Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern *Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. HAPPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethlehem, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealmakeand use the Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thls spec fication.
Thls inventlonrelates to looks and more particularly to that class of seal-looks adapted to be applied to the doors of freight cars or the like.
The object of this invention is to provide a seal-lock which shall be so constructed as position by means of a to release the parts to enable the door to be unlocked.
A further object is to provide a seal-lock which shall combine durability, cheapness and strength.

Slidably supported on the beveled walls 7 is a plate 21, which is shorter than the length of the slot 7 as shown in Fig. 2. On the upper surface of the plate 21, at one end is a beveled tions 7 and 7 cam 21*, and near the opposite end of said plate is a beveled opening 23. Between the opening 23 and the beveled cam 21 is a finger operating piece 22 formed with a vertical opening 22.
The section 7 is in the form of a block which fits in the hollow portion 7 The section 7 is cut away at one end at 7 which with the adjacent walls of the section 7 forms a pocket 10, which extends down to the plate 21. In this pocket is a latch block 13, the lower end of which is supported on the plate 21, and is adapted to be operated by the beveled cam 21.
Between the top of the latch block and the top of a depression in the section 7*, is a spring 16, which serves to normally press the latch block down onto the plate 21. The latch block is formed with an opening 14, the upper wall of which is beveled as shown at 15, for a purpose to be described.
Section 7 of the casing is formed with a longitudinal opening 12, and intersecting this opening is a transverse out or seal receiving recess 17. The ends of the section 7 are formed with alinement with clearly in Fig. 2.
A locking pin 28 slides in the openings 12, 7 and 15, to secure the seal in locked position. The pin is provided on one end with a head 24, which bears against a staple 9, formed at its end with an eye, through which said pin passes. The pin is provided with a beveled portion 27, which when the parts are positioned to gaged by the beveled wall 15 of the openingin the latch block, the opening in the latter being of suflicient diameter to allow said block to be m ved up and down in the pocket.
At the smaller end of the beveled portion 27 of the pin is a shoulder 29, which bears against the latch block, when the latter is in locked position, and prevents withdrawal of the pin until the seal is destroyed, as will be described later on.

' der 29 is free, whereupon pin 28 is forced inwardly, until the shoulder 29 is back of the latch block 13, whereupon the spring 16 forces said block down and the beveled wall engages the beveled portion 27 and said pin is locked. When in this position the bottom of the block is on the top of plate 21, adjacent the beveled cam 21 and the seal is effectively locked by the pin.
To remove the seal, the operator simply bends it back and forth several times until it breaks at the weakened point 19*, then the plate 21 is slid to the left. When the plate is neved, the cam 21 engages the bottom of the latch block and raises it until the shoulthe pin 28 can be withdrawn. The slot above the left hand passage is so proportioned that when the the end of the seal in the recess will fall through slot 22 in the finger piece 22. The pin is, for convenience, chained to the casing. What I claim and desire to secure by U. S.
Letters Patent, is:
1. In a seal-lock, the combination of a casing ferrned with a pin receiving opening and a seal recess mtersectmg said opening, a pin operating 1n the opening and engagmg a 1 seal in the recess, means for locking the pin,
and a slide through which the seal passes,
said slide having means for releasing the locking means when the seal is destroyed.
2. In a seal-lock, the combination of a casing provided with a seal engaging pin, a
