Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1911, Serial No. 629,801.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, FRED G. MOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Antrim, county of Hillsboro, State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Apple Parers and Oorers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to apple parers and cor ers, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device Which is provided with a manually-manipulated coring spoon so that it may be used or not as desired, andto provide a novel construction of ter to enter the apple to. cut the core therefrom without danger of breaking or split-v ting the apple, machines of this fully hereinafter out in the appended claims.

A spring 37 serves to return the lever 30 to its initial position after the cam 36 has passed.
38 designates a coring spoon holder which is provided' with a foot portion 39 that is slidably mounted on the-guide rods 8, said foot portion extending underneath the sheet metal member 4, as clearly seen in Fig. 6. A coring spoon 40 is sustained by the holder 38, said coring spoon being clamped to the holder in any suitable way, as by means of a clamp block 41. The holder 38 is freely movable on the guide rods 8 and is intended to bemanually moved to perform the coring operation. To permit this to be done said holder is provided with the extension 42 which can be readily gripped between the thumb and finger of the operators left hand and by which the holder can be .readily moved toward and from the coring fork in performing the coring operation. I
I have provided a novel construction of coring spoon which will core the apple with out any danger of cracking or breaking it. Goring spoons are quite commonly made semi-cylindrical in shape throughout their entire length, but suchacoring spoon is very likely to split the applebecause vof the engagement of the. edges of the shank thereof with the apple as the coring spoon is advanced through the apple, this being especially true if the apple is not held perfectly true by the fork. In my improved coring spoon I make the cutting edge 43 thereof substantially semi-cylindrical, but I form said coring spoon with a neck portion 440 of considerably reduced width so that when the, coring spoon enters the apple the narrow neck portion 440 will not engage the sides I of the core hole formed in the apple with sufficient friction to .cause the apple to crack or split. 'The reduced neck portion 440-is formed by cutting out one or both of the edges of the coring spoon as at 45, and I preferably do this in such a way as to form one ormore barbs or points 44 immediately back of thelcutting edge. These barbs have the function of assisting to withdraw the apple from the fork 10 when the coring spoon is'retracted, for it will be readily seen that when the'coring spoon begins its retracting movement after it has entered the apple, these barbs 44 will engage the walls of the core hole and will by their engagement therewith assist in withdrawing the apple from the, fork.
46 is. a trimming knife which is provided with a shank 47 that is adjustably secured to the frame 1 by means of clamping screws 48, said trimming knife being for the purpose of trimming around the stem of the apple.
In the operation of the device the apple is placed on the fork and the paring mechanism is operated in usual manner, and as soon as the cycle of operations has proceeded to the point where the paring is completed and the knife is thrown back out of engagement with the apple, the operator will advance the coring spoon holder 38 thereby to core the apple and will then retract said coring spoon holder thereby to withdraw the cored apple from the fork. At this time the core doffer 23 will be operated to doif the core and the machine is in condition to receive another apple.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an apple parer, the combination with a frame, of paring mechanism thereon, a reciprocating coring spoon holder, and a coring spoon sustained by the holder and provided with barbs at its side edges back of the cutting edge but situated in line therewith.
2. In an apple parer, the combination with a frame, of paring mechanism thereon, a reciprocating coring spoon holder, and a coring spoon sustained by the holder and having asemi-circular shape and provided at one end with a cutting edge, each side of said coring spoon being cut out thereby to form a neck of reduced width and two apple-withdrawing barbs.
3. In an apple parer, the combination with a frame, of a paring knife and means to operate it, a fork shaft having a fork thereon and a groove extending longitudinally thereof, a core doffer situated axially of the shaft and provided with a stem slidably mounted in the groove, the inner end of said stem being bent laterally through the groove and formed into a ring embracing the shaft, a lever pivoted to the frame, an eye also embracing the 'shaft in the rear of the ring and connected to the lever, and means to operate the lever.
4. In an apple parer, the combination with a frame, of a paring knife and means to operate it, a fork shaft having a groove extending longitudinally thereof, a. core do fl'er situated axially of the shaft and provided with a stem slidably mounted in said groove, a ring embracing the shaft and connected to the end of the stem, a lever pivoted to the frame and provided with means to engage said ring, and means to operate the lever.
5. In an apple parer, the combination with a frame, of paring mechanism thereon, a reciprocating coring spoon holder, and a coring spoon sustained by the holder and name to this specification, in the presence having a semi-clrcular shape and provided of two subscribing Witnesses. at one end with a cuttingedge, said coring spoon being cut out at one side to form a FRED MOWER 5 neck of reduced Width and an apple-With- Witnesses:
