Description

T. G. McLAUGHLlNJ Car Brake.
Patented Jun. 20, 1.8.54.
No; "J30;
UNITED STATES PATENT orFrc THOMAS G. MCLAUGHLIN; OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RADIAL ARM FOR CAR-BRAKES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,130, dated June 20, 1854=.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. MOLAUGH- LIN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Means of Operating Railroad-Car Brakes, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
Figure 1, is a longitudinal section of the tender of a locomotive with the improvements attached. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3, is" an end View of the back end of the tender showing the guide plates, the radial arms, and shaft being removed.
Similar letters in. the figures refer to like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the catches or lips formed on the radial arms, together with the guide plates for relieving the horizontal shaft to which the radial arms are firmly secured, of the pressure, or
force necessary to operate the brakes of the several cars 1n a tram.
To enable others skilled in the art to make 'and use my invention, I shall proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The radial arms A are secured firmly on the horizontal (square) shaft B, the journals of which move freely in the timbers C. On the shaft B, a lever D is secured to which a vertical rod E is connected on which there is a lip F which when the vertical rod E is forced downward, thereby raising the radial arms A to a horizontal position, the lip F catches on the under side of the plate G retaining the radial arms A in contact with the upper ends of the slots H in the guide plates I, at the same time bringing their catches, or lips J in contact with the flat surfaces of the guide plates I, which are attached firmly to the back timber K of the tender. By detaching the lip F, from the plate G, the vertical rod E may be drawn upward thereby throwing the radial arms A down, and causing them to rest in an inclined position, by their lower surfaces com- I ing in contact with the lower ends of the slots H, in the guide plates I.
The object for which the radial arms A are designed, is to cause a uniform action of the brakes of each car in the train, either by the resistance offered by shutting steam 01? the locomotive and bringing the hand brakes of the tender into action, or by the power of the locomotive itself when required, and to enable the engineer to back the train without the brakes of the several cars offering any resistance to that movement, as the means by which the radial arms A are thrown downward, and caused to rest in an inclined position may be placed under the control of the engineer.
I am aware that a radial arm turning loosely on the brake lever shaft of the tender, and raised to a horizontal position by a spring and lever in connection with the means of operating the brakes of the tender to which it was attached, has been patented, therefore I do not claim the means for raising the radial arms A as herein described. But
WVhat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The employment of the radial arms A in combination with the catches, or lips J formed on the radial arms A for the purpose of relieving the horizontal shaft B on which the radial arms A are firmly secured, of the pressure, or force which may be exerted against the ends of the radial arms A when operating the brakes of the several cars in a train by the means that have been heretofore invented by me for that purpose.
THOMAS G. MOLAUGHLIN.
