RANDALL.
Dr J S &
mm a m w W ZQIEr/i To allwhomeit mayicoiecewmi UNITED wnnnme'ron RANDALL, on minimises, wnsi iinefronp f -mnrrrixio i'oneslfT Be it known that I, WELL NoTo NiR nnenL, a citizen of the United ,States, residing; at Marysville, in the county ;of SnOhOmish and State of WVashington, have invented'certain new and ujseful lmprovenients in Lifting- "longs; andI do, hereby declare the follow,
ing to be a full, clear, and exact description f of the invention such as will enable others i 1 make and use the same. i i
skilled in 'the art to which it appertains to My invention is directed to i iniprovements in lifting tongs and its primary 'objectii's the provision of a device of. this character where s, n the initial upward or l ftingf movement thereoftwill bring about an 'automatic ,closing of theyjaws-uponthe object toiwbe hoisted.
provision of-a lifting tongs ,whi'ch shagllbe simple, durable; and 1efficient,;,which shall be i easy andpositive' ofoperationyand iwhich v Imay lee-manufacturedandvsold; at afcomparatively low costg j With the above and other objects ini view,
A further object of the invention is vthe the invention consists of the. construction,
combinati0n and arrangement ofparts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and Q illustrated the accompanying drawings,
w e n 1 5% lifting tongs constructed in accordance. with 'my invention. 1, Fig 1s a sectional v ew taken on the vertical'plane indicated by the line 2, 2 of, Fig; 1,5lo1o'kingi1i thegdirection indicated by the1arrow.;-'Fig; sis a viewin side ,elev'ation of a-Lmodified'form of the liftj ingtongs. FigAis af sectional view taken on ajplane extending centrally and ve'rtically through the modified form. Fig. 5'is a sectional view takenon the vertical plane indicated by theline fi ,5fof Fig.3, looking the direction indicated by the arrow. vFig.6,
is a sectional view taken ;on the horizontal plane'indicated by the line 66 of Fig. 3,
looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates the body-of my improved hoistingtongs, the, same being of hollow cylindrical formation. At its lower end the body 1 is bentinwardly and, formed to provide a depending pair of pivot 1u'gs'2.
A pair of jaws 3 is pivotedltoand between the lugs 2 by means of abolt 4. Each jaw 3 is curved and terminates at its lower end 1 Figure 1 1s a view in kside elevation of a" of Letters i i in a grip ping point and provided at its upper endwitha; straight arm 7 The arms smirnnr OFFICE- ,7 crosseachother and theiriupper free ends are located above thepivot' iand disposed v on opposite," sides of; the body, =1. 1A member orsleeve Sis slidably mounted upon the body 1 and isprovided at,;diame trically opposite points withgpairs of pivot lugs ,9; i A pair of links or'connecting rods 10 is l pivotally securedf at their lower ends .to the upper ends off-he arms 7, as at ll. upper ends of the links 10 are secured to and The between the lugs 9 by, pivots 12. As the sleeve 8' is slidably mountediupon the body 1 and owing to its connection, with the arms 7, the downward 'movement thereof will 3 open lEhQrjEtWSfWhllQ an upward movement thereof Will -close the jaws. The upper end i of thQfb Qdy 1 has threadedly" secured thereto a cap 13 providedfwith an eye 14;.
i the downward movement of the tongs, cables 15 prov e ,T j a sglfi p i aw wardly throughopenings 16in the cap 13,,
then under pulleys 17 'and then areattached as at 19, at a point below the sleeve Sand the .1 l" I To permit bllQgJfLWS 3; tobe; opened from the hoisting engine during orat the end of to hooks 18. The pulleys 1:7 am journaled,
' books 18 are carried byj ,and depend'from the sleeve 8., ltoshould-beflapparent that by holding the ,clables15 against movement during the downward movementiof the tongs, the sleeve 8 will beypulled downwardly upon the body 1, resulting-yin the jaws?) beingmovedint'o and heldfin opened position.
To permit the closing of the aws-,3 from the hoisting, engine, I provide cables 20 which pass underpulleys,21,journaled on,
thex sleeve 8 vBy{; a proper handling of the cables 20, the sleeve 8 may be caused to move p y o -t b dy tmo ng't ews 3, into closed position about the article to'be hoisted. These cables may be used to hoist the tongs and move the article to any point desired.
In its modification, the tongs comprises an elongated, body 1 of rectangular cross sectional configuration. The body 1' is providedvwitha slot 22 extending longitudi .nally thereof and opening at its y sides through the sides of thebody: 1%. fAt its lower end the body 1 is bifurcated to 15150; v vide a pair of depending pivot ylug's23 to h and between which is pivoted a jaw 24 and a pair of jaws Q24. The jaws 24 and '24:
are piy'o'ted to the lugs through me dium of a bolt 25. The ja-Ws 24: ureerranged in relativelyspaced relation to receive between them theja'W 24. The jaws are curved and terminate in their lowerends) upper ends to the lugs 29 and at their lower ends to'the upper-ends of the: arms 27. The- ;conneotion between the block 28 and the r of the former with relzttion to the pivot 25 arms '27 is suchktha't a'downward movement will open the'jawsee and 245* andfsu'ch that (an upward movement thereof with relation to the piyot will cl se; the jaws. The block 28 is'provided withfianges 30 adapted to engage the sides o ftheQbody 1 30 its to guide the'blook -;in its moi emen'ts on' the body. To permit the jaws 3 to be opened from the hoisting engine during or' at the end of the down-Ward movement of the tongs, v
a 'c'abl'e' 31 is provided-,saicl cable passing downwardly through 'an op'enin' 32in the upperf en'd of the body 1*, end'under apulley 33 journaled in the slot at a point adjacent its lower end. The cable: 31 is then attached to the underside of the block 28, yus at '34,
