Be it known that I, HENRY R. Parsons,
a citizen of the United States, and a resifor a valve grinding tool, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be used with a valve grinding tool such as the one forming the subject of a patent application made by me, filed September 13, 1913, Serial No. 789,651, and allowed Otcober 8, 1913, said attachment adapted to engage valves having a pair of spaced holes or recesses instead of the usual screwdriver slot, whereby the valves may be rotated in grinding the same.
A. further object of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be connected to the before mentioned tool or to tools or instruments of a similar nature having a screwdriver shaped head, in a somewhat flexible manner so that during the operation of grinding the valve the tool or instrument may be deflected or inclined at an angle from the longitudinal axis of the "alve without affecting the operation of the attachment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be simple, durable, efficient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view which will becomeapparent as, the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which,
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the attachment, as shown in connection with the tool which forms the subject of the above mentioned'application. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged, side elevational view of the attachment, shown as positioned on the tool, Fig. 3 represents a vertical, transverse, sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the broken line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: represents an end elevational view thereof, and Fig. 5 represents a plan view of the blank from which the attach I ment may be formed.
Inpractice the attachment may be formed from a blank, shown in Fig. 5, stamped from sheet metal and bent so as to form a pair of sidewalls 5, provided with alining openings 6, near their upper edges, said side walls being substantially the shape of a wedge, and diverging upwardly and occurring in spaced relation throughout their length. At the lower portion of the attachment and positioned at the ends ofthe bottom portion 7 thereof, or that portion in which the side walls merge, are a pair of lugs or arms 8, projecting downwardly or away from the portion 7, at right angles thereto and in parallel relation to each other, and the arms 8 are adapted to engage the spaced openings or holes in a valve, (not shown) so that the valve may be rotated as the attachment is rotated.
Connecting the side walls 5 at'the ends thereof, are a pair of bridges 9, which occur intermediate the length of the walls, and are adapted to limit the movement'ota screwdriver shaped head 10, formed on'the tool 11, which head is positioned on the attachment by means of a pin 12, extending through the openings 6, and extending loosely through an opening 13 provided transversely of the head 10, said head, when V in position, being spaced from the bottom ortion 7 of the attachment, the bridges 9. occurrin; in such relation with the head that they will limit the movement of the head as the same maybe rotated on,the pin 12. The distance apart of the walls 5 is somewhat greater than the thickness of the tool-head 1.0, and since the opening 13 through which the pin 12 extends, is somewhat greater in diameter than the diameter of said pin, it will be understood that in rotating the tool 11, the latter may be swun or inclined at an angle to the longitudina axis of the valve without interfering with the operation of the attachment, or with the position of the attachment relative to the valve.
As shown in Fig. 5, the blank from which the attachment may be formed, comprises extensions 5 which form the side walls of are'in the form of lugs extending in opposite directions from one of the extensions, which form the side walls ofthe attachment. When the blank is bent into shape, the extensions 5 will be bent upwardly along the transverse, medial line or portion 7, which falls in alinement with extensions 8, forming the aforementioned arms, and which forms the bottom of the attachment, the lugs or arms 8 may then be bent downwardly and the lugs 9, which form the bridges, may be bent at'ri-ght angles to bridge the opening or space betwe'en the side walls, and may be welded or otherwise secured to the opposite wall.' The attachment may readily be used in connectionwith a screwdriver by drilling a hole through the head of the screwdriver and extending pin 12 therethrough, as in the manner previously described, or the at-:
tachment may be used with other tools of a similar nature;

first in one direction and then in the other,
may be imparted to the tool by simultaneously moving the hands in opposite directions, the thumbs of the hands engaging the loops 15 and'pressing downwardly to force the valve against its seat.
- 3 Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to'make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as do not depart from the spirit of the inven-. tion and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A valve grinding tool attachment, comprising side walls in spaced relation and converging downwardly, lugs extending from the lower ends of the walls in spaced andpar'allel'relation, bridges connecting said walls intermediate their ends, said walls provided with alining openings for receiving a Pm- 2'. A valve grinding tool attachment, comprising side walls, lugs depending therefrom andbridges connecting said walls intermediate their ends, said bridges adapted to limit the movement of a tool relative to the attachment.
3. The combination with a screwdriver shaped tool-head, of an attachment comprising side walls occurring in spaced relation to each other,' and converging down.- wardly, lugs depending from the lower ends of said walls and occurring in spaced and parallel relation, bridges connecting said walls intermediate their ends, said walls provided with openings for receiving a pin, said tool-head provided with an opening for receiving said pin, said opening being of a greater diameter than the diameter of the pin, whereby to effect a loose connection between said head and pin, the distance apart of said walls being greater than the thickness of said tool-head, said bridges adapted to be engaged by said tool-head for limiting the rotary motion thereof relative to the attachment.

The combination with a substantially fiat tool-head, of an attachment comprising side walls embracing said tool-head. in spaced relation thereto, a pin extending through said side walls and said tool-head, bridges connecting said side walls adapted to limit the movement of said tool.head relatively to said attachment, and lugs on said attachment for engaging a valve.
5. The combination with a tool-head. of an attachment comprising side walls adapted to embrace the tool-head, means for loosely connecting said walls to said tool-head, means for limiting the movement of said tool-head relative to said attachment and. means carried by said attachment for engaging a valve.
6. A valve grinding tool attachment, comprising side walls adapted to movably embrace a tool head, bridges connecting the side walls and adapted to limit the movement of a tool head relative to the attachment, and means on the attachment for engaging a valve.
