Description

iii-nit :ad slam We aim.
JOHN W.. OSBORNE, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK;
Letters Patent No. 111,376, dated January 31, 1871'.
at we IMPROVEME NT IN PRESERVlNG-COMPOUNDS FOR THE HANDS, &c.
I, JOHN W. OSBORNE, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain Preserviug=Oompound for the Hands of Ghemists, Dyers, Photographers,-and all others who are exposed to the action of either acids or alkalies used ordinarily in their several departments.
Nature and OQiect.
My invention consists in so forming or combining the well-known substance, parafline, with-other substances that it may be readily spread or distributed over the surface of the skin in such a manner as to enter the pores andall irregularities and form a complete coating thereon.
This I accomplish by combining some solvent with the parafliue, as, for example, the astral oil, well known as one of the distillations of pretroleum; also,
"cosmoline, a lubricating oil, or any other solvent of the par'aifine that will not evaporate too quickly, and in quantity about seven parts of the paratfinc to five parts of the solvent, making a paste about the-consisteney of cold cream, or of any degree that will spread easily on the skin.
The Schedule referred to in the Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Any of the perfumes may be, added to suit the fancy of the users; but the prime object is to coat the skin with a film ot'parafliue, which, being so very inert in its afiinities, or difiicult todecompose, will resist the action of chemicals, as the nitrate of silver, chlorine, the various dye-stufl's in solution, and will also be found to be an excellent emollient for the hands after the use of much soap.
It is manifestly evident that these proportions may 'be varied greatly and accomplish the desired results,
though it will be found that a sutfieient quantity of the solvent must be added to make the distribution complete.
Claim. The improved composition herein described, produced by combining with parafiine any oil or softening ent, as described.
J. W. OSBORNE.
