Specification of Letters Iatent.
Application filed November 12, 1918. Serial No. 800,655.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
To all whom it may concern: a I Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. EDWARDS,
.a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewistown, in the county of Fergus, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Bits; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drill. bits and particularly to that type employed in drilling water, oil and gas wells and in analogous-operation.
- cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in'the details of construction and in=.the arrangement and com-' bination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section-of a well drilling casing showing the improved bit therein, said bit being. in the position it. would occupy before completin its drilling stroke; Fig. 2, a view simi ar, to..Fig. 1. showing the bit at the termination of its drilling stroke; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the bit detached; Fig. 4, a section on theline 44 of Fig. 3;, Fi 5, a section on the. line 5-'-5 of Fig. 3, an Fig. 6, an end view of the bit looking at the cutting edge thereof.
Referring to the drawings the bit is shown as comprising a body A including a Lcylin-. drical knuckle portion 10, one endof whi h? is reduced and threaded as at 11 whereby body forms a part.
knuckle 10 is substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section and is provided with opposite flat faces 12 whereby same may be gripped with a tool for the purpose of screwing the bit into a well drilling tool. The extreme outer end of the body A is flared outwardly as at 13 and provided with a cutting edge 14. It will be noted that the diameter of the cylinder of which the semi-cylindrical portion of the body forms a part is equal to or less than the interior diameter of the casing which is indicated at 15 whereby the bit is capable of a certain amount of lateral movement within the casing. It will be further noted in this connection that the cutting edge 14: is located in a circle havin a greater diameter than the diameter 0 the cylinder of which the semi-cylindrical portion of the The flat face of the semicylindrical portion of the body is rovided with longitudinal grooves 16 an 17 forming a central rib 18 the outer end of which terminates in a cutting edge 19. Secured against one of the flat faces-12 and engaged in a socket 20 formed in one end of the knuckle 10 is one end of a bow spring 21. The outer end of this bow spring 21 is provided with a longitudinal'slot 22 and engages the outer edge of the rib 18. "Extending through the slot 22 and engaged in the rib 18 is a screw 23 which permits sliding movement of the adjacent end of the spring 21 as willbe obvious. The side portrons of the spring 21 adjacent the slot 22 are bent into embracing relation to the rib 18 whereby lateral movement of the spring with respect to the rib is prevented as is tools. The body A outwardly of the likewise'strain upon the screw 23 that would of its cutting stroke the cutting edge'f19 vjand flared'portion 13 will ass outof the casingv and the .spring 21 ,wi I automatically operate to throw the 'cuttin edge laterally and thus produce; a iboring aving a diameter in excess-oftlie exterior diameter of the casin 'wherebyif-ithe latter .can2be ad- "'s'g'anced without trouble as prothe casing whereby the cutting edge will be shifted to a position outwardly of the exterior limits of the casing when sa1d cutting edge has been moved out of the casing.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signw ture in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR L. EDWARDS.
