This pipe 7 has atWofold function y of conveying carbid to the "spacebetween the bottom 4: and thepa rtition 5 and of conducting the gas generated in said space to the house connection or serv- 93 P P a As clearly shown in the drawings, the bell'2 is of cylindrical contour and is provided with a solid top 8, while its lower end is entirely open as is common with devices of this character. The top 8 ofthe bell is provided with a central opening 9 within which a sleeve 10 is rigidly secured, said sleeve surrounding the pipe 7 and having its lower end flared outwardly as at 11. Thus it will beseenthat thepipe acts also as in its ascent and a guide for thebe ll 2 descent. The top 8 of the bell 2 is also provided with an eccentric opening 12 from whicha small cylinder 13 rises, said cylin der'being closedat its upper end and provided with a suitable Ioopor eye 14:, the function of which will hereinafter appear.
In addition to the hereinbefore set forth uses of the pipe Tyit also forms a rigid supportfor the carbid hopper 3., Said hopper comprises a funnel shaped lowerjend 15 which is in communication withfthe interior of the pipe 7 and is provided with an upright, wall 16 at its upper edge. The
upper edge of the wall 16 is provided with a cover 17, the latter having a threaded filling opening 18 which'is normally'closed by a screw cap'19. Vithin the hopperB and disposed in vertical alinement with the pipe -7, is a substantially cylindrical guide 20 which,"as shown, is'c'losed at itsupper end while itslower end is entirely open and is spaced from the junction of the'lower end 15 of the hopper 3, with theZpipeTI. sitlon' in any suitable manner, a sleeve 21,
leading from said guide 20 through thle wall 16, usually answering this purpose. The
outer end of the sleeve 21 is externally threaded and engaged with internal threads in a boss 22,formed on the outer side of the wall '16, said outer end of the tubebeing provided with anannular'collar 21 which contacts with the inner side of said wall. As clearly seen in Fig. 3, the boss 22 receives, in its outer end, a packing nut 22 between whichiand the'adjacentend of the tube, 21;a
packingring is located,the adjacent ends of said tube and said nut being countersunk to force said packing ring into engagement with a shaft 23 which is located in said tube and is provided on its-inner and outer ends with crank arms,2at and respectively, said arms pro ect1ng in opposite dlrectlons from said shaft. The crank arm 24 is loosely connected, through the instrumentality of a plurality of links 26, to the upper endof a weighted valve 27, said valve being coneshaped at its lower end as shown at 28, said As seen in Fig. 3, the guide 20 is formed with a laterally extending boss 20 through which the inner end of the tube 21 prOJects into the interior of said guide, a nut 20 being threaded on said inner end thus clamping the boss 20 securely between said nut and a second annular collar 21 which is formed on the inner end portion of the sleeve 21. By this arrangement of parts, it will be seen that the guide 20 is rigidly supported within the hopper and that the outer end of the tube 2l acts asvone member ofa stuffing box.
hen the valve 27 is seated, the crank arm 25 will extend upwardly at substantially an angle of 45 and the gas hell 2 will be supported by the pressure of the generated gas as will be hereinafter described. As the gas is exhausted from the interior of the bell, and said bell gradually descends, it becomes expedient to provide means for automatically raising the valve 27, thereby allowing the, fresh 7, charge of carbid to descend through thepipe 7 and into the generating chamber between thebottom 4: of the tank I, and the partition 5 therein. For this purpose I employa chain 29 or other suitable connection, between the outer end of the arm 25, and the loop or eye 14. Thus it will readily be seen, that when the bell 2 de scends, said chain will pull downwardly upon the arm' 25, this movement rocking the shaft 23 and through the action of the crank arm2l and the links 26, raising the valve 27 to allowa charge of carbid to drop into thejpipe By reference to Fig. 1, it Will beseenthat the only outlet from the generatingfchamber, is the pipe 7 andtherefore allgas' generated in said chamber must neccssarily rise within said pipe. For the purpose of conducting the generated gas from the interior of the pipe 7, to the house connection and to the interior of the bell 2,.I provide a horizontal pipe 30 which extends outwardly fromthe pipe 7 and passes through the upright wall of the tank 1, its outer end being'in communication with a filter 31, the latter having a suitable nipple 32 to which the service pipe is connected. Intermediate its ends, the pipe 30 is'provided with an outwardly opening check valve 33 and with a valve 34: which -.may be employed for. cutting off the flow of gas entirely, or for conducting it to any one of the number of discharge pipes (not shown). An acetylene gasgenerator comprising an upright cylindrical tank having a horizontal partition near its lower end, the cen- 'tral portion of said partition beingbulged upwardly, an upright gas discharge tube rising from said upwardly bulged portion 25 jmunicating with the interionof the gas bell,
