' Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationflled May in, 1914. Serial No. 839.783.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be'it known that I, LoUIs CYWAR, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary,.
residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life- Preservers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in life preservers.
An object of the invention isto provide a life preserver that may be easily and quickly attached to the body of the wearerand will,
with surety, hold the head and shoulders above the water. I A further object of the invention is to rovide a lifepreserver employing abody ar-" ness, adapted to detachably support alplurality of tanks from which the air hasibeen exhausted.
My invention also contemplates the use of inflated rubber bags in lieu of the tanks before mentioned. 3
With the above and other objects in view that'will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combinatiomand arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawing which shows the preferred embodiment of my invention and to which reference is had herein 1 by like characters designating corresponding parts :Figure 1 1s a perspective view of the life preserver, and, Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a portion of an inflated bag, constituting a modification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide-a life preserver employing a body harness which may be easily and quickly secured to the body of the wearer, and with this object inview, I provide a pair of transversely-arranged body straps 5 and 6 spaced one above the other and having a suitablev buckle connection 7 at the ends. thereof. Shoulder straps 8 are provided and are se: cured at the rear ends to the transversestrap 6 at the point 9,.the forward ends of the shoulder Straps 8 being suitably apertured for engagement withthe buckle 10j secured ad acent the ends of the strap 6., In position on the body, the upper strap 6.is arranged to lie beneath the arms with the lower stra 5a suitable distance beneath the same, ,wi the meeting ends of the several straps before Patented Sept. 22, 1914.
.55. mentmned secured in a well-known mannen.
The harness above described is adapted to detachably support a plurality of tanks for other receptacles 11 0 but referably of a contour as disclosed the rawing. These tanks or receptacles 11 may be made of any suitable material such as aluminum or gther 'material light in w'e1 ht, and it is my object to exhaust the air rom these tanks to enhance the buoyancy thereof. The lower ends of the tanks 11 are provided with stoppers or plugs 12 which ny suitable shape, I y
may be removed to permit the tanks to be drained of" water should the same become broken or otherwise injured.
The tanks 11 are provided with s taples 11 adapted to be received on the straps 5 and 6 and to move freely thereover, the sta lea-11' forming the-connection between the arness and the tanks.
A modification of the tank 11 as in Fig. 2 consists of the rubber bag 13 provided with the valve 14 by which the same-maybe inflated; Any suitable fa-steniigi m'ansmayf 1 same may bevsecured to the straps 5 and 6 1 be carried bythe rubber bag which the a manner similar to the sta les 11" It dsbelievedthat froin te foregoing description of'the apparatus -"the operation have shown and" describe thedpreferrQdemthereof willbe readily ap arenaand while I bodiment of my. invention, confine myself to the exact-detail struction shown, as various-forms; tions and arrangement ofthe parts may be ha'dwithout departing from the" spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. 1
What I claim as new is In a life preserven-a body harness, said' body harness comp'm's'in a] air of trap s verse straps roviaeawma 'etachableiconi n'ections 'at straps permanently connected at their-"rear eir ends, a pair of shoulder! ends to the upper strap and detachably-cbw nested at their forward ends to and. upper strap, and buoyant tanks each provlded 011 Its 1111161 slde wlth vertlcally-almect staples In testimony whereuf 1 MR1; my signature 111 presence of two WItHQL'SES.
