VALVE-REMOVER.
This invention relates to devices for re moving valves from engines and especially gas engines, and consists .of a simple and inexpensive means for relievingthe valve stem of its spring pressure so that the key connecting same may be readily removed to allow the valve stem to pass through the openin of the valve seat as will be more fully escribed in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, wherein,-
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the valve connected with a four cylinder engine. Fig. 2 is a perspectii e view of the device, used to remove the valve and stem.
In the drawing, the four valve chambers are designated as A, B, G and D and the operating shaft 5 is driven in the usual manner and carries the cams 6, 7, 8 and 9, operating upon the push rods 10, through their rollers 11 to elevate and lower same and open and close the valves. At the upper end of each push rod is an adjusting screw 12, against which the stem 13 abuts, being pressed down by a spring 14, bearing upon a washer 15 which is retained by the key 16. It frequently occurs that it is neces sary to remove one ofthe valves and in this case it is difficult to remove the pressure of they spring 14 so that the key may be removed in order to allow the stem to be passed through the opening in the bottom of the valve seat.
In orderto elevate the washer 15, a lifter 17 is provided and consists of sheet metal having its front side 18 open, while the rear side is provided with a slot 19 through which the key 16 may be removed.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Oct. 13, 1914.
Application filed December 13, 1911. Serial No. 685,485.
- In Fig. 1 the valve in the seat issh'own with its stem pressing upon the screw 12,
and the roller 11 elevated to its highest.
point. In the valve B, the lifter 17 is shown as being inserted beneath the washer 15, and as the shaft 5 rotates, the stem 13 of the valve seat C .is allowed to descend so that the key 16 is in position for removal.
. IVhen the key is removed through the opening 19, the stem 13 may then be pulled upward so as to pass through the various openings to allowof its removal and the spring 14 will'be supported by the lifter 17 as shown in connection with the valve D which has been removed'with its stem, and the spring retained in its proper position and under tension.
With this simple device a gas engine may be readily taken, apart and repairs made or new valves and stems inserted, and it is obvious that the exact construction is not confined to the device shown in Fig. 2 but any similar lifter which consists practically of a half cylinder with a slot in its rear side could be regarded as the equivalent of the device above described.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A valve lifter comprising asemi-cyli-ndrical thimble, of uniform transverse thickness, the transverse sectional area of the space within the thimble being uniform throughout the length of the thimble, the
thimble being provided with a slot leading in from one edge and located opposite the Open side (if the thimble, said thimble having at its. opposite sides unbroken straight edges which extend the full length of the thimble.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
