OSWALD S. PULLIAM, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-UNDERFRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (Dot. e, rare.
Application filed October 26, 1910. Serial No. 589,133.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSWALD S. PULLIAM, a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Underframes, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a new and improved metallic underframe for cars comprising a structure preferably constituting cast steel end-portions, a separable middle portion joining the inner ends of the end-portions and separable side-members extending from one end-portion to the other end-portion and secured thereto, said longitudinally extending side members constituting the side-sills of the underframe and preferably consisting of rolled metal members.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an underframe of cantaliver construction comprising two end-portions each formed with a center-bearing and constituting when mounted on a truck a substantially balanced structure, said substantially balanced end-portions being tied together by a middle portion, and. separable side-sills extending from one end-portion to the other and acting as anchors for the cantalivered ends. i
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates applications of my invention Figure 1 is a perspective view of an underframe constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2, a similar view of a modified form of my invention; Fig. 3, a longitudinal sectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a cross section taken on line IV-IV of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a longitudinal section taken on line VV of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 6, a perspective view of a portion of an underframe for passenger cars embodying my invention.-
Referring to the drawing, and first to the form of my invention illustrated by Fig. 1, 2 designates the end-portions of an underframe and as shown, each comprises an integral platform-like structure having a center-bearing 3 and a bolster 4. In addition to these members each portion 2 is formed with longitudinally extending members 5. The end-portions are'designed to v be mounted on a car-truck, and when so mounted constitute substantially balanced structures, said balanced ends being tied together by a middle or connecting member or portion6. As particularly shown by Fig. 3, the inner ends of the end-portions 2 are connected with the respective ends of the portion 6 by being riveted thereto as shown by the numeral 7.
Extending along the sides of the portions 2 and 6 and secured thereto by means of rivets or by other suitable means, I provide separable side-members or members 8 constituting the side-sills of the underframe. Members 8 are preferably rolled steel members of channel form into which the reduced sides of portions 2 and 6 enter.
The form of Fig. 2 shows the end-portions 2 and the portion 6* in skeleton form with,
the separable side-sills 8 secured thereto. This form of my invention comprises members corresponding with the members of the form of Fig. 1, that is, center-bearing 3", bolster 4 and longitudinally extending members 5 In the form of Fig. 6, I have shown a construction embodying my invention particularly designed for passenger cars in which the respective end-portions 2 are formed with a platform extension 10. In this form the end-portions 2 are connected by a middle portion 6 and members 8", represent the side-sill members of the underframe.
What I claim is An under-frame for cars comprising in a cantaliver construction two integral metallic end-portions each constituting a sub stantially balanced structure and including a body-bolster formed with a center bearing, an end-sill, said bolster and end-sill formed with reduced ends, a connecting middleportion comprising a tranverse member formed with reduced ends, and a pair of continuous separable side-members of channel form constituting the side-sills of the underframe with the reduced ends of the transverse'members entered in and secured to the side-members, said side-members extending from end-sill to end-sill.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
