JAMES MEIKLE, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
STEAM-GENERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914.
Application filed April 20, 1914. Serial No. 833,215.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES hlniKLn, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a steam generator of the type comprising an upper steam and water drum, a lower water drum traversed by vertical fire tubes and an intermediate smoke-box through which is led a downcomer tube serving for passage of feedwater and extending from the upper drum to about the lower end of the lower drum, the drums also being connected by return tubes.
According to the present invention, to provide for improved circulation, the said downcomer tube is arranged to receive the lower end of a feed water inlet pipe, while the return tubes are located outside the smoke-boX and connect the lower end of the upper drum with the upper end of the lower drum.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a part vertical section part side elevation of asteam generator constructed in accordance with the invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on the line A-A Fig. 1.
As shown, the steam generator comprises two superposed boiler sections 1 and 2 with an interposed smoke-box 3, the lower section 1 being located over the furnace d. The lower section 1 constructed somewhat after the manner of an ordinary evaporator is constituted by an upright cylindrical shell, the ends of which are formed as tube plates into which are expanded the ends of tubes 5 constituting fire tubes. The upper end of the lower section 1 is also formed with a large central aperture through which is led a wide open-ended tube 6 extending to the vicinity of the bottom of said lower section 1. The upper part of the tube 6 extends through the smoke-box 3 into the upper boiler section 2 which latter serves as a steam and water drum, the upper end of the tube 6 being located below the water level inside said drum.
Gopies 0! this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Dipping into the tube 6 is a feed water pipe 7 led through the upper section 2 and terminating at a point intermediate the sections 1 and 2. The feed water pipe 7 delivers a downwardly directed supply of feed water into the tube 6. One or more return pipe connections 10 disposed externally of the smoke-box is or are provided between the lower end of the upper section 2 and the upper end of the lower section 1, so as to afford a complete circulating system. The furnace 4 is made sufliciently deep to permit any of the fire tubes 5 to be drawn downwardly into the furnace pit, if and when required.
The steam generator proper is mounted to run on rails 11 so that the same may be wheeled out of register with the furnace for inspection the purposes of said rails serving also as guides for a truck by means of which fuel may be delivered to the furnace. Located intermediate the rails is a fuel receiving chute 12 which serves to deliver the fuel deposited therein from the truck into a conduit 13 constituting the fuel inlet of the furnace and equipped with helical conveyers 14- serving to feed the fuel into said furnace. It will be understood that the furnace is also adapted for oil firing.
I claim A steam generator comprising two superposed boiler sections the lower of which is fitted with fire tubes, a smoke-box separating said sections, return tubes outside said smoke-box, said return tubes connecting the upper end of the lower section with the lower end of the upper section, a depending tubular element traversing said smoke-box and serving to lead feed water to the lower section, and a feed water inlet pipe leading into said tubular element.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES MEIKLE.
