SOUND-PROOF CASE FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 22. 1914.
Application flied January 27, 1914. Serial No. 814,797.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENZO Loiiimnoi CERRI, a sub'ect of the King of Italy, and residing at iazza Torlonia, Palazzo prorio, Avezzano, Province of Aquila,'Italy, have invented certain new and usefn'i Improvements in Sound-Proof Cases for Type Writin Machines, of which the fOllOWIIIg IS a speci cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
M invention relates to a device to be aplied to typewriting machines of any kind, for the purpose of deadening the noise thereof when they are operated upon.
According to my invention, the typewriting machine is inclosed within a case wedded with felt or other sound-deadening material, its key-board portion only remainin outside the case, and means are pro vided for rendering the machine visible and for returning the carriage carrying the platen of the machine, from the outside of the case, also for ermitting an easy access to the machine and of its being readily taken out of, and placed into, the case.
With these objects in view, I provide the suitably shaped and conveniently sized case with a glass shutter arranged to be readily o ened and being preferably cylindrical in s ape, and I fasten this shutter to two oppositely disposed counterwei hted rock ng members respectively arrange near one side wall of the case, so that the shutter may be easily moved and friction is avoided. I return the carriage carryin the platen of the machine from the outsi e of the case by means of a train of levers, of which the first one acts on the return mechanism and the last one is disposed outside the case so as to project heyond'the front edge thereof.
In order that my invention be readily understood, the samc'will here be described, by way of example, in one of its constructional forms, reference being had to the annexed drawings. in which- Figure 1 is a cross section of the case, Fig. 2 a front elevation thereof, partly in serlion. and Fig. 3 a plan view, partly in section.
The sound-proof case according to the invention comprises a case or box 1, whose bottom J has a nojecting front portion for supporting the key-board part of the innchinc. this projecting front portion extending slightly beyond the front part 3 of the frame of the machine, as it is shown in Fig.
wood, provided with a counterweight 9, and
to these disks is fastened a cylindrically bent glass plate 10 adapted to close the opening between the parts} and 5, and connecting the two disks. This glass shutter ma be opened and closed by rotating it aroun the journals of the disks 8 by means of a fingerpiece 11. In this way, and through the arrangement of parts here provided, the glass shutter may not only be easily rotated, but
may also be made to remain in any desired position, whether this be the open, the closed or an intermediate position. The box is wadded inside with pieces 12 of felt or other sound-deadening material, and also the disks 8 and the projecting portion of the bottom 2 are lined with the same material.
In order to return the carriage of themachine from the outside of the case, there is provided the following device. A vertically disposed shaft 13 turning in bearings, such as 14, arranged within the case, has fastened to it a horizontal lever 15 which is shaped so as to engage the pawl 16 provided in type-writing machines for returning the carriage carrying the platen. The lever 15 ends in a fork 17 in order to engage the said pawl. The shaft 13 passes through the bottom of the case to the outside thereof and has fastened to its projecting end a lever 18 which extends beyond the projecting front portion of the bottom 2 and ends in a'handle 19.
The pawl 16 carried by the carriage of the type-writing machine and engsiged by the fork 17. displaces the lever 15 when the carriage is successively fed from right to left during the operation of the machine, so that the=shaft 13 is rotated and the lever 18 displaced. In order to return the carriage, it is sullh cnt to operate the handle 19 in the sumo w nner as the pawl 16 would be operated in a machine not inclosed within the silencing case. g
The manner in which the fork 7 and the pawl 16 are connected permits of the ma chine being easily taken out of the case, without any special manipulations being required.
What I claini is:
-1. In a sound proof case for typewriting machines, the combination of, a box wedded with sound deadening material and adapted toinclose the machine except the key-board portion thereof; means for rendering the machine accessible and for removing it and replacing it; and means manipulated from the outside of the case for returning the I carriage of the machine.
:2. In a sound proof case for typewriting machines, the combination of a box; and :1 shutter therefor comprising two oppositely disposed counter weighted disks rotatably mounted in the side walls of the case, and a cylindrieally bent glass plate fastened to said disks.
3. In a sound proof case for typewriting machines, the combination of, a box; a vertical shaft passing to the outside of the box; a forked lever on said shaft and adapted to engage the pawl of the typewriting machine; and a handle mounted on the projecting portion of said shaft? In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses the 7th day of January 1914.
