Specification `of Letters Patent.
Pateatedoet. c, 1914.
Application filed February 21, 1914. Serial No. 820.267'.
by air is freely supplied to the burner tip.
so that a maximum flame may be obtained from a minimum consumption of fuel, said attachment also being provided with means for supporting the lamp chimneywhereby liability of breaking o1 the chimney by the intense heat will be obviated.
ln its more speciiic aspect, the invention embodies a sectional cap aldapted to be n'iounted upon the body ofthe burner, said cap being provided with means for admit.
ting air to the space between the same and the burner tip and also between the exterior of the cap sections and the lamp chimney.
The invention has for a further object to produce a burner attachment of the above character which is extremely strong and durable in its construction, may be inexpensively manufactured and is highly serviceable and convenient in practical use.
With the above and other` objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that l shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
F or a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following` description and accompanying drawing, in whichp Figure 1. is a vertical section through the lower portion of a lamp chimney showing my improved attachment applied to thel burner and the chimney supported theijeon`;`
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment, the sections thereof being separated; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 8 of Fig. 1; ig. l is a detail section through the engaged edges of adjacent cap sections.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the burner proper which is provided with a base Hangs 6 and a threaded cylindrical portion 7 which is adapted for engagement in a Correspondingly` threaded opening provided in the oil cup or reservoir. `To the base flange 6 of the burner, the usual upwardly extending spring arms 8 are secured for clamping engagement against the lower end of a chimney indicated ill] 9;
Myimproved attachment includes a plurality of similarly constructed sections 10 which are molded or otherwise formed of refractory or heat resisting material oi' any desired character. tions 10 is of concave-convex form in cross section and is provided upon its outer conver; face intermediate of its ends with a laterally projecting enlargement 1-1, having the outwardly and upwardly inclined peripheral face l2, the purpose of which will be later explained.
Upon the lower edge of each of the capl sections l0, `a laterally projecting flange 13 1s formed,` and this iiange is provided with radially disposed ribs indicated at 14- which produce in the bottom face of said flange,
the grooves 15. Each or'l the cap sections is further provided betweenthe enlargement 11 and the ange- 13 and upon its end edge with a flange 16, while the opposite edge of said cap section is rabbeted or recessed vas at 17. yThe sections '10 when properly assembled` upon the burner are arranged with the flange 1G of one section engaged in the groove 1T in the abutting edge of `an adjacent section of the cap. Between these overlapping edge portions of the cap sections and the apex of the cap, each section is reduced in width whereby the slot 18 is formed, to accommodate the wick of the burner.- i
lflfhen the cap sections are arranged upon the` burneriiange 6 as shown in Fig. 1 of the dra-wings, air may enter between lthe flanges 13 on the cap sections and the burner. `tlange 6 to the space between said cap and the burner, so that proper combustion of the fuel at the burner tip is assured anda maximum llame thereby produced. Air will also enter between the lower edge of the chimney and the flanges 13, said chimney being disposed upon the radial ribs 14. This cold air striking upon 4the outer peripheral faces of the cap sections 10 is directed by the inclined walls 12 thereof outwardly against the wall of the chimney 9. Thus liability of breaking or cracking the chimney'by the intense heat of the iiame from the burner vEach of these cap sec-` will be overcome. By constructing the burner cap in sections as above explained, said sections may move relative to each other by expansion thereof and breakage of the cap thereby is prevented. It will thus be apparent that by means of my improved burner attachment, considerable economy may be effected in the use of oil or gas burning lamps.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is believed that the construction, manner of operation and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood.
The attachment is extremely simple in its construction, highly reliable and efficient .in practical use and obviates serious deficiencies in such devices as heretofore constructed. It will of course be apparent that my burner cap may be produced in any desired number of sections, and also in other forms than that illustrated in the drawing. The invention is also susceptible of a great many other modifications in the form, proportion and arrangement of the several ele- `ments and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. The combination with a burner provided with a body flange, of a cap therefor consisting of a plurality of sections each provided with a flange adapted to be seated upon said burner flange, and having a plus rality of grooves in its bottom face through which air is admitted into the space between the burner and the cap, each of said cap sections being also provided with means to support a lamp chimney in spaced relation to the flanges thereon.
2. The combination with a burner provided with a body flange, of a cap therefor, comprising a plurality of similar sections adapted for arrangement upon said burner flange, the adjacent sections having overlapping edge portions and spaced edge portions to accommodate the burner wick, each of said cap sections being further provided in its lower edge with a radial groove whereby air is admitted to the space between the cap and the burner, and additional means formed on said cap sections to support a lamp chimney upon the same and to provide air inlet openings between the lower edge of the chimney and the cap sections whereby air is admitted to the lower end of the chimney exteriorly of the cap.
3. The combination with a burner provided with a body flange, of a cap therefor comprising a plurality of similar sections adapted for arrangement upon said burner liange, the adjacent sections having overlapping edgeffportions and spaced edge portions to accommodate the burner wick, each of said cap sections being further provided in its lower edge with a radial groove whereby air is admitted to the space between the cap and the burner, and additional means formed on said cap sections to support a lamp chimney upon the same and to provide air inlet openings between the lower edge of the chimney and the cap sections whereby air is admitted to the lower end of the chimney exterierly of the cap, each of said cap sections being further provided with means for directing the air outwardly against the chimney wall.
4L. The combination with a burner provided with a body flange, of a cap therefor consisting of a plurality of sections each having a flange formed on its lower edge for engagement upon said burner flange, a plurality of radial ribs formed upon each of said cap flanges and producing grooves in the bottom face thereof through which air may enter to the space between the cap and the burner, said ribs being adapted to support a lamp chimney in spaced relation to the flanges on the cap sections through which air may enter to the space between the cap and the chimney, and an enlargehaving an outwardly inclined face to direct the incoming air outwardly against the wall of the lamp chimney.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. FRED T. HIGGNS. llitnesses DON J. Z'Uirwan'r, BERT E. llVirHRow.
