In operation: When the rolling mill attendant observesV the slightest formation of scale on the surfaces of the rolls, he Vbears downwardly upon the levers 14 and 14', and in so doingrotates `the grinding bars in a directionopposed to the direction of rotation of the rolls, thus bringing the carborundum strips 9 into engagement with `the roll surfaces. In forcing the leversl down, the locking pawls 16 and 16l drop into locking` engagement with the teeth o-f the -ratchets 13 and 13and holdtlie lgrinding bars in engagement with the rolls.: When thehscale has been removed, the grinding bars are moved awaypfrom theroll surfaces, by `releasing the locking pawls 16 vand 16', by `means of the handles A16a and 16h. i The above describedoperation of removing scale iscarried on from time to time, as soon as the operator observes any scale formation,
