WASTE AND LIKE BREAKING on CARDING MACHINE. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept.22, 1914.
A Application filed August 5, 1913. I Serial No. 783,013.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM Ro'rHn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Reichenbach, in Silesia, in the Empire of Germany, manufacturer, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Applicable to Waste and like Breaking or Carding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to waste or other breaking or carding machines for the production of cleaning waste or otherwise for treating waste or like material. In such machines, fiber or material along with dust 1s apt to effect a lodgment upon the vertical walls of the cover, which vertical walls enshroud or mask in the ends of the breaking or carding cylinders; or fiber or material and dust may even lodge on or adhere to the cylinder ends themselves. Such fiber or material becomes compacted upon the vertical walls and the accretion or accumulation continues to grow until the breaking or carding cylinder is jammed or its rotation seriously impeded. In some cases fires have occurred due to such accumulations, while in all cases such deposits retard the revolution of the breaking or carding cylinders and must of necessity be cleared away from time to time. The clearing away of such accretions is not an easy matter and stoppage of the machine entails a loss of production.
According to my invention I arrange to automatically remove or prevent the formation of accumulations on the casing walls, or elsewhere, and I do this by the application of one or more knives or blades or cutting bars which are attached by screws or otherwise to the spiders or ends of the breaking or carding cylinder.
The attached drawing clearly illustrates the invention and, in said drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary section of one form of breaking cylinder, &c., with my blade or cutting bar applied to one end of the cylinder and carried thereby, so that, as the cylinder revolves, the said blade or cutter rotates in close proximity to the vertical wall of the cover or casing, as is clearly shown. Fig. 2 shows an end view of the breaking cylinder with the blade or cutting bar applied, and Fig. 3 shows a plan of the blade or cutting knife in place.
In carrying out my invention, and, in its simplest form, I use a single knife such as the blade or cutting bar a and this has preferably a curved or shaped cutting edge a as Fig. 2 shows. This blade or cutting bar a abuts closely to and is secured to each cylinder end, such as to the cylinder end I) of the cylinder b, or it might be to arms of the end spiders, or otherwise to the end supports of such cylinder. It is seen that the blade or cutting bar a is somewhat 01 similar shape and consequently as it revolves it tends to cut and throw-off severed fiber and such like tangentially. I preferably so mount or carry the blade or cutting baras to be readily removable, and conveniently I fix the same by screws or bolts. It is seen that the blade or cutting bar a has an inclined face a and this face inclines or slopes toward the cylinder end (as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 3) thus giving an eflicient cutting edge. Arrangements may be made for readily adjusting the blade or blades such as a.
The action of the herein described automatic cutting down device is as follows When at work, each blade or cutting bar a sweeps around close to each vertical wall 0 and slashes through, breaks down, dislodges or forces away any deposits or accumulations, and, same are forced or thrown clear ofthe narrow intervening space and pass to the teeth of the breaking or carding cylinder or other appliances, or are otherwise carried forward in the machine. Thus, by my invention, I prevent the formation of serious accumulations of fiber, dust, &c., and keep the machine clear automatically during running of the breaking or carding cylinder. I might in some caseshave a fixed blade or blades suitably supported and arranged to cooperate with the revolving blade carried on the breaking or. carding cylinder. For my purpose strong knives with an actual cutting face or edge must be used to remove the compacted fibers or bundles of thread in a forceful and continuous manner. My invention is in respect of strong knives with cutting faces or edges which cut-up, sever, break down and dislodge accumulations of the indicated kind in the indicated manner.
I declare that what I claim is.
In combination in a waste breaking machine a casing with fixed vertical end walls and closed bearings and in which the material passes forward parallel to the walls of the casing, a spiked breaking cylinder, or 'a-t right anglesto theaxis of the cylin- 10 vertical end Walls to such cylinder revolving der all as described and shown.
