Description

A i In 'WILLIAM IaIILTON'BRG /VN. OF JGHNSTG'WI I. PZNFSYLVANIA TONG Specification. of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 1914. Serial No. 847,893.
To all Hf/lOf/L it in (11 concern Be it known that l, lViLLmM HIT/yon;
Bnon'x.n citizen of the United Stu-ins. re
siding at Johnstown. in the county oi Cznnhrni and State of Perms vnnm. have in; vcntecl a new and useful Tongs, i' which I are he following a spccilicn'l'ion.
My invcntion relates to the ronstru '-tion of tongs, and more particularly to tongs usevl in handling the crucibles oniplovcrl in making crucible steel. (finch crucibl t, which are nnirlc of clay or pliunlmgo. hecome softened when subjected to the intenne heat of the crucible fnrnzice. so as to he easily crushed or distorted when gripped. or clamped by the jaws of tie tongs ordinarily employed in handling the heated crucibles.
One object of my invention is to provide tongs of novel construction having iin provecl means for engaging with tlllll grasping the, crucibles in the handling thereof incidental to making and pouring the molten metal. so (18 to avoid cracking or crushing and prevent distortion of the highly heated crucibles.
Another object of my invention is to provide a tongs having improved incnns where-- by handling of the crucible in removing the cruoihlc from the furnacc nnvl in pouring the molten metal from the crucible is fzicilitficclil.
Still further objects of the invention will appear hereinafter as the invention is more fully (lcscribncl in the specification and poinlml out in tho appended claims.
Referring" to the vlrovving s. forming purl of this s} ccifi ntion. Figure l is :i itle elevation, partly in section. showing tongs constructed and arriingcl'l'iu accordance with my invention. Fig. 52 a plan partly in section of the tongs construction shown in Fig. l. v on the line lllill of Fig. 2. showing the construction of the hinge or joint of the lzongs and the swivel construction onnliling the longs to he turned or tigioccl in the crucible pouring operations. i is :1 side olcvntion. partly in .3 .ction. showing :1 modified onrl proicrred form of tongs constructr-il and arranged in :m-onlunco with this invimtion. In assemblingthe parts of the tongs of 1. 2 and 3 the jaws and 3 are pivoted together by means of the pivot pin 13 extending through the holes in the reins 4: and

In using my improved tongs shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the jaws are opened by means of the reins at and 5, suflicicntly to admit the crucible. The jaws-2 and 3 are then closed and the keeper 8 is then positioned on the reins 'l and to fasten the jaws 2 and 3 in closed position around the crucible, the stops 9 then being in engagement so as to prevent crushing pressure on the crucible 12.- lhe curved. lingers l0 and 11 on the jaws of the tongs loosely engage with the curved surface of the heated crucible to prevent renmval or displacement of the crucible when the aws are in closed position. The crucible hen li't'terl through the medium of the reins and transported on the trolley or crane .lrcrn which the tongs are suspended to the pouring station. The tongs and crucible are i then rotated axially relative to the swivel ise with ring and trunnion rings to tip or tilt the I crucible so as to pour the molten metal t'mm the crucible, the handle 7 forming a convenient means for this turning movement. After the crucible is emptied the tongs are employed to move the empty crucible to the place of i: .osal, and when disenfrom. the crucible the tongs are in readine s to repeat it ie above described 0peraticns.
in handling crucibles with tongs constructed as shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7, 10 the. operations will be as has just been described.
The novantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The provision of thestops on the ends of the jaws of the tongs prevents gripping of the crucibles end the possibility of crushing which would result therefrom. The curved lingers projecting from opposite sides of the in loosely engage with and retain the cruno rihle in place while preventing removal or dislodginent thereofwhile the tongs jaws are closed. By having the jaws of the tongs and the rear end of the reins extending lengthwise parallel in different planes the liability of overturning the crucibles is lessened and prevented. The novel means for suspending the crucible tongs permits;
lifting of the crucible by the tongs and the turning movement of the cruciblexneces- 3 sary in pourin The ap ar'atus is simple and avoids the necessity 0 frequent'repans. Modifications in the construction 'and an rangemcnt of the parts may be made without departing from my invention as'defined in the appended claims.
