To all whom t may concern Be it known that we, Grro LEONARD RAABE, a citizen of the United States of America, and'ARTHUR TERREY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, both residing at Hayes, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented new and useful Imis customary with this type of printing machine to provide a single reel of paper rotatably mounted in a wheeled trolley o'r carriage which is adapted to be moved to and from its position between or under the printin mechanism of the machine so that when tr e reel of aper becomes exhausted, the carriage can e' withdrawn and after having been provided with afresh reel can be reintroduced into the machine. These operations not only involve heavyl manual labor but occupy a good deal of time during which the printing machine remains idle.
The chief objects ofour invention are to provide in connection with printing mechanism of this type a full spare reel in such a position thatit may, be quickly attached to the end of the paper severed from the exhausted reel, so that the press works in a practically continuous manner and to provide means to avoid the heavy manual labor above stated. v
According to our invention we provide each printing section of the machine with two reel carriages which are adapted to be withdrawn and replaced alternately along suitable guides or lrails lso that while the reel of` one carriage is supplying 'paper to the machine the other carriage can be withdrawn to'ieceive a new reel and replaced ready for use 'when the other reel becomes exhausted, without interrupting the working of the machine.-
The movement of thereelcarriage to and' from themachine and the `lifting ofthe reels to and from the withdrawn carriages, are performed by mechanicalineans preferably operated hydraulically or pneumatical-ly. The actuation of the usualtension brakes and the usual side adjustment mechanism is also preferably efected by mechanical means which may also be operated hydraulically or inv any other suitable manner.
The machine is also preferably so constructed and arranged that the various operations above stated can be eil'ected from the floor level at the base of'thev machine, that is to say without requiring deep pits to be formed beneath the machine for the accommodation of the reel carriage and the parts coperating therewith.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, the same will be described, more fully with reference to the accompanying draw-l printing machine showing the working position of the various paper reels and their carriages relatively to the printing sections of the machine. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are general views showing one example of the means employed for moving the reel-carriages to and from the machine, and lifting the reels to and from the withdrawn carriage; Fig. Qbeing a sectional front elevation; Fig'. 3

The said reel carriages are each provided with flanged or groovedwheels b adapted to run along the said rails C C which are situated slightly below the level of the floor G. l
In the exampleshown we effect the movement of the carriages to and from the printing machine by hydraulic power for which purpose the said carriages are provided with. hydraulic cylinders b, the rams b2 of which are rigidly supported at their outer ends so that they are stationary and the cylinders slide thereon in moving the carriages, suitable valves hereinafter described being provided to control the flow of the motive Huid to and from the cylinders. The reels D are furnished with spindles al adapted to be supported in recesses or bearings formed in standards or supports B in which the reels are free to revolve. The said standards have lateral projections b3 (Fig. 5) along which the said spindles can be rolled in moving the reels to and from their bearings during the transference of the .said reels from the lifts E to the carriages, or from the carriagel to the said lifts. These lifts are in the example shown operated hydraulically for which purpose each. lift comprises a pair of vertically arranged rams -e having a horizontal platform .at their upper ends and working in cylinders e which are provided with suitable valves as hereinafter described for controlling the 'rise and fall of the platform. When in the lowered position the platform lies Hush with the iloor G.
For the purpose of controlling the carriages hydraulically, each of the cylinders is provided with a valve K, which, in the example shown by Figs. 7 and 8, is of the rotary kind comprising a cylindrical casing having in its periphery an exhaust port 7c and two pressure ports 102, k3 connected to the lopposite ends of the cylinder b by the pipes h4, 71:4* (Fig. 7). Within the said valve casing is an angularly displaceable ,valve member K having in it a hollow central passage Irs to which the motive iuid is led by suitable pipes, and having also a radial passage 7c adapted to communicate with either of the pressure ports k2, 7c in accordance with the position of lthe valve member K the arrangement of the pressure ports and the exhaust port being such that when the said radial passage la@ communicates with one of the pressure-ports theother is .in communication with the exhaust port. In order that the movement of the carriage may control the said valve, the aforesaid valve member is providedwith a boss extending through the casing and carrying anl arm la7 adapted to cooperate with two 'stops H H carrled on a longitudinally displace' able rod H2 connected to a suitable hand lever H3 situated at a convenient part of the machine so that the said rod canl be actuated at will to the extent limitedby the collars H* Hs fixed thereon.
As shown in Fig. 7, the reel carriage is about to leave the printing machine and move outward toward the right in the direction of the arrow. To effect this,` the hand lever H3 is moved toward4 the right as shown by the full lines wherebythe rod 2 is shifted in a 'direction tol cause the stop H to move the valve arm k7 into the position 2'indicated in Fig. 8 so that the passage las in the valve member K com- -munica'tes with the pressure port las and places the other port Ici to exhaust,thereby lallowing the motive fluid to iiow through the pipe 7a4* into the right hand end of the cylinder and causing the said cylinder together with the carriage :to be' moved to the right. As the carriage approaches the termination of this movement, the valve arm comes into contact with the stop H which is rendered stationary in this direction by fthe collar Hi bearing against its abutment H6, with the result that the arm 767 is moved into the vertical position shown by the full lines in Fig. 8 thereby placin the valve member in a position to cut o thesmotive fluid and bring the carriage to rest.
When it is required to return the carriage to the printing machine, the hand lever H3 is moved'over tol the extreme left causing the shaft H2 and the stopH to be moved also to the leftand the collar H5 to abut against the end wall of the recess in which the rails C are situated, with the result that the valve arm is moved into the 'position 3 indicated in Fig. 8. The passage 7c in the valve member K then communicates with the pressure` port 7a2, with the port 7c3` in position to exhaust, thereby allowing the motive fluid to liow lthrough the pipe la* into the left hand end of the cylinder b and causing the said cylinder together with the carriage to be returned to the printing machine. rest by the valve arm la7 coming 1nto contact with the stop H which is rendered stationary in this direction by reason of the collar H5 bearing against its abutment. The fluid under pressure vissupplied through a pipe Z3 communicating with the central opening in the movable valve member whose radial passage can be brought by a proper manipulation of the hand lever 24, into register with theport communicating with the pipes Z,| Z when it is desired to elevate the lifts for raising the platform E; When the said platform E is to be lowered, the valve member is moved by the lever Z* into a position in which the port communicating with the pipes'Z Z leading to the lift cylinders communicates with the exhaust pipe Z2 so that the lifts descend under the action of gravity.
Carried on the inner side frame a of the printing machine are the usual tension brake pulleys F (Figs. 5 and 6) which are so positioned as to lie opposite the said spindles d of the reels to engage therewith when the latter are in position in the machine, the said brake pulleys being formed with cylindrical extensions f which are mounted in bushes f in the side .frame a and held rotatably therein by a collar f2 secured to the free end of the cylindrical extension where it projects through the frame. The .brake pulleys thus remain. in the frame of the printing machine when the carriages are removed. The inner ends of the spindles d are of rectangular shape in cross section to t into correspondingly shaped axial holes in the brake pulleys when the carriages are in place in the machine, whereby the said spindles and their reels revolve together with the brake pulleys.
The brake pulleys are each provided with a brake shoe in the form of a divided, woodlined metal band f4 attached to the machine frame by bolts f5 and extending around the periphery of the brake pulleys F. Each brake shoe is under the`control of a small hydraulic or compressed air cylinder .ff the piston of which operates through suitable mechanism comprising a bell crank lever f7, to exert the necessary degree of pressure upon the brake pulley for obtaining the required tension on the paper supplied to the printing machine from thereel.
For the purpose of locking the carriages in position in the machine each carriage is provided'with a pivoted latch lever b* (Fig. 6) adapted to slide up the incline-d or conical surface of a projection or head a2 mounted in the machine frame a. tion to be rolled along the lateral theadj acent ends of the reels) the said conical head a2 is provided with a screw threaded body or stem a4 which engages a correspondingly threaded sleeve carried by the machine frame, means whereby it can be conveniently rotated as for example by a sprocket wheel a5 operated by an endless chain carried by another sprocket wheel situated at some convenient point on .the machine. On rotating these sprocket wheels by suitable means, the said projection or head a? .will 'be caused to project to a greater or lesser extent from the machine frame. To liberate thecarriage prior to its withdrawal from the machine, a toe piecev f8 forming part of a rod fg is adapted to lie under the free end of each latch lever, so that by lifting the rod, the toe piece'will lift the latch lever and disengage the latter so that the carriage is then free to be withdrawn. The said rod f is shown as forming part of the plunger or piston of the aforesaid brake operating cylnder f6, so that the releasing of the carriage can be performed mechanically and simultaneously with lthe release of the tension When a fresh reel is being placed in position its spindle engages with the brake pulley before the latch lever b4 comes into engagement with the recess a3. The rod fg may then be permittedl to vdescend thereby applying the tension brake without ill effect and at the same time enabling its toe piece f8 to come under the latch lever b4 ready for the next releasing operation.
VVh-en one of the reels is becoming exhausted, its web of paper is severed from its adjacent machine section and the web of the contiguous reel is connected by gluin 'or other suitable means to the severed end of the paper in the machine section and the machine is slowly started until the said `)omed end has passed into the machine section the new reel being meanwhile assisted to revolve by the operator so as to relieve the connection of the old web with the paper on the new reel from undue strain. The carriage of the exhausted reel is then disconnected from the machine frame by the liberation of the latch lever b4, and the said carriage withdrawn by means of the hy- .draulic cylinder and ram b, b2 to the reloading point as already explained (see Figs. 3 and 4). The paper reel lift is then raised into a suitable position to receive the exhausted reel which is rolled out of the said carriage on to the table or platform E of the lift.
