ADJUSTABLE STRIKE-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedSept. 22, 1914.
Application filed .Tune 8, 1914. Serial 110,843,826.
To all whom it may ooncemi 1 Be it known that we,Fn'RnINANnZ1oANEx West Toledo, in the county of Lucas State of Ohio, have invented certain new'and useful. Improve- Strike-Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates tonew and useful improvements in strike plates for connection to door, frames, to receive thebolts of latches connected to swingingdoors.
An object vof this invention is the provision of a strike plate which is adjustable, so
as to compensate for the space between the frame of the door a'ndthe outer edge of the door, whereby the strlke plate may be ing, the numeral 1 plate of ourinventlon,
'Figur.e'1' is a front our 1I1V6I1t1011; Flg. 2 1s a side elevational an opening 3 to receive adjusted to receive therbolt of the latch so thatthe door. will be securely held when in lclosedposition. r A further object of this invention is the provision of a strike platewhich is provided with an adjustable latch receiving member, the latch receiving member comprising a base plate which is provided on opposite sides with outwardly extending flanges, the flanges projecting through an opening in the strike plate, means being provided to adjust the latch the flanges may be moved the strike 'plate. j
With these and other objects in view, our invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which, f
elevational view of view thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3- 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig.4 isa perspective view of the adjustable member mounted within the strike plate.
Referring more particularly to the drawdesignates the strike which is provided receiving slot 2 and the latch. A plate 4: is disposed rearwardly in "the strike plate, the
with the usual tumbler of the opening 8 plate 4; having forreceiving member so that wardly extending end w'alls 5 at its upper and lower edges which are connected to the upper and lower edges of the opening 3 in the strike plate, the plate abeing of slightly less width than the width of the opening 3. A latch receiving cup is provided, the cup comprising a base wall 6 and side walls 7 pro ecting from the opposite side edges of the base wall, the side walls engaging the opposite side edges of the plate 4 and proecting forwardly through the opening 3 in the strike plate. l
The base wall 6 of the cup is provided with a'central opening 8 therethrough, and disposed through the opening is a screw 9, the inner end of which is swivelly engaged in the plate l. Threadably mounted upon the screw and disposed between the head thereof and the outer face of the base 6, 1s a nut 10, and it will be seen that when the screw is turned to move the nut outwardly upon the screw, the nut engaging the base of the cup moves the same outwardly so that the outer edges of the walls 7 of the cup are advanced beyond the outer face of the strikeplate 1. To prevent the nut 10 from turningwhen the bolt 9 is rotated, a loop 11 is formed on the base 6 of the cup to extend over the nut. Laterally directed flanges 12 are formed on the upper and lower'edges of the base 6 of the cup, the flanges being formed with outwardly extending lugs 13 and similar lugs 14 are formed on the inner face of the strike plate 1, the lugs 13' and 14k receiving the opposite ends of expansion helical springs 15 by means of which the cup is normally held in its innermost position. The forward extremity of one of the walls 7 of the cup is provided with a laterally projected flange 16, theouter face of which is beveled, the extremity of the flange 16 being directed rearwardly as at 17, through a slot 18 in the strike plate, the beveled flange 16 serving as a guide tomove the latch inwardly so that the same may readily drop into the cup to hold the door in closed position; The portion 16 also serves asa stop to limit the inward movement of the cup in the strike plate so that the forward edges of the side walls of the cup always project outwardly of the forward face of the Strike plate.
- dispose the In the practical use of our device, the strike plate carrying the cup is lnserted 1n the facing in the direction of the door when in open position so that when the door is closed, the latch will ride over the beveled portion 16 and drop into the cup to hold the door in its closed position. Should the strike plate be connected to a door frame in which the inner edge of the door when closed is spaced from the frame to such a degree that the latch carried by the door will not engage the strikeplate, the screw 9 1 nay, be rotated to advance the nut 10 forwardly on the screw which moves the cup forwardly, whereby to dispose the outer edges of the side walls 7 ofthe cup forwardly of the outer face of the' strike plate to the desired distance, so that the latch will strike the beveled portion 16 and drop into the cup. It will be seen that the springs 15 normally maintain the cup in its innermost position against the nut 10, so that whenthe latch strikes thebeveled portion,l6, the cup will not be caused to rebound from the nut, owing to the jar interposed upon thecnp.
Having thus fully described our Invention, what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device ofthe class described comprising a strike plate having a latch receiving opening therein, a latch receivlng cup carriedby the strike plate, said cup comprising a base wall, and a a side walls projecting through the opening in the strike plate, a screw carried by the strike plate and pro ecting loosely through the base wall of the cup, anut mounted on the f inner end of said screw for engagement against the inner face of'the base wall of the cup, means for preventing rotation of said not with relation to the screw, whereby upon rotation of thescrewthe cup be moved to dispose the free edges of its side walls. at any desired distance outwardly of the strike:
plate, and means for normally holding the cup in its innermost, position with the. base wall thereof engaged against saidnut.
