UNITED STATES SAMUEL K. ncxnnn, or SARlTA, TEXAS.
I GATE.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 29, 1913. Serial No. 803,702.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL K. ECKERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sarita, in the county of lVillacy and State of Texas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gates, and is adapted especially for use in connection with the fences of farms, yards, or other inclosed spaces where such devices are applicable.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a gate that will be comparatively cheap in production, durable, and efliclent in operation, and that may be operated, manually, from a vehicle, eliminating the necessity of the driver of a vehicle leaving his seat to open the gate, and rendering the opening of the gate easy of accomplishment from the vehicle.
The invention consists essentially in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts associated with a rolling gate by means of which the same may be opened and closed, and held in position, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate and its connections constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1, parts being shown in section for convenience of illustration. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the track. Fig. 4 is a detail view of an actuating lever.
In the preferred embodiment of my gate apparatus I employ a rolling member or wheel as l which is provided with a metallic rim or tire 2 and with braces or rods 3 connecting and holding the parts of the wheel in proper relationship, and forming a lattice work or body portion for closing the open wheel. The wheel is adapted to travel from right to left to open the gate and from left to right to close the gate in Fig. 1, and for this purpose I utilize a frame which includes a sill or beam 1, preferably laid in the ground across the roadway with its upper surface about flush with the level of the road. The
sill is provided with a track way for the Patented oee.13,1914.
wheel, and the track at each end terminates in a-depression or recess as 6 or 7 in which the wheel stands when at rest. the recess 6 the gate way is open and while the wheel is in depression 7 it is iniclosed position. The wheel is adapted to travel or roll back and forth between these two recesses, in the track or groove 5, and at the top it .is guided between side bars 8 extendmg between the uprights or posts 9, 9, 9. W1thinthe posts or frame the gateway 10 1s formed at the right of Fig. 1, and a clear space is provided therethrough for the passage of a vehicle when the gate is in position shown in this figure. Brace bars 11, 11 are provided for the posts in the gateway and diagonal braces 12 are erected at the left portion of the frame work. i
The actuating mechanism for the gate is duplicated at the inner and outer side there of, and it is intended that the gate shall be opened by actuating a lever at the right of the road way, and after passing through the gateway, the rider is to close the gate by actuating the lever at the same side of the roadway. This practice is adapted when going into the inclosure, but when coming While in out the driver first actuates a lever at the i left to open the gate, and then when outside he actuates the lever on the same side to close the gate. Inasmuch as the actuating parts are the same in both instances, it is deemed necessary to describe only one device. There are two actuating levers as 13, 14:, which are pivoted in brackets 15 attached to posts 9. These levers are adapted to swing in between the posts 9 of the frame, and at the left in Fig; 1 it will be seen that the lever extends under a portion of the wheel, and is in contact therewith. The levers are adapt ed, by frictional contact, and when properly moved, to impel the wheel in itstrack, and
this impelling movement is accomplished by swinging one of the levers on its pivot 16. To the short arm of ,or cords 18 and 18 are attached, and after passing under pulley 19, and over pulley 20, the cords are attached each to a lever arm 21 which is pivoted at 22 in a bracket 23 attached to a post 24. By means of a hand pull 25 the lever arm 21 may be drawn downwardly. The levers 17, 17 are conthe lever. 17 the ropes roll to the right and find rest in the recess 7 where it closes the gateway. To open the gate after it is closed, the lever 14 is operated in manner similar to the described operationbf the lever 13, and the wheel is rolled to the left. The levers also act as bumpers to stop the rolling of the wheel should it by any possibility move beyond one of the recesses 6 or 7.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a frame having a track formed with spaced recesses, of a wheel movable in the track and adapted to stand in said recesses, and a pair of actuating levers adapted for contact with said Wheel for impelling it from one recess to the other.
2. The combination with a frame having a track and a wheel movable therein, of a lever pivoted in the frame and adapted for contact with said wheel, and means for moving said lever whereby the wheel is impelled.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL K. ECKERD.
