To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, OTTO PETERMANN, a citizen of theRepublic of Switzerland, and a resident of Groton, county of Tompkins, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type VYriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 'This invention relates more particularly to baclespacing mechanism for front strike or visible typewriting machines, and is a division of my pending application, Sr. No. 506,442, filed July 7, 1909. y
@ne object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means by which the carriage and platen may be moved backward a space at a time'and the said mechanism so supported that the carriage, platen and back-spacing mechanism may be folded' over the key-levers or type-bars orl otherwise moved into compact relation to another part of the machine, `in order that the machine may be readily transported.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means which may be supported and held to the carriage bed in such a way that it may operate in a direction opposite to the letter spacing movement of the carriage, and'whicli mechanism has an operative element within convenient reach of the operator by which the backspacing of the carriage may be readily accomplished.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which is simple in con struction and which is adapted for use in connection with various forms of typewriting machines.
liiith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more ,particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part'of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view, partly broken away, showing a part of the carriage bed with the back-spacing mechanism applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, showing how the carriage may be propelled in one direction, vand oneI form` of escapeifnent4 mechanism thatmay be used. in connection the carriage for moving the same'along the- 1 carriage bed.
The machine frame 10 has 'a support 11 which may be moved vertically thereon, and on said support is a bed 12 along which a carriage 13 is adapted to move. This carriage is provided with a platen 14 on each end of which is a knob 15 Ifor manually rotating the same, and'on the carriage may be arranged suitable line-spacing mechanism for the platen. The carriage may be forced along the bed in one direction by propelling mechanism of any desired construction. As shown, this propelling mechanism may come prise a spring-operated drum 16 about which is aI cord or other exible connection 17, one end of which cordris passed around a pulley 18 and secured to the carriage so that the tension of a spring within the drum 16 may operate to pull or force the carriage along the bed in one direction.
A rack 19 is heldto the carriage and this rack is engaged by a pinion 20 forming a part of an escapement mechanism. This pinion is adapted to move with a member 2,1l of a clutch which is adapted to engage a second clutch member 22, the `latter being held to move with a shaft 23. On the shaft 23 and'held thereto isa ratchet wheel 2i which is adaptedto be engaged by suitable escapement dogs adapted' to be operated by a lever or device 25, and this device 25 'has one part thereof in the path of a vertically movable rod or bar 26. The rod or bar 26 is adapted to be moved vertically as each keylever 27 is depressed and said bar may be al'so moved by the usual space bar and with the shift levers to adapt each type-bar to have a plurality of characters, and to per mit tliecarriage to move the distance of one space each time a key-lever is depressed as is usual in typewriting machines.
The machine may be also provided with suitable ribbon mechanism, and the support 11 may comprise two foldable parts pivotally held together, on one of which is mounted the bed 12 and carriage 13,`so that the carriage and 4bed together with the propelling mechanism and platen may be folded over into compact relation to the machine .tranigasshowni in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The parts thus far described may be of the usual or of any preferred construction.
- To back space the carriage and vto move the same against the actionof the propelling means, I provide a lever or bar-like. element 28, one end of which, as '29, is provided with a tooth o`r do which is adapted to engage the teethvv of t e rack '19. The lever 28 is slotted,l as 'at 30, and passing through said slot is a screw 31 which serves as a pivot for the lever 28 and permits lengthwise movement thereof. The lever' 28,-is located above the bed 12 and is normally forced in @ne direction by a spring 32, and at the other end of said lever is a head 33 which is adapted to be engaged by the upturned end 34 of a manually operated lever 3,5. This lever 35 is pivoted at 36 to one of the parts of the foldable support 11, andon the outer end of the lever isa thumb or-'ingerortion oi" keynt37 by which the lever may 4 moved on its pivot 36. The lever 35 has its inner end under the bed 12 and has its upturnetl end 34 extending-through a' slot 38 in the carriage bed, and said end 34 is adapted to engage an inclined portion 39 of the lever 2S. The lever 35 has its part or key 37 within convenient reach of the operator and when moved, th'e'end 34 will` engage the head 33 of ,the lever -28 and will cause'the same to niove outward, and. owing to the inclined or cam part 39, the end or tooth 18 will be caused to engage the rack 19 which `will move the rack and the carriage a distance of one space at .each movement of the lever 2 4.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular form of backspacing mechanism as this may `be changed so long as it is applied to a foldable or coinpact typewriter or is within the scope of the claims.
While I show and describe certain parts of a typewriting machine, those parts not .claimed herein are claimed in other and co- `pending applications filed by me.
From'the foregoing, it will be seen that a simple and eflicient back-spacing mechanism is provided for typewriting machines; that said mechanism may be shifted with the platen andthe carriage into compactrelation to another part of the typewriting may chine whether the said shifting movement is over the keyboard or some other part of the machine; that said mechanism is within convenient reach of the operator; and that said mechanism may be readily made-and appliedas a part of typewriting machines.`

4. In a typewriting machine, the combination ofa plurality of key-levers, a support, a carriage mounted upon said support and foldable forward vinto ycompact relation to the key-levers, a rack movable with the carriage, a dog carrier having a dog to move the rack, and means operative.-from the front of the machine and adapted to operate the dog carrier and movable with the carriage and dog carrier into its folded position.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support, arms piv-otally held to said support, a carriage mounted upon the arms and movable into compact relation to another part of the machine when not in use, a dog carrier` having a dog, means adapted to be engaged by said dog to move the carriage in a direction opposite its letterspacingy movement, and means pivotally held to one of said armsadapted to operate said dog carrier and foldable with Athe cai'- riage inits compact movement.
6. In a typewritiiig machine, the combination of a support, a carriage mounted upon the support'and foldable into compact mounted on said carriage support, means adapted .to be engaged by said dog and adaptedfto move the carriage in a directionv opposite' its letter-spacing movement, and means connected to operate said dog carrier aii'd foldable with the carriage in its coin-` piwt movement.
7. In a typewi'iting' machine, the combination of a platen carriage, a movable bed I for said carriage, a back-spacing dog carl misma .a spring for forcing the carrier in one direction, and means movable With the bed and having a loose connection with the. dog carrier adapted to operate said carrier.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a support, a carriage feeding rack, -a carriage bed pivotally mounted to swing on the support, a `dog carrier mounted for reciprocal movement on said carriage bed, a dog mounted upon the dog carrier,`
means for causing the dog to engage said carriagefeed rack when said dog carrier is moved in a direction opposite to that which the carriage rack travels under the iniiuence of the carriage moving power, and 7 means for operating said dog carrier, said dog carrier being capable of movement independent of said operating means.
.9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage feeding rack, a movable carriage bed, a back-spaoing dog carrier having a dog and mounted on said bed, a'
finger key, and means operatively connecting said linger key with said dog carrier, the construction and arrangement of parts being such that said dog carrier may move with the carriage bed independent of said nger key.
10. In a typewriting machine of the foldable type wherein the carriage bc'd is adapted to be moved to abnormal position, the combination of a support, a carriage bed, a back spacing dog mounted on said carriage bed, Ya finger key mounted for movement on said support, and operative means connecting said .finger key with said back spacing dog.
11. In a typewriting machine of the foldable type wherein the carriage bed is adapt ed to be moved to an abnormal position, the combination of a back spacing dog, a dog carrier, means for causing said back spacing dog to become operative when said dog cary rier is moved, pivotal means about which said carriage is moved to' abnormal position, a finger key, and means for operatively connecting said finger key with said dog carrier at all times.' i
12. In a typewriting machine'of the foldable type wherein the carriage bed is adapted to be moved from normal to abnormal position, the combination of a support, a carriage bed, means for permitting said carriage bed to be moved to abnormal position, a dog carrier mounted on the lcarriage bed and having a back spacing dog, a inger key, and means operatively connectingsaid4 tlnger key with said dogcarrier.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, of a carriage, a rack, 4a lever pivotally held under the car'- riage and having a tooth adapted to engage the rack, a spring normally forcing the lever in one direction, means for pivotally hold: ing the lever and permitting it to have a lengthwise movement, said lever having a head with an inclined or cam-like portion, a manually opera-ted flever pivotally held to the support and having an end adapted' to engage the head of the first-mentioned lever, and means whereby the operating lever may be moved on its pivot.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a support, vof a carriage, a-
member, a 'lever pivotally held under the carriage and having a tooth adapted toengage the member, a spring normally orcing the lever in one direction, means for pivotally holding the lever and permittingl it to have a lengthwise movement lengthwise of the carriage andunder the same, and a manually 4operated lever `pivotally held to the support atsubstantiallyright angles to the first-mentioned lever and having an end adapted to engage the head of said rstmentioned lever and having a finger portion located within convenient reach of the operator.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage having a base plate, a carriage bed located under the base plate and along which the carriage is adapted to travel, a rack mounted on vthe carriage, a longitudinally movable element located between the carriage bed and said base plate and having means to engage the rack and move the carriage for back spacing, means for operating saidelement, and means to adapt the carriage, bed and element to-,be moved into substantially overha ofing relation to a keyboard tomake the mac line more compact than when in use.

In a btypewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a carriage bed along which the carriage is adapted to travel, a longitudinally movable bar-like element pivotally held to move lengthwi'se'of the carriage bed and having means to4 engage a part movable with the carriage to move the latter for back spacing, and a lever having a loose connection with the bar-like element and adapted to operate said element.
18. In a typewriting machine,y the combination of a carriage, a carriage hed along which the carriage is adapted 'to travel, a
rack movable with the carriage, a longitudin'ally movable bar-like element pivotally held to in ove lengthwise of the carriage bed and having a tooth movable therewith to engage the rack and move the carriage for back spacing, and apivotally held lever having a loose connection with the bar-like element and adapted to operate said element.
19.
