Be it known that I, JEROME Aoonrn Hoos'rox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop-Pins for Coupling-Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in coupling devices and more particularly to air brake hose coupling.
The main object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the usual StO) pin upon the coupling member is replace after the same has been broken ofi' of the cou iling head so as to render the head useful instead of discardin the same.
Another ob'ect of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of eilieiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture, and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described. claimed and pointed out in the accompanyin r drawin s, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom piim of a coupling head, the original retaining pin being shown urtly broken away and illustrated in dotted ines. Fig. 2 is a similar view, parts being shown in section and my improved substitute in arranged in its effective position; and ig. 8 is a detail pers ective view of the )in before being engaged with the coupler head.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated in Fig. 1 a coupling head which is especially adapted for use upon air brake hose, said coupling head being of the usual form and provided with a stop pin 1 which extends transversely between the main body of the coupling head, and the arm 2. It i a well known fact that after the stop pins 1 become broken, it renders the coupling head useless and thus necessitates the discarding of the same. As explained above it is the main object of my invention to replace this stop pin by a new one which will render the cou ling head useful and at the same time wil be effective and strong as a new head.
In placing the coupling head in shape for the receiving of the new pin, the arm 2 is ground down upon the outer side as shown at 3 to rovide the outwardly rojeeting ear 4, said car being rovided witi a transverse 0 ening 5 whic is adapted to receive the hue portion 6 formed upon one end of the substitute rod 7 This substitute rod is formed of a material similar to the material of which the coupling head is formed and when in its operative position will be disposed transversely between the arm 2 and the )ody member of the couplin head.
It will be noticed that in Fig. l the inner end of the pin 1 is formed integral with an outwardly projecting boss 8 and after the pin 1 has been broken, an opening 9 is driven through this boss to receive the end of the rod 7 opposite the hook 6. After this end has been inserted throiwh the opening 9 it is bent inwardly U)OI1 the boss as shown at. 10 and as the hook member (3 is bent in a direction opposite the hook 10, the rod 7 will be securely held against any longitudinal movement by means of these hooks. It will be apparent from the foregoin that the rod 7 may be quickly and readiFy enaged with the cou ling head after the openings have been drilled within the ear 5 and the boss 8. It will be noted that the rod when formed will be provided upon one end with a book 6 while the other end thereof is strai ht and in placing the same in posi tion, tie straight end thereof is inserted within the opening 9 of the boss 8 and the hook (l is engaged with the perforated ear 5. After the hook (l and the straight end of the. rod are in their eil'ective positions, the end of the rod is bent inwardly upon the boss as shown at 10. Thus it will be seen that the rod 7 will be securely retained in its 0 )erativc osition as illustrated in Fig. 1. .rom this it will be ap arent that a rent saving is brought about liy replacing the stop pins 1 instead of discarding the COt1)llD"' head after this pin has been broken 0 I n view of the fact that the breakin of this stop pin will render the coupling head useless, the necessity of a new stop pin will be readily apparent.

\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be body of the pin, the other end of said pin extending through the opening in the boss and bent upon the boss to securely retain the pin a ainst movement, said end being bent in a direction opposite to the direction in which the hook extends, so as to securely retain the pin in its effective position.
