Specification of Letters Intent.

Application tiled "September 5, 9158. crial No. ',Jitll.
.To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that l", ioni-J, a citizen of the United States, ldittsiield, county of Earl-isidro, lida-ssachusctts,v have invented certain. new useful improvements in Systems of lilies .cai l' ribution, ci? which the iollov ing specification.
The present invention relates more especially to vapor electric apparatus such, jor example, alternating; current mercury vapor rcctitiers or lamps and is applicable to such devices Whether the same he ar ranged 'for operation with single-phase current or with muti-phase current.
llt is the ohjcct ci? my invention to provide "for a rectifier or similar device a unitary structure comprising both supply reactanoes 'ior obtaining a point or' intermediate poten tial and a sustaining cathode reactance.
liy this construction l am enabled to secure an apparatus ofless weight, less cost, less hulk, and oi higher eiiiciency because 'the iron core is utilized for both sets of coils and with less total energy loss. This core is so arranged with respect to the coils that it el. FRANK, residing at Alorms a closed magnetic circuit with respect to those coils which provide the point oi inoperates as an open magnetic circuit for the coil in the cathode circuit.
The scope or' my invention is more particularly set forth in the claims appended hereto while the invention itself will per 'li-.ips he better understood oy reference tothe follow description taken in connection with 'the accompanying drawing which slums my invention embodied, by Way of illustration, in a mercury arc rectiier system.
The rcctiier consists as usual ci' an eX- einelon l containing mainanodes 2 '3 and a cooperatin cathode lt is also provided with a s'artingy; anode the 'iunction oi which is now Well understood. The anodes are connected to aiternating current supply conductors and 7 across which are connected inductance coils S and 9.
`'illnessl coils are Wound upon separatelegs oi a magnetic core l0 and have tvto terminas connected to each other as'indicated. rihe flux generated by these coils passes through the closed magnetic circuit afforded by the core. The cathode 'circuit includes a State of iediate potential and at the same time ity battery load il 'which is connected in series by Ineens of conductor 12 with an inductance coil iii/to the common connection for the alternating' current inductance coils -8 and 9., The coil i3 is Wound around the outside of vthe core 10,A and the circuit of lts ,tina is therefore completed partially through the air. in the drawing it is indicated as being placed transversely across cores 8 and 9 and superposed upon coils 8 and 9, hut this is not essential. inasmuch as the magnetic flu-.r caused hy coils 8 and 9 is pulsating and as the iiux caused'in the core by coils 13 is not in. the same direction as the pulsating flux generated by coils 8 and .9, a single core may be used in this manner to advantage. The unidirectional flux of coil 13 opposes the flux generated by coils 8 and 9 in one halt` of the core and assists it to an equal extent, in the other half, thus causingA no increase in the total resultr ant finzi. in this manner, the eii'ect of a large core Jfor coil i3 is secured Without additional expense.
What i claim as new and desire to secure by Lettere Patent of the United States, is zl. The combination o1 a winding, a vapor .electric device having its anodes connected to terminals of said winding and lts cathode to an intermediate point, an inductive vcoil in the cathode circuitand a core forming a closed magnetic circuit with respect to said Winding and an open magnetic circuit With respect to said coil.
2. 'l'he combination. of a closed magnetic core, coils 'Wound upon legs of said core and having a common connection, a vapor electric device having its anodes connectedI to the free terminals oit' said coils, and its cathode to the common connection and an inductive coi] in the cathode circuit surrounding said core.
3. in a system of distribution, the combination of current supply leads, a rectifyingf device having anodes connected thereto, inductance coils connected across said. leads and providing a point of intermediate potential, another inductance coil in series with the cathode and connected to said intermediate point. and a core common to. all said coils providing a closed magnetic circuit Yfor the coils "in the anode circuit and an open magnetic circuit for the cathode coil. 4i. n electrical system, comprising the combination o a core, coils Wound on separate legs of said core, a series connection for eoV said coils, e device having` conductivity, anodes of said device and terminals of seid coils, a coil Wound over the outside of seid core as a Whole and connections for seid coil to n cathode of said device and to an intel1` mediate point on said series connected coils.
5. An electrical system, comprising the combinzttion of current suppiy leeds, e mag" netic core, induetance coils Wound on sepa.- rete legs of said core and connected across said leads and in series with each other, e device having a plurality of ancdes connectunidirectionzti connections between respective a cathode connected ed respectiveiy to terminals of snidcoils und to an intermediate point2 and c coil .in series with seid cathode carrying unidirectional current :ind wound outside beth the Series connected coils end said core :is Whole.
