MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent. 4 Application filed January 28, 1913. Serial No. 744,637;
Tocllcthom it may concern:
Be It known what I, JOHN T. Rownnr, a citizen of the United States residing at Pittsbur'h, in the county of Allegheny and State of?enns lvania, have invented a new and usef 1 1m rovement in Molds, of which im' rovement the following is a specification.
ii, invention relates to im rovements in molcs for the production 0 billets, bars, rods, or other metallic forms which are to be subsequently reduced by rolling, hammering or otherwise. I
The object of my invention is to produce a mold b the use of which billets, bars, etc, may e continuousl produced, that is, poured and cooled su ciently. to be discharged therefrom in comparatively solid condition, or the said mold may be used successively to produce a number of billets.
Having this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter.more specifically described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the mold. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are details of the lower' portion of the same showing the separable gate.
Referrin to said drawings, 1 is acasting, floor, plat orm or support, having a. recess 2 in which a funnel shaped openin 3 is formed, the brick or block in whic said opening is formed being made of any suitable refractory material and commumcatin directly with the central orifice 4: througi the support 1, which coincides in the cross sectional area with the interior cavity 5 of the mold. The said mold comprises an interior compartment 5 surrounded by walls 6. The upper end of said mold is screw threaded in order to be secured to the support 1, or it may be secured to said su port in any other suitable manner. T e said walls are surrounded by a water jacket 7, which is likewise screw threaded and secared to said support. The said water jacket is provided with an inlet Sand a discharge 9 for the purpose of admitting purpose of lowerln the temperature of the mold. It is noted a so that the water jacket 1s made in two sections and that where said sections abut or come close together an and discharging constantly water for the resented Oct. 6, 1914;
The metalwhen cooled contracts sufliciently to enable the. same to be discharged readily ppn opening the lower endof the mold. manner. It is noted also that the interior bore of the mold tapers from the top to the bottom so as to permit the ready discharge of the cooled contents, and that said mold is also provided with an overflow discharge 12. j i
The advantages of my mold will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
Having described my invention, claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat: cut is:
A mold the lower end of which is closed by a gate adapted to be opened to discharge In the presence of-- CLARENCE A. WILLIAMs, Jonn H. Bonn e lever is merely shown in conventional JOHN T. ROWLEY.
