AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 11, 1914. Serial No. 823,924.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Euennro OHOUTEAU lilnnrnnonx, a citizen of the Republic of Chile, and a resident of Rancagua, Chile, South America, have invented .a new and Improved Amusement Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates structures resorts, and 1s so designed as to produce the imaginary effect of an aerial trip to a distant planet in a projectile which is supposed to be projected from the structure, which latter is in the form of a cannon having its muzzle pointed upwardly, while as a matter of fact the projectile is nothing more than a car which is mounted within the structure and has a movement accompanied with an explosion, so that the participants will imagine that they are being projected through space, and at the end of the flight they leave the car and enter a hall, chamber, passageway or cavern containing more or less grotesque and fantastic vegetation, buildings, inhabitants, etc., whereby the travelers imagine they have arrived at their planetary destination, and from this chamber an exit is made again to the street, but at a point remote from the entrance to the amusement device.
The invention has for its general objects to provide an amusement device of the character referred to which is of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, occupies a comparatively small space, requires a minimum number of attendants and constitutes and efiective and safe source of amusement.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an amusement structure which has the external form of a huge cannon barrel set on its breech and having its muzzle pointed upwardly, non means for producing a rising cloud of dense smoke; and means for causing the smoke to be illuminated when an explosion occurs, whereby the illuminated smoke will serve as means to attract patrons and to ad vertise and give publicity to the attraction.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an endless system of cars which extends from a station or landinq high up in the structure to a point in the base thereof, whereby those participating in the amusement are carried from the said land to amusement especially adapted for pleasure v muzzle 2.

With these objects in view, and others which wlll appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts such as will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
- In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar characters of reference indicate: corresponding parts in all the ;views, Figure 1 is a side view of the amusement structure; Fig. 2 1s a section on the :line 2-2; and Fig. 8 is a vertical section of the structure.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a body of the structure which may be made of metal, concrete or masonry, and in shape approximates a barrel of a cannon which tapers upwardly from the base at 1 to the The base of the cannon-like structureis preferably, although not necessarily, extended into the earth and rests on "a suitable foundation. A shaft 7 is mounted in the upper part of the car shaft 4: and has wheels 8' provided with journal- .engaging devices 9 which engage the journals 10 on the sides of the cars 5, such journals forming f pivotal connections between adjacent links 6 of the endless chain. These devices 9 are equivalent to the teeth of sprocket wheels for engagement with a sprocket chain. At the bottom of the car shaft 4 is another horizontal shaft 11 which has wheels 12 equivalent to the wheels 8 in the upper part of the shaft. The cars are of course pendant so that they will always maintain a vertical position, and the endless system of cars is adapted to move in such a direction that the cars on the left side, Fig 3, will descend, while those on the right side Will ascend. The power transmitting or driving plant 13 may be connected with the lower shaft 11 to impart movement to the cars, and this mechanism may include a centrifugally-operated brake means 14, whereby the descending movement of the cars under the weight of the can be retarded. A brake shoe 15 operated by a fluid or other motor 16 may be employed to stop the movement of the cars whenever desired.
The entrance .to the amusement structure is had-through a doorway 17 at the base 1, and vby means'of stairs 18 or equivalent means access is had to a station or landing 19. Those who desire to take the imaginary trip to a remote planet, as for instance, the planet Mars, enter the cannon or body A at 17, and after securing tickets at the ticket window 20-they ascend to the upper portion of the structure, such structure being entirely devoid of windows or light emitting means, since its exterior surface is solid and unbroken, and consequently the interior of the cannonis lightedat all points artificially, as by incandescent lights 21. At the landing 19 there may be provided an anteroom 22 at which will :be stationed an announcer who will explain the contemplated trip to the planet Mars and give the necessary directions, it being important that he impress it upon the passengers the fact that they will make an ascent into space when the cannon is fired .ofi. The passengers proceed from the anteroom 22 through a door 23 and travel through rooms and passages in the direction indicated by the arrows, Fig. 2, until they come to the entry 24 to the projectile, which latter is entered through an opening or doorway 25. The projectile is nothing more than one of the cars 5 which has come to a position of rest at the entry 24;. When u the car :has received the-required number of passengers a conductor on the car will give the required signal and the'engineer whose duty it is to control the movements of the cars will permit the passenger-filled car to descend, the movement-being so slow that the passenger isnot-aware that itis going downwardly, especially'in view of the fact that it has been im-presed on him by the .announcer in the antechamber 22 that they would ascend. At the time the car begins to move there Will be a loud explosion as if the car or projectile were being projected from the cannon. At the same time there will be a smell of powder smoke. In each carrnay bezarran-ged a phonograph 26 to afford amusement to the passengers in the flight to Mars, and telephones 27 will be installed therein for pretended messages between the conductor and the earth from which-the car is projected.

The passengers leave the car at the station 29 in the basement of the structure, which station is supposed to be the landing place on the planet Mars. The attendants draw aside curtains 30 to admit the passengers to a vestibule 31, and then the door 32 is opened to admit the travelers to a chamber, hall or cavern 33, which is lighted and contains fantastically-dressed persons who represent Martians, as well as representations of scenery, dwellings and the like, whereby the travelers will receive the impression that they have arrived on a new planet. The attendants conduct the travelers through the chamber 33 and up one or more flights of stairs 34; to a small building 35 which has doors 36,Whereby the travelers expect that they are being led into a building of which the interior of the building 35 is the vestibule. The attendants at the doors unlock them so as to permit the passengers to pass into the supposed building, but instead the doors lead out to the sidewalk, so that in reality the small building 25 is the point of exit of the amusement structure, and this exit is located at a point remote from the entrance 17. The upper part of the structure A is built with a furnace 37 in which straw or other fuel is burned so as to produce a thick cloud of smoke which rises and passes into the air through the muzzle at 2, and searchlights or projectors 38 are manipulated by an attendant so as to cast rays of light on the smoke and illuminate the same as it leaves the structure, whereby persons from all points far and near can see the flashes of illuminated smoke, which flashes will be accompanied with loud detonations produced by a detonating device 39 in the upper part of Such detonating device may discharged out of the muzzle of the cannon.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which i the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of theappended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

An amusement device for creating the impression of being projected to a distant planet or through space, comprising a cannon-like structure having an entrance, passenger-conveying means therein, means for producing sounds of explosion in the structure, means of exit, means for producing and discharging smoke from the top of the structure, means for illuminating the discharged smoke, and a detonating device in the upper portion of said structure.
5. An amusement device for creating the ii'npression of being projected to a distant planet, comprising a cannon-like structure, a landing or stat-ion in the upper portion thereof, a landing or station in the base of the structure, means whereby passengers can reach the upper landing. a series of movable cars for conducting the passengers to the lower landing, mechanism for controlling the movementof the cars, a chamber under ground and communicating with the base of the structure, stairs leading upwardly from the chamber, and an exit building at the head of the stairs.

An amusement device for creating the impression of being projected to a distant planet, comprising a cannon-like structure, a landing or station in the upper portion thereof, a landing or station in the base of 6 0 the structure, means whereby passengers can reach the upper landing, a series of movable cars for conducting the passengers to the lower landing, mechanism for controlling the movement of the cars, a chamber under ground and communicating with the base of the structure, stairs leading upwardly from the chamber, an exit building at the head of the stairs, and means above the upper landing for producing smoke and discharging it out of the top of the structure.
7. An amusement device for creating the impression ofbeing projected to a distant planet, comprising a cannon-like structure,
a landing or station in the upper portion thereof, a landing or station in the base of the structure, means whereby passengers can reach the upper landing, a series of movable cars for conducting the passengers to the lower landing, mechanism for controlling the movement of the cars, a chamber under ground and communicating with the base of the structure, stairs leading upwardly from the chamber, an exit building at the head of the stairs, and means in the structure for producing detonations.
