Description

P. SABU.
I SLIDING JAW WRENCH. i APPLICATION FILED 11110.29, 1913.
1,111,616. Pa nted 861115.22, 1911.
WITNESSES INVENTOFI ,W Why/Mia v if THE MORRIS PEYVERS'OO FnOTD-LHMQ. WASHIHGIDN. 0. c
rAUnsAB'o, or RACINE, Wisconsin. ,7
To all whom it: concern Be it known thatuI, PAUL SABo, a cltizen of the United States gofAmerica, residing at Racine, in the county ofRacine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .111 Sliding-J aw Wrenches, of which the following 1s a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to sliding jaw wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench of that class, in a manner as hereinafter set fortlnwith means for maintaining the sliding jaw in the position to which it has been adjusted, said means being further capable of being conveniently 're'f leased to enable the sliding jaw to be quickly shifted. when occasion so requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a sliding jaw wrench, which is com paratively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily adjusted and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention I consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Inthe drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts through-' out the several viewsz-Figure 1 is an elevation of a slidingjaw wrench in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation broken away, Fig.3 is a sectional front elevation broken away, Fig. a is a side elevation broken away, partly in'section and with one of the elements of the slidin jaw removed, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation roken away.
Referring to the drawings, 6 denotes a shank which is oblong in cross section and which has its front edge, intermediate its ends formed with transverse teeth 7. Fixed to the outer end of the shank 6 is a jaw 8, said shank 6 being connected to said jaw 8 centrally with respect thereto. Mounted upon the inner portion of the shank 6 is a handle 9, the latter being positioned inwardly with respect to the teeth 7.
The reference character'lO denotes a slidsLInIne-JAwwnENon.

ingjaw which seemed centrally thereof with an opening 11 for thepassage of the Formed integral with the front of the'jaw 10 at the inner terminus there of is a rearward extension 12 having integral therewith a transversely extending semi-cylindrical block'13 of a length greater than the width of the extension 12. The block 13 at its inner portion. has a. rear.- wardly extending fiangeQIL of thesame width 'as the" width of the extension 12.
The'block .1 3- centrally thereof, is provided with a chamber 15 opening toward the shank 6 16, andsaidblock13 at one s1de 1s provided with a stepped pocket 17 closed" through the medium of aplate 18, mounted inthelarger portio'nof said pocket l7. Journaled in the block 13 is a shaft 19 which is disposed transversely with respect to the shank 6, and extends through the chamber '15 and into a portion of smaller diameter of the pocket 17. Fixed to the shaft 19 so as to rotate therewith, and arranged within the chamber 15 is a toothed wheel 20, which engages with the teeth 7 and constitutes a retaining means to prevent the shifting of the slidable jaw body and shank when said shaft 19 is locked from movement.
Associated with the shaft 19 is a locking device therefor which consists of a toothed disk 21 arranged within the smaller portion of the pocket 17 and fixed to the shaft 19. Journaled in a recess 22, formed in the block 13, and opening into the pocket 17, is a locking member 23, which has a reduced cylindrical portion 24 journaled in the disk 16. The locking member 23 is furthermore provided with a semi-cylindrical portion 25 which opposes the disk 21. The outer end of the locking member 23 has a head 26. The reduced cylindrical portion 24 of the locking member'23 provides a pair of shoulders 27 28, which when said locking member is in position-prevents longitudinal movement of When the semi-cylindrical portion 25 of the locking member 23 extends into the disk 21,
between the teeth' l of said disk 21, the
' shaft 19 is locked from movement whereby the toothed Wheel 20 cannot rotate and owing to the fact that the teeth of the Wheel 20 engage in the teeth 7 of the shank 6, the sliding jaw 10 is arrested from movement.
By shifting the member 23 to move the semicylindrical portion 25 clear of the disk 21,
the shaft 19 is free to rotate whereby the jawlO can be shifted to the position desired upon the shank 6.
What I claim is 1. A Wrench comprising a toothed shank having a fixed jaw, a sliding jaw body adjustable upon said shank, shaft rotatabiy. mounted in said body, a toothed Wheel ,car-
, ried by the shaft and permanently engaging the teeth of the shank, a toothed disk fixed to the shaft, and a rotatable'iiocking member carried by said jaw body and having a semioylindrical portion capable of extending into said disk for looking the same when said member is shifted thereby preventing Copiesof this patent may be obtained for rotation of said shaftand locking ja w body in the position to Which it has been'adjusted.
2. A wrench' omprising a toothed shank having a fiXed jaw, a sliding jaW body adjustable 'upon said shank, ashaft rotatably -mounted in said body, a toothed Wheel carried by the shaft andpermanently engaging the teethof the"; shank, a toothed disk fixed to the shaft, a rotatablelocking member carried by said'jaW body and having a i semi-cylindrical portion capable of extending into said diskfor lookingthe. same when said member is shifted therebyqpreventing rotation of .said shaft and locking the jaw body in the position to Which itlhas been adjusted, and means to prevent longitudinal movement of said lookingmember. p
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
