of which the following isa specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to certain improvements in permutation locks and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein the operation of the lock is under control of rotating tumblers; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a novel and improved construction whereby the same is effectively guarded against manipulation by unauthorized persons and which may be applied with convenience and facility to a door.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my `improved permutation lock, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a permutation lock constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2, on an enlarged scale, of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view in'perspective of a part of the invention as included herein in connection with the lock bolt; Fig. 4 is a view in elevation, detached, of one of the -lnountings for the tumblers contained in the Specification of Letters Patent.

The forward face of the casing is provided with an opening 5 for 'the'projection therethrough of the engaging end of the lock 7. h The lock bolt 7 is provided adjacent its inner extremity with an elongated longitudinally directed slot 26 into which is adapted to project a guiding lug or pin 27 integrally produced upon the adjacent portion of the easing 1, while above such locking bolt 7 and in close proximity thereto the casing 1 is provided' with the lock iiange 28 having produced thereon at a predetermined point a pocket or depression 29, for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
Pivotally connected to the lock bolt 7 adjacent the forward end thereof is a dog 30 having at its free extremity an upstanding lip or flange 31 adapted to coact with the inner end wall of the pocket 29 whereby retracting movement of such lock bolt is prevented. The dog' 30 is also provided with a depending lip or flange 32 adapted to be received within the notches 33 of the rotary tumblers 34 when it is desired to retract thebolt, such notches 33 being of a depth as to permit the dog 30 to fall by gravity a distance suiicient to withdraw the upstanding lip or flange 31 from within the pocket 29, the rotation of the tumblers 34 serving to impart rectilinear movement to the lock bolt 7, the reverse movement of the tumblers serving to adjust the lock bolt into extended position. As herein set forth the notches 33 in the tumblers34 are shaped somewhat in the fashion of a horseshoe so that when rotary movement is imparted thereto to adjust the lock bolt 7 into projected position the depending lip 32 will be caused to ride upon the periphery of such tumblers which are circular in form, and which results inthe upstanding lip or flange 31 of the dog 30 to be adjusted within the pocket 29, whereby it will be readily perceived that the lock bolt 7 is ei'ectually held against retracting movement.
As herein disclosed, the permutation mechanism, of which the tumblers 34 form a part, comprises an elongated element 35 having an angular bore 36 through which is adapted to .project the operating rod or shaft 37 of similar cross section, whereby such element 35 will be caused to rotate upon rotary movement being imparted to such rod or shaft 37. One end portion of the element 35 is provided with a flange 38 having a radially directed arm 39 and such arm 39 adjacent its free extremity is provided with the inwardly directed laterally extending pin or` projection 40 adapted to be directed through one of a series of perforations 41 produced in the marginal portion of a tumbler 34, whereby it will be perceived that such tumbler will be caused to rotate in unison with the element 35, the perforation 41, through which the pin or projection 40 passes, serving to determine the combination whereby the tumblers 34 of the permutation mechanism may be properly manipulated to impart the requisite rectilinear movement to the lockbolt 7. The element 35 loosely projects through the element or sleeve 42 which is maintained against rotary movement throughthe medium of the angular projection 43 extending from the outer end thereof and which is accommodated in a similar opening or aperture 44 produced in the adjacent face or wall of the casing 1, while the periphery of such element or sleeve 42 is stepped, as particularly shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and loosely mounted on each of the sections afforded by such stepped formations are the remainder of the rotary tumblers 34, such tumblers being maintained in proper spaced relation through the medium of the interposed sleeves or washers 45 formed preferably of leather which while maintaining the tumblers 34 in their spaced relation, do not interfere with the requisite rotation thereof. Each of these remaining tumblers 34 is also provided in its marginal portion with suitable openings .or apertures 46, in which is adapted to be seated the pins or projections 47, which projections are adapted to coact in a well known manner to impart the necessary rotary adjustment to the tumblers to bring the notches 33 thereof in proper register to receive the depending lip 32 of the dog 30. As the manner in which the tumblers 34 coact forms no particular feature of my present invention, other than the inclusion of the plurality of marginal apertures adapted to receive the pins or projections 40 and 47 whereby the requisite combination may be varied, a further detail at this time is believed to4 be unnecessary. The opposite extremities of the rod'or shaft 37 4project beyond the sides of the door or closure member A, to which my improved combined lock may be applied, and to such extended portions are operatively connected the manipulating knobs 48 and 49, the knob 49 being disposed to the outer side of the door or closure member A and in order that this particular knob 49 may not be removed to prevent the requisite operation of the` permutation mechanism, I provide the inner face thereof with the inwardly ,directed hub portion 50 which is adapted to extend or project within the door or closure member A, whereby it will be readily perceived that l the retaining or clamping screw 51 thereof is effectually guarded against removal whereby withdrawal of the knob-49 from operative position is prevented. The knob 48 is secured to the rod or shaft 37 through the clamping or locking screw 52, in a conventional manner.
In order to revent ingress within the lockv of dust or otlier foreign substances which might interfere with the effectiveness thereof, I suitably secure to the opposite faces of the door A the escutcheon plates 53- having the openings 54 therein, through which are adapted to project the opposite-extremities 61 of the rod or shaft 37. The openings 54 are surrounded by the annular flanges 55 which overlap the marginal portions of the bases 56 of the knobs 48 and 49. I provide on each ofthe flanges surroundin the bases 56 of the knobs 48 and 49 a suita le indication 57, with which the indications 58 on the outer faces of the base portions 56 are adapted to coact to determine the operation of the combination requisite to properly manipulate the rotary tumblers 34.
' In practice, I nd it of advantage to suitably mount in the casing 1, above the permutation mechanism, a suitable latch bolt mechanism as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but as such latch bolt mechanism forms no part of my invention it isthought that a detailed description thereof is unnecessary.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a permutation lock constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively. inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be applied within a conventional mortisxe and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure. from the principles and. spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and for mation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
. I claim:
A device of the character vdescribed including a casing andl a permutation mechanism arranged therein, said mechanism comprising a rod extended through the casing and projecting beyond opposite sides thereof, a cylindrical element mounted on the' rod Within the casing, a sleeve looselyy mounted on the cylindrical element and provided with means coacting with the casing to hold the sleeve against axial rotation, the periphery of the sleeve being stepped longitudinally, a tumbler mounted on each step of the sleeve, annular members surrounding the sleeve and interposed between the tumblers to maintain said tumblers against undue movement longitudinally of said sleeve but permitting the tnmblers to have independent axial rotation, an arm projecting from the cylindrical element and overlying one of the tumblers, and coacting pins carried by theV tumblers, one of said pins being carried by the arm of the cylindrical member and directed through the adjacent tumbler Whereby said tumbler Will be maintained normally against movement independently of said cylindrical member.
