Description
tni-D /ttia @anni @da DAVID vWaupaca HERSEY, orrnnenonn, MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 111,208, dated January 24,1871.
OVEM ENT IN' VEGTABLE-CUTTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To allpersons lto-whogn these presents may coute Be it Vknown ,that I, DAT/1D WALLACE.- HERSEY,
4of Pembroke,.of the county of Washington and State .of Maine, have invented an Improved Machinefor Slicing Fruits or Vegetables; anddo hereby'- declare the same to be fully described in the following speciication and represented in the"accompanying-drawtwo or any other suitable number of screw-bolts, c c,
Aprovided with thiimb-nnts d d.
The boards b b are arranged, as shown, with the frame a between them, they, to receive it, being,
grooved, as exhibited at e e.
The screw-bolts go through thc two boards below the pivotal Vframe a, the heads ofl thc bolts being against one board, and the screws being projected beyond the other, so as to receive the nuts (Z d.
Each of the boards has a series of parallel slits made in its upper edge, and it also has a metallic bar or plate, f, fastened to it on its inner side and at the bases of the several slits.
A thin metallicwire or band, B, fastened at its opposite ends to the boards, is extended from one boardV tothe other and in the slits of the two, it being laid therein ina serpentine form, that is, in manner as represented, so as to constitute a series of parallel knives or cutters or a grater, as represented. it resting on the two support b`ars ffl Frm the above it will be seen that, by setting up the nuts d al on their screws, we may draw toward each other the lower parts of the boards b b, soY as to force the upper vportions of the" said boards asunderf,
and strain the band-knife or series of knives.
An arm, h, projects from one ofthe boards b b, and has pivoted to it one end of a lever, C, carrying a ribbed platen, D, the said platen being provided with a series of parallel ribs, y g, to extendbetween the knives when the platen. is drawn or resting ou them.
From the upper part o'ithe other board a furcated standard or plate, h, projects, its purpose being to receive inits slot 'i the lever C, so as to so guide it during its descent as to insure the ribs of the platen pressing between'the knives.
Furthermore, the lower part of each of the boards b b is socketed or recessed to receive two bars, E E,
the sockets of one'board being of a dovetail form, as shown in Figure 5, which is a side view of the board. Thebars' are dovetailed to enter the dovetail sockets,
though in other respects they are formed in corr` spondmc'o with the' other sockets, which are rectan- Ygular inlscotion. These bars are for supporting the machine over and on a bowl or tub, whenv it may be desirable to employ it in connection with such.
To use t-he machine, a fruit or vegetable to be sliced is to be laid ou the grate or series of knives,`and the lever is to he depressed so as to force the platen down upon the article and crowd it against the grating or knives, which will split or sever it in pieces or reduce it to slices.
I claim- 1. The combination of the single band-wireB and the metallic rests f f with the boards b b, slitted on their upper edges to receive thewire, and the strain- Aing devices a c d, substantially as set forth.
2. The' arrangement of the bars E E with'the frame A carrying the band-knife B and platen D, substantially in the manner as specified.
` DAVID YALLACE HERSEY.
