. 1, disclosing the configuration and. mounting of the wear rings and the adjusting means for the rlng carried by the casing, Fig. 4: is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 44,-Fig. 1 disclosing the configuration and mounting of the wear rlngs and the means for retaining the ring carried by the casing in position. Referring more particularly to the drawmgs, the reference numeral 1 designates the casing of'a hydraulic motor provided with the water inlet 2 and outlet 3, and rotatably I mounted in said casing is a shaft 4 provided with a hub 5, to which is secured a supporting member or disk 6, to the outer peripheral edge of which is attached one side of the runner 7 of any well known type, which I is positioned intermediate the inlet 2 and stantially rectangular shaped annular me 'tallic wear ring 12, which is retained in position by the holding screws 13 which proj ect outwardly from the rear surface thereof and extend through openings 14 in the easing 1, and are provided on their ends with nuts 15. The wear ring 12 is adjusted in its seat 11 to compensate for the wear caused by frictional contact, by the headed adjusting screw bolts 16, which are threaded through the casing 1 and are provided with lock nuts 17 tolret-ain the same in their ad j listed-position.
Carried on the-inner periphery of the annular flange 10 is a substantially T-shaped 100 metallic wear rin 18, the supporting portion 19 of which is secured to the flange 10 by the screws 20, and-,the 'flange 2110;! the head-portion 22 which lies in a lane transverse to the axis of rotation of t e runner 7 covers .the outer faceof the flange 10.with the vertically disposedouter or wear surface 23 of the head portion in slight frictional contact with the'vertical parallel wear surface 24 of the adjustablewear ring 12. Having thus described my mvention'what is claimed as new and is desired to be protected by Letters Patent'is v a 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a casing provided with a fluid inlet and a fluid o tlet, of a runner rotatably mounted therein, an annular wear ring carried by the runner and having a wall thereof interposed between the side of the casing and side of the runner, an annufor the casin and in cooperative relatlon with said first mentioned wear ring, and means for adjusting the wear surfaces of the said wear rings relative to each other comprising a threaded bolt projecting through a threaded opening in a wall of the casing and loosely engaging the outer face of the casing wear ring, and a bolt adjustable'from without the casing loosely projecting through the wall of the casing and havin an adjustable threaded connection with t e wear ring.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a hollow casing having oppositely disposed walls, a rotatable shaft T projecting through the casing, a runner positioned on the shaft, an inwardly projecting annular flange on one wall-of the casing concentrically arranged relative to the said shaft,fan outwardly projecting annular flange on the runner of greater diameter than the flange of the casing, and adapted ,tooverlie sai flange, the casing having an inwardly projecting annular flange on its opposite'wall, and the. runner having an auxiliary outwardly projecting annular flange of a greater diameter than the last mentionedfflange of the casing, and overlying the same substantially throughout the width of the same, and an annular wear plate substantially L-shaped in cross sectlon, one flange of which being coextensive with and projecting between the auxiliary flanges .of the casin and runner, and the other flange of which extends arallel with the side wall of the casing an overlies the edge of the ad acent runner.flange, ;and ad-- justing means enga the'last mentioned flange of the ,L-shapidfiing.
