Be it known that I, JOSEPH KENNEDY, a citizen of the llnited States, and a resident4 of the city, county, and State of New Yorin' have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansion-Bolts, of which the following is'aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to` improvements in. expansion bolts of the type employed as anstone walls, or the like, wherein the material of the wall is of a character not adapted to directly re' ceive and hold a threaded bolt.-
I will describe my invention in the following specification and point out the novel featuresy thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a bolt anchor or made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1 the section being taken on the line 2-2 of the latter figure and -F i g. 3 is a similar view taken on theline 3-3 of Fig. 1. The bore of the shell is composed in this case of two tapered sections 24, 25 converging from their -ends toward the middle of the shell, and having their inner ends of less diameter than the diameter of the bolt for which the expansion is adapted.
A pair of opposed double-wedge shaped enlargements 26 are formed in the rear half of the shell in the slits 22. These enlargements are adapted to receive correspondinglyshapedears or lugs 28 which project laterally from an internally threaded conical expander 30, the latter fitting the conical bore 24 of the shell 20. In/this form of the invention the ears 28 prevent the relative rotation Bof the expanderand the shell.
When the bolt is threaded through the shell it first encounters the restricted bore.

Further inward movement of the bolt will cause its threaded end to enter the-expander 30, and when the end of the bolt strikes the bottom of the hole in which the shell is inserted or the bolt head engages the wall or other support the continued rotation of thefbolt draws the lugs 28 aid the conical body portion of the expander in expanding lthe shell 20.
What I claim is:
l. A bolt anchor comprising a tubular shell of soft material havin' a bore tapered in opposite directions an an internally threaded expander within said shell, the smallest diameter of the bor'e of said shell being less than the diameterl of the threaded portion of the expander.
2. A bolt anchor comprising a tubular shell of soft material having a bore tapered fin opposite directions `rial softer than that and an internally threaded expander Withinesaid shell shaped to vprevent relative rotation of the shell' therewith, the smallest diameter ofthe bore of said shell being less than the diameter of the threaded portion of the expander.
3. The combination of a bolt and a bolt anchor comprising a tubular shell of matcrial softer than that of thebolt, and an internally threaded expander within the shell shaped to prevent'relative rotation of the shell therewith, the bore of said shell having a portion of less diameter than that of the bolt and being arranged to be successively expanded by the bolt and by the expander.
4.4 The combination of abolt and a bolt anchor comprising a tubular shelll of mateof'the bolt and provided with a bore taperinfr from each end toward the middle of the shell, thesmallest diameter of said bore being less than that of the bolt whereby when the bolt is screwed into the shell an initial expansion is el'ected, and an internally threaded expander within the shell adapted to coperate with the bolt to produce the `final expansion.
5. The combination of a bolt and a bolt anchor comprising a tubular shell of material softer than the, bolt slit for a portion of its length, said shell having a bore tapered in opposite directions toward substantially the central portion thereof, the smallest diameter of said bore being less than that of the bolt, said slitbeing provided with a pair of oppositely disposed enlargements and an internally threaded conical expander within said shell having ears in said enlargements. I
