SIGNALING DEVICE.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that l', CHARLES W. GUILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fhoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented new and useful improvements in Signaling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
'lhis invention relates to improvements `in signaling apparatus for railw-ays and has particular application to an apparatus for indicating` whether or not a switch is open or closed, to the main line.
in carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a signaling ap paratus of the class described whereby `a detouating signal will be given, in the event of a switch being opened, to advise the en gineer of a train approaching such switch as to the condition of the track ahead.
lt isalso my purpose toprovide a detonating signal apparatus ywhich will be rendered operative from the switch points so that when the switch is open the apparatus will be in operative position, while when the switch is closed the device will beinoperative, so far as signaling is concerned. Furthermore, l aim to provide an apparatus of the class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efliciency and durability coupled with cheapness of cost in manufacture and installation and which will be reliable and efficient in use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a railway track and siding showing my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view inside elevation of the same, parts being broken away.
Referring now to theaccompanying drawing in detail, 1, 1 designate the track rails of the main line, while 2, 2 indicate the rails of the siding or branch line, the switch points controlling traffic from the main line onto the siding or branch line being indicated at 3.
lin the present instance, substantially arcuate shaped metallic bars 4:, t are secured to the confronting faces of the switch` points 3 and extend appropriate distances in advance of such switch points and have fastened thereto a transverse switch throwing rod 5 disposed beneath the rails of the main `line and terminating at the opposite sides thereof.
The numeral 6 designates some appropriate form of switch stand in which, in the present instance, is journaled a vertical crank shaft 7 equipped at its upper end with the usual form of target 8 and provided with a throwing lever 9, a link 10 connecting one end ofthe switch throwing har 5 with the crank portion of the shaft 7. Thus, the switch points may` befmanipulated to open or close the siding or branch line to the main line, by manipulating the handle 9, the latter rotating the crank shaft and so imparting sliding movement to the bar 5 through the mediunrot' the link 10.
My improved signaling apparatus is prefcrably located adjacent to one side of the rails of the main line and at an appropriate distance in advancek of the switch points 3, 3 so that when a signal isgiven the engineer of the train approaching the switch will have ample time in which to shut off the power and apply the brakes. This signal apparatus is preferably incased in a suit- 'able housing 11 having the wall thereof adjacent to the respective line of rails 1 formed with an elongated horizontal slot 12. Journaled in vertically alining bearings 18, 13 suitably secured within thek housing 11 is a vertical shaft 14e having an outwardly eX- tending arm 15 suitably fastened to the upper fend thereof and equipped with an outwardly projecting leaf spring 16 upon which is seated and appropriately secured a torpedo or detonating element 17. Secured to the shaft 14 within the housing 11 is an arm `15 disposed in a horizontal plane and connected by means of a cord, cable or other flexible element 19 with a chain or the like 20 trained over a guide sheave 21 journaled in suitable bearings adjacent to the switch stand 6, the free end of the chain 2O being fastened to one of the bars 4. A suitable pipe 22 preferably incases the cable or cord 19 so as to protect the same. Should the switch bar 5 be slid under the action of the handle 9, crank shaft 7 and link 10 to throw the switch points 3 to a position to open the branch line to the main line, as
illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, motion will be transmitted through thechain 20, cable 19 and arm 18 to the shaft 14 with the effect to rotate the latter within its bearings and somove the arm 15 through an arc to throw the leaf spring `16 and the toryvised that the switch is open and control his train accordingly.
1n order that the shaft 14 will be rotated within its bearings to remove the leaf spring 16 and torpedo from the track, as when the switch is irst opened to establish communication between the main line and the siding and subsequentlyclosed, l employ a tension device, in the present instance, in the form of a coiled contractile spring Q3 having one end suitably fastened to the interior of the easing 11 and the opposite end secured to the arm 15. Thus, when the switch points are in a position to close the siding to the main line and maintain the continuity of the latter, the shaft 14 will be rotated within its bearings automatically so as to throw the detonating` signal element out of the path of the wheels Aof an oncoming train.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. It will be seen that I have provided a signaling apparatus which operates, in eitect, automatically to advise the engineer of a train approaching an open switch of the condition of the traclnvay thereby enabling him to proceed with canfaces of said points, a switch throwing rod A disposed transversely of the track rails below the latter and connected with the under iaces ot said bars, and means tor actuating said rod to throw the switch points to the desired position.
