Letters Patent No. 111,271, dated January 24, 1871,
lmeeovEMi-:NT'IN BuRlje-LAcAsKi-:T HAlNDLEs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters lPatent and making part of the same.
I, CLARK STRONG, of XYi'nsted, in the county ot' 'Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented` a sents in.-
Figure 1, a front view of the -casket-hanche complete.
Figure 2, a viront view of the socket-plate detached. Figure 3, a back view` of the socket-.plate detached. Figure 4, a central section ct'. .the socket-plate. Figure v5, a front view of the lever detached. This invention relates to'an iinprovenientin casket-` handles, lnore commonly called Cottin-handles, but adapted to other purposes, the object ofthe invention being to construct the handles so as to render the adjustment of the parts simple and easy, and to bring the strain of the leverage nearly vertical, so that the socket-plate and the screws that hold it Y can thus resist much greater-.strain thanv by thc. ordinary construction. f j
My invention consists in the construction of plate in which a vertical slot is for ed for receiving the `lever, and also a transverse slot 'or inserting the trennions of the lever, and in which beveled jaws are also formed to receive and hold the short arm ofthe lever when raised.
Fig. 2 is a circular plate, which may vary in its ez:-` ternal outline or conguration, A being the hase, and B, an elevation in which is formed the slot a, as seen in tig. 4g, to receive'the truimions d d of the leverG,"
4as. seen in gs. 1 and 5, and the terminus of this slot, which is divided by the wider' slot D, formed through the plate, 1i g. 2, to receive the lever C, figs.Y 1 and 5j, forms bearingsfor the trnnnions d Z of the lever G, figs. 1 and 5, and a small pin or yscrew inserted transversely under either trnnnion, as'seen in the slot-a, tig. 4, keeps the lever in its proper place. Fig'. 3 is a back View of the same plate, in which 'are formed the beveled jaws ff, to receive'. theshort arm of the lever Ggs. 1 and 5, when raised, and serve the double purpose of stopping and holding the lever C, tig. 1, at the desiredpanglewith the socketv plate, rin which it works, and also 'prevent the front: ofthe lever O from being marred by coming against the elevated partof the plate B, iig.' 1-, when the lever is raised iu littng. l .The handles maybe constructed with only one lever, or with two or more connected on the har, in anjY way thatvstyle or length ma require; 1 i
I claim' as my inventionv 1.- The plate A B, having th'e vertical slot D and transverse trnnnion-slot a formed therein, in combi` nation with the lover O and` trunuions gl,"`substautially as and for the p urpose set forth.'
2. The plate, having beveled jaws f j' formed therein, combined with -the'lever C, to stop and hold this lever when raised, and to prevent its front from being ,marred against the plate, substantially as described.
' CLARK STRONG.
