MAKING-READY PROCESS.
To all whom itmag concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT VICTOR RAUL, a subject of the King of England,residing at 3 Hillend road, Lambhill, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Making-Ready Processes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to letter-press printing by means of stereotype or other plates or their equivalent as used on rotary and on fiat bed machines, and has for its object to provide for the more. ready and effective leveling or. making ready of the printing surfaces of such plates or thelike in orderto obtain a uniform printed impression therefrom, free from the occurrence of heavy and light parts due to that variation in the level of the type. which is found in the cast plates or their equivalent.
' The invention comprises the hereinafter described improved process of effecting the aforesaid leveling or making ready of the printing plates or the like.
According to the present ordinary method of making ready, the type. plate is mounted on the'prlnting machine and a first impression printed therefrom. The paper 'with such impression thereon is then examined and in places corresponding with the parts Where the impression or printing is very light, pieces of paper are pasted and underlaying or overlaying as it is termed, according as to whether the paper. is inserted beneath the printing plate or upon or adjacent to the rotary or flat impression surface, is repeated until a uniform impression is obtained. It has'been proposed to produce making ready pieces from plastic materials molded or cast so as to have the required contour. A further proposal involves the use of chemical means for treating the making ready piece.

In making ready, in accordance with this invention, I mount the type plates, if intended for use in a rotary printing machine, upon a cylinder of the same diameteras the cylinder of the-machine-on which they will be subsequently mounted for service. The surface of the type is then coated with ink, after which a sheet-of stout paper, or other suitablematerial, is tightly stretched pve'r the said surface and secured thereon.

The aforesaid grinding or thinning of the paper may be effected in various waysand with various material and either by hand or power. In some cases the surface of the making ready piece may be simply rubbed over the abrasive surface or vice-versa. After the conclusion of such grinding or rubbing down operation, the sheet of paper or other material is stripped ofl and the type plate or plates or their equivalent mounted on the cylinder of the machine on which the printing is to he done. A sheet of clean paper is now wound around the blanket cylinder of the machine and an impression printed thereon. 'The invention is applicable for printing with machines of various kinds, either rotary or flatbed. The making ready piece may be applied either asan overlay, as hereinbefore described, on the blanket cylinder or its equivalent, or as an underlay beneath the. printing plates or their equivalent, or two making ready pieces may be employed,
the underlay piece being prepared and placed in position before the overlay iece is prepared. This double making rea y will not asa rule be necessary, but may be adopted with a very irregular printing plate.

and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. The herein described process which consists of grinding the making ready piece While it is in contact with the printing surface whereby is produced a sheet of varying thickness, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein, described process which consists of grinding away portions of 'the making ready piece to compensate for Variations in the level of the printing surface whereby there is produced a sheet of varyingthickness, substantially as described.
3. The herein described process which consists in-placing the making ready piece in contact with the printing surface and grinding those portions over the high parts of the type plate, the portions over the low parts yielding.
