To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, LEE L. (lesson, citizen of the United-States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Rogers and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breeders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to breeders for young.
chicks, and the like, and especially to the type known as out-door breeders.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved hover construction, having novel features of circulation and ventilation, and to provide an improved heating arrangement for supplying warm air to the hover. 1
In order that my invention may be readily understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete breeder; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hover and associatedparts on an enlarged scale, the walls of the breeder being shown in section; Fig. t is a central, longitudinal, vertical section through the apparatus shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing a lamp in position; Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig. l; and, Fig. 7 is a vertical section through part of the heating drum and smoke flue, .parts being shown in elevation.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the breeder comprises a house or coop 1, having a slanting hinged roof 2, andprevidedin its front walls with upper and lower hinged windows 3 and 4-. Ventilation openings 3 may be provided in the end walls" of the breeder if desired. The breeder is divided into upper and lower compartments by means of a floor 5, on which the hover is supported, and the lower compartment is provided with a floor 6, preferably supported slightly above the level of the ground. 7 designates the hover as a whole, and from the top thereofe xtends an elbow 8 transverse partition 13. Such partition and the end and side walls of thebrooder form a housing in which the lamp box is located. Such housing has a removable top 5, in the plane of the floor '5, which top may be conveniently supported by the partition 13.
Within the housing just described is located a lamp box 15, preferably formed of sheet metal, and preferably insulated from the partition 13, and from the floor 6, by means of a layer of asbestos 14:. The lamp boX hasa top 16 and a door 17, through which the lamp may be inserted. The door 17 is provided with an opening 18 covered with a piece of mica 18 through which the lamp may be seen.
' It will be observed that the lamp box is spaced fremthe sides, top and back of the housing to provide air passages 19 and 20 which surround the lamp box on all sides. Draft tubes 21 preferably extend through the floor 6 and project upwardly into the lamp boXat each side thereof. An air con duit. 22 passes through and is rigidly supported by the door 12 in such a position that its innerend abuts against the door 17, and registers with the window opening 18 therein. Said conduit is also provided with a lateral opening 23 (see Fig. 6) which establishes communication between the conduit and the space 19. Such'opening is controlled by an adjustable slide 24:, which projects from the outer end of the conduit.
The lampbox has a centrally disposed opening 25in its top wall 16, and from such opening extends a conduit 26 to a heating of a smoke flue, provided with a damper 9,
breeder between the floors 5 and 6, is a drum 27, located in the hover. Such drum is of flat, cylindrical form and is suspenc ed in a horizontal position by means of brackets 28 secured to the rigid top 29 of the hover, a sheet of asbestos 30 being interposed if desired. The heating drum is suspended below the top of the hover to provide an air space 31 and a conduit 82, open at both ends, extends vertically and centrally through the drum and establishes communication between the air space 31, above the drum, and the chick space between the drum and the floor 5. Surrounding the drum, but spaced apart therefrom, is an annular rigid wall 33 preferably formed of sheet metal, and also preferably covered with a protecting layer 85 of asbestos. Such rigid wall does not ex tend to the floor 5, but is supported by means of legs 84-, 36, and 37, the legs 3-1 and 37 being comparatively wide. The leg 37 has an opening 38 therethrough which com municates with a ventilation duct 39 formed by a semi-cylindrical piece ofshcet metal 40, preferably protected by asbestos 35.
Surrounding the rigid wall 33 of the hover and the legs 36 is a curtain 41 which is secured at its top edge to the top of the hover, and has its lower edge reaching sub stantially to the floor 5. This curtain may be cut away at each side of the leg 34, and also at each side of the fine 40.
Extending through the rigid wall 33 of the hover and surrounding the conduit 26 is a second conduit 4E2, the lower end of which restsupon and is supported by the removable top 5 of the lamp box housing. This conduit may be surrounded by a wire screen 43; so as to prevent the chicks from coming in contact therewith. Connected with the conduit 42' and extending on each side thereof are branch conduits ia, which pass downwardly through the cover 5 of the housing and communicate with the space 20 between such housing and the lamp box.
' The operation is as follows: A lamp l5 being'placed in the lamp box 15 immediately under the opening 25, with its chimney 46 projecting into such conduit, the products of combustion pass upwardly through the conduit 26 and into the heating drum 27. From thence they pass out through the pipes 8, 10, and 11, and are controlled by means of the damper 9. Air for the lam is supplied through the tubes 21, and the chimney 46 is provided with the usual mica window, through which, and the window 18, the operation of the lamp may be observed without opening the door. As shown in F 5, the lamp chimney i6 is provided with a wire screen top, 47, and this acts as a safety device to extinguish the lamp should the screen become clogged with soot, by reason of a smoky flame. Fresh air also passes through the lateral opening 23 and thence through the passages 19 and 20,
around and over the lamp box and is there by warmed. From the housing this warmed air passes upwardly through the conduits ll and into the space between the heating drum and rigid wa ll of the hover, where it is confined by such walls and the curtain. lit will be noted that the top 29 of the hover without openings, and hence the escape of the warm air is prevented. Inside the hover the air circulates through the central conduit 32, the space 31 and the annular space around the drum, thus maintaining a uniform temperature in the chicl: space underneath the drum. Excess air or the foul and cooler air passes out through the opening 38 which, it will be noted, is located near the floor of the hover. It will be observed that the lamp box is of comparatively large area, and that the iii-coming air passes around all four sides and the top of it, thus insuring the suflicient heating of such air.
It will thus be seen that l have provided a brooder of simple construction having many desirable features as to the heating and circulation of the air, and it is thought that the many advantages of the ariungement will be readily appreciated without further discussion.
What I claim is: 1. In a brooder, a heater comprising a metallic lamp box, a housing therefor spaced therefrom on sides and top, a vertical conduit communicating with the interior of said lamp box and serving to convey the products of combustion, a second conduit surrounding the first, and a pair of branch conduits connected at one end with said. second conduit and communicating at their other end at separated points with the space between the top of the lamp box and housing, whereby said second and branch conduits serve to convey air heated by passage over said lamp box.
2. In a brooder, a hover, a heating drum therein, a metallic lamp box, an outer housing entirely surrounding said lamp box and spaced therefrom on all four sides and top to provide air passages, a conduit extending upwardly from the interior of said box to said heating drum for conveying the products of combustion, a second conduit inclosing the first, and extending upwardly from the top of said housing and thence laterally to said hover, said second conduit communieating with the space between said housing and lampbox, means for supplying air through the bottom of said lamp box to support combustion, and means for supplying air to the space between said lamp box and housing, at one side of the latter, whereby incoming air is caused to circulate around and over the said lamp box, before passing through said second circuit to said hover.
