WILLIAM LEWIS, 0F UTICA, NEW YORK.

Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 22, 1914,
Application filed December 24, 1810. Serial No. 589,130.
To all :bUltOTiL it may concern:
- Be 1t known that 1, WILLIAM Lewis, of
New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-Bed-Springs; and' I do hereby declare that the to lowing is at .full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the reference-numerals specification.
My invention relates to coil springs adapted for use in bed springs, sofas and similar upholstered articles, reierence being had to April 25,1914, and allowed May 11, 1914.
M construction is an improvement and modification of the class of such springs gen- The general object of my invention is to proiiide such a spring of improved form and construction which. will combine the neces resiliency for ease and strengthto resist undue compression. .With the construction I use to obtain these results, I also am able to make certain novel detail construc-v tifons which will more fully appear herea ter. 1
bodymg my general construction. Fig. 2 Fig. 3 is a a ed spring embodying one form of my inview lengthwise of the head end of a bed The coils of my spring are preferably formed of a single piece of suitable spring sections. The two outer or end'sections 5 the 'top and bottom sections respectively, are in the form of the well known two-cone spring, that is having the larger convolutions at the top and bottom respectively and necting them,'-I form a central cylindrical section 7 in which the convolutions are of relatively small diameter, preferably of the coils of that row perpendicular sectional view, crosswise of drical section each coil is intersected by upper and lower braces 8 and 9, respectively, extending lengthwise of the bed and intersecting in the same way each coil spring in a given row. The braces are secured to the coils by any suitable means such as a raised offset 10 in the braces 8 and 9, which will fit within .the convolutions 5 and 7 respectively of the coil above the braces and will be held thereimby the convolutions 7 and 6 respectively-below, which are formed so close to the convolutions next above as to' spring there are upper and lower crossbraces 11 and 12 respectively which intersect at the same point as the braces 8 and 9, and thereto as by rivets 13. These cross braces serve to further secure the coils in perpendicular position. Fig. 2 represents a coil which is intersected by both lengthwise and crosswise braces while Fig. 1 represents a coil that has only the lengthwise braces.
As pressure is applied to a spring of this con'structibn the -larger convolutions will be are securely fastened compressed easily and therefore first. As,
further pressure is applied the c'onvolutions midway of the cone sections -5 and 6 will contract and the smallest convolutions which are those in the middle or cylindrical section 7 will-be brought into play last because they are the strongest. In this way the middle section 7 acts aS- a reserve strength in the spring which prevents the spring from'bein-g compressed its total available amount under ordinary strain and .yet does not have the undesirable and uncomfortable hardness of an entirely unyielding stop or limit. By-
forming the spring in this triple-deck form with two layers of braces, I am able to use if desired a coil of greater total height than where only one brace is used. It is not necessary, however, to use a coil of greater height than usual, as the peculiar construction herein described provides a spring of of coils C would be placed at the left of the coils A as well as at the right as now shown. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination in series of coils at the edge two sections,. the upper of which is cone shaped and tapers toward the lower and the lower of which is formed of comparatively small convolutions, coils in the balance of the bed of greater height and composed of three sections, the upper and lowerof which are cone shaped and taper toward a bed spring of e each other, the middle section of which isv of smaller convolutions, braces connecting the upper junction points of said three section coils and the junction points of the two section coils and braces connecting the junction points of and braces connecting the lower junction points of the three section bars depressed between theirends to. en port the higher coils and supporting the said 'two section coils at the raised ends.
2. The combination in a bed spring of a series of coils at the edge of the bed having two sections, the upper of which is cone series of coils at the edge of the tiv ly small convolutions,
shaped and tapers toward the lower and the lower. of which is formed of compareance of the bed of greater height and composed of three sections,
the upper and lower of which are cone shaped and taper toward each other and the middle section of which is'of smaller convolutions, braces connect and the lower of which is formed of comparacoils in the balof the bed, having.
adjacent two section coils,
coils, and cross tively small convolutions, coils in the hail the upper of which is none ance of the bed of greater height, braces connecting the junction points oi? the twosection coils and intermediate points upon. said higher coils and cross bars depressed. between their ends to support the higher coils and supporting the said two-section coils at the raised ends.
a. The combination in a bed series of coils at the edge of the two sections, the upper of which is cone shaped and tapers toward the lower and the lower of which is formed of compare tively small convolutions, coils in the bal ance of the bed of greater height, braces connecting the junction points of the two section coils and intermediate points upon spring of e Feed having said higher coils. braces connecting adjecent intermediate points upon said higher coils and cross bars depressed between their ends to support the higher coils end so. porting the said two-section coils at t e raised ends. n
5'. A triple deck spring for spring beds comprising coaxial end and intermediate sections,'the end sections being coin-eel and tapered toward the intermediate section and the intermediate section of smaller diameter than the larger ends of the conical end sec tions, and separate fleeting brace inter locked with the junctions of the end sections with the intermediate section.
6. A triple deck for heels comprising conical end sections and relintirely smaller intermediate section, convohn tions at the junctions of sections closer together than the renlaining convolu tions and separate floating brace bars inserted between the juxtaposed oonrolutions at the junction of said sections. v
In witness whereof l have aihiied my sig nature, in the presence of two witness, this 17th day of December 1910.
