NICHOLAS G. ABBATE, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
LIFE-PRESERVER AND TRUNK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914.
Application filed June so, 1914. Serial No. 848,162.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS G. Anna'rn, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LifePreseraers and Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in life preservers and trunks, the main object of the invention being the provision of a.
combinationtrunk and life preserver whichwill perform the functions of either a life preserver or trunk and which may be quickly converted into use from a trunl: to a life preserver as circumstances require.
Another object of my invention is the pro vision of a life prescrver and trunk which will be compact and small in size to permit its storage in a small space or stateroom, which can be instantly adapted for use as a life preserver and proved thoroughly ellicient, which will he of simple and inexpensive constructimi easily applied for use and which generally will be thoroughly cilicient and practical.
With these objects in view, my invention consists of a combined life preserver and trunk embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as shown, described and claimed.
In order-that the construction in detail and the manner of using my invention may be fully understood and its many advantages be appreciated, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a combined trunk and life prcserver embodying my invention.
Figure l represents a top plan View of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents an end view with the parts in the position they assume when the trunk is converted into a life preserver, and Fig. i represents a central longitudinal sectional view of the invention the parts being in the position they occupy when the invention is employed as a life preserver, a human figure being shown in dotted lines. Figs. 5 and 6 represent a view in section and end elevation of a preferred form of cover for the trunk.
Referring by numeral to the drawings in which similar cl'uu'm'tcrs are used to designate corresponding parts in all the views.
of the drawings. The numeral 1 designates the main portion or receptacle of the trunk,
provided in its bottom wall with an opening 2, normally covered by a hinged door 3,
having latch l and to the trunk is secured by suitable fastcnings 4. the top or cover 5. which has a lock (5, and is provided with an opening 7, to receive a protecting cap or cover 8, or to receive a ventilator 9, whose purpose 1s to supply air when the improvement is used as a life prcservcr. Secured within the trunk and fitting snuglv against its walls is the canvas or like bag l0, whose upper end is open and whose lower portion is reduced to provide the pair of leg receiving members l1, the bag normally having its upper portion collapsed and fitting in the upper space 12 ol the trunk, while the leg )ortions normally fit and are received in t 1e space 13. in the bottom of the trunk, thus neatly and compactly receiving and storing the bag when not in use, said bag being further provided with cases or pockets 14 to receive suitable food.
The lower portion of the trunk is provided with a lining 15, of cork or buoyant material, which extends entirely around the trunk and is provided with leg receiving openings 16, wiich aline with the openings in the upper portion of the leg receiving members 11. and at one end a case 17, is provided adapted to receive vessels 18, containing liquid relreslmicnt, said case being provided with a cover l9. From this construc tion it will be observed that the trunk has mounted therein the bag which can have its upper portion extended or raised to form a canopy or protector, which is secured in open position by the rectangular frame 20, securedby fastenings 21. to the bag and by fastcniugs 22, to the lid orcover and sustained in raised position by means of the two sets of braces 23, hinged or pivoted at their lower ends 24-, to the upper poltion of the trunk and having their upper ends adapted to be secured by fasfemngs 25, to the top of the trunk. The leg members depending from the bottom of the trunk and receiving the legs 26, of the per son, while the body portion 2(1, of the person extends into the trunk and canopy and is properly supported by the band 27, which passes around the body and over the shoulders.
It will be observed that the person can stand within the apparatus, or may occupy a sitting position and the bag in one end is provided with the circular window 28, and the elongated window 28, which windows when the person occupies the apparatus will come in proper the vision oft ifi.
person.
From the foregoing description takeii in connexion with drawingsthe manner of:
my invention will be readily understood and; it will be apparent that when used.
as a trunk the hop fits the main portion as usual with the bag and iegmemloers stored Within said main poktionfishe space Within sei'cl main poiifio i iaei 'ng' 'ample to receive the apparel. and other srtlcles necessary for the trsvelo and thatthe} trunk is ofa size to enable'iss stoi age in the stateroom or other plooe withoutinconvenience to the v traveler In the evens films it ie founti necesof a trunk and lifel pr'eserver and can be quilziyfiOnveitOtl 'fi-ozri a 'ti'uiik to a life preserver and in sioi my Weatherthe entire csiio'py" may be closed and the ventilsior applied to the top, or the top may be removeti-siiol the bag remain in extended 21ml o gened posiiion to enable the occupant to be simply supplies. with air and to enable them to flil'slgil'll'j she apparatus with a, degree oi certainty.
35m invention capable of goroduction of; a low price, can be made in any size cleand will perform its functions m an eiliciegit and practical manner.
' In ihe construction shown in Figs 5 end '6, I provicle o preiierrcd and desirable forn of cover, consisting 01 the inc-losing frame fifi adapted to fit upon the ironic or main portion 1 and be secured normally by fasteoings 51 and having hinged thereto at 32, the two-part cover 33, adapted to be secured by the lock 34 and one member or log portions.
section of which carries the ventilator 35. The cover is connected to the, bag in any desired manner sncl can be easily used in performing iis funciions as s trunk cover or when the device is used as a life preserves. I claim 1. A life preserver and trunk, consisting of the main portion the cover for said portion, and a bag fitting; and received in said main portion and silapted to provide an upper canopy portion an v ol lower legreceiv- 2. A life preserver and trunk, consisting of the main portion having openings in its bottom wall, a bag fox-111mg the lining for said mam portion and consisting of lower leg receiving members, and an upper czmolo portion and means to? securing the canopy portion in raised posl'fion.
A life preserver and trunk, consisting of the main portion and cover, a bag forming the lining for said main portion and ;comprising lower leg receiving members and an upper canopy port-ion, a, supporting frame for retaining the canopy portion-in extended position, and a cover connected with said upper portioio. 1 v
4. A hie preserver and trunk, Consisting of ihe main portion and coveit, shag fitting the main portion and comp is ng lower leg members and an upper canopy portion, a frame for suppoi-bmg the canopy, a ventilabor mounted in the cover and sight, Wm-
"(lo'ws mounted in said canopy portion.
5. A life preserver anfitronk, consisting of emain, portion having smopening in its bottom Wall, a cover for said! opening, ii,
cover for the main portion having an opeih ing iherein, a bag mouroised in'the main {mo tion ancl i ovuiing o canopy and. leg n embtEKS, one a supporting meme fog. Sfi1(.l' canopy. Y
