WATER-CLOSET.
To all wiomt may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH W. SHARP, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the .county .of 4Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented;
`.new and useful Improvements in'` Vaten;
Closets, of Which the Afollowing is aspecif-` cation.
The present invention relates to Water closets, and has for its object to providea'.`
l closet in which the lushing rim isinterrupted at the rear of the bowl to forni an` elongated seat opening at the top of the bowl;l in which the properventilation of .the bowl. of the closet ishad by conducting a venting. passage from the bowl at a point between the;` interrupted ends of the iushingfrim in' ag straight line directly'rearward through the closet; in which the venting passage .has a" dani tooiiset overtlowwfrom the bowl intof 'the venting passage andlhas an overflow and' rooni venting opening located in the lower l sideof the venting `.passage beyond the darn to admit .of the escape of the overflowshould the saine pass the dam; in which the venting- )assarfe has a second dam be ond the oven' liow opening to insure the discharge of the `overlmv through said opening and prevent any possibility of fouling the venting iiue.
which is located in the Wall of the building; and to which access cannot readily be hadv for the purpose of cleansing, the second dam]- constituting a shoulder' against which vthe inner end of the connecting pipe between' the venting flue and .the venting passage is secured; land in' which a separate flushing means is provided for the rear Wall of the howlbetweenthe ends of the interrupted' rim and separate from the rim to wash theouter side ofthe upleg of the Siphon passage and back wall of the bowl.
Other objects and advantages of this in,-Y vention will appear from the following de tail. description of the .present embodiment of the invention, the same being shown in the accompanying drawings in Wligich- Figure l is a vertical central sectiontaken through'a -closet constructed in accordance with this invention and showing in side ele-` vation a low down tank connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a top planview of the closet hav-v ing the tank removed. Fig, 3 is a similar view having the'seat'removed and showing in dotted lines the'various ducts leading from' the tank connection. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but on a reduced scale., ot

a slight modification of the closet, wherein the vent duct is omitted. Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the same having the tank and seat removed. l I
Referring to these drawings-,wherein like parts are designated by similar characters of-reference throughoutthe several views,` 10 designates the bowl ofthe closet which. is
of the ordinary Siphon type having the usual. trap" 'and hopper, Siphon passage, and Waste Ypipe connection.- Around the ltop oi" the hopper or bowl of the' closet arranged in the usual manner .the flushing rim 11, the same being of ordinary construe? tion- With the exception thatat the rear ci the-bowl the rim is interrupted as shown te advantage in Figs. 2 and 3 to provide an opening or space 12 constituting an elongation-of theseat opening.. The liushing rim' terminates at the opposite sides of the opening 12, and .the `'opposite .sidesl of the flushing rim are -supplied. withwater through the independent ducts 31 located .in the opposite lsides of the. closet and connecting 7with .the supply passages 2G extending te the flushing inletlll. The front wall 'i5 o i. thiupleg of the siphon passage constitutes in part the rear wall of the bowl 'or hopper,
and is exposed by the provision oil: the-ogen` ing 12. vFor the purpose of iiushing the, frontwalll of the siphon passage a ilushingchaniber 1G is formed in the rear of the Vcloset preferably on ton of the Siphon passage and provided with flushing awnings 1T located iminediatelya-t the top of the Wall 15, Yor the flushingmay he accomplished by the erforat'ions in the. water passages 26. 'll eiiushing chamber 1t,
as shown in dotted lines inl Fig. 3, connects at its opposite ends with the water Apassages 2G, the latter also supplying water 'tothe flushing rim 18 through. the fluctszl.
This peculiar construction of the closet ik; .had for .the purpose of providing a vent passage 18. leading -froni a point near the top 'of the bowl'directly rearward in a straight line andte'rniinating preferably at the rear oi?v the closet in a horn .19'to whifzh is attached the thiInble 2O leading to the usual vent flue inthe wall of the building.
'If desired the thiinble 20'1nay be omitted and the horn 19 finished againsttthe wall 'Zin in which the vent-flue is located. The vent passage 18 -is raised immediately above the top ofthe siphon passage, the top of the .flushing chamber 16 constituting the lower or more water passages 26", the present illus 40 stream of water is adapted toiiow a'rtl'beconnectionv with the present embodimentfof the invention are relatively wide, thesame fof-thev bowl or hopper, the Supply passages 2 6 tapering down 4and opening into posite sides of the jet chamber 27. Each of mediately beyond the ends of vthe flushing horn 19. I. -Ataiabout the pointfof "'me'rgence .of the vent passage 18`into the horn '-19, an
-mayi rear end of the vent passage 18 islocated the inlet "opening '14, the latter having connec- `rup'tly behind'thejdam for the pnrpose of accommodating the inlet 14 and thus -lproof the inner endl of the thimble 20 .which vphragm 32 extending downwardly and transversely within the passage-26 from the inlet 14 to a point near the bottoni of the wall of the vent passage at this point-and also providing a dam-inthe Avent'ipass'age adapted to prevent overtlow 'rointhe'b'owl or hopper into thev ventpassage'lS.
Depending from the'top of the Vcloset inniA rim is an apron 21,* `constituting the rear. wall of the opening 12,- Aand serving as a' guard'. The vent passage 1.8vis carriedy ab'- ately behind theda'nieand opens l.into the;
wallrotthe vent passage and' is adapted; to v permit the-escape'` of 'anyi o'verow 'which pass the dam.4 Immediately above the tion witha tank'pipe 23 leadingfrom a tank 24.1 'I he' ventpassage 18 is dropped abvidin'g a tank connection which lies in the plane ofthe top' of the bowl. The horn 19,
comprising the rear termination ofthe vent passage 18,' is provided' in' its lower side with a'raised "shoulder or dam 25 which is located' rearwardly ofthe o utlet'Y opening 22, the shoulder or 'dam 25 ormingiazisecond dam to insure the 'discharge of-'the overiiow, if any should Zoccur, through 4the"""o]` ening l22 and thus positively prevent'the fouling' 1 of thevent flue in the wall, .and also forming a vstop 'or shoulder determining the position leads from the horn 19 tothe vent iue in'l the wall. The inlet 14 is provided with one.
tration -showing two Vseparate waterpassages although lit i'sto be understood that?v any number found desirable may be used,jl
the'pair of passages shown' leading down at?? the opposite sides of the closet to a jet chamber 27 having in its upper'wall a rela5 tively small jet' opening 2 8, through-whiclia directed upwardly into the uplegjbf. ftl'ie; Siphon passage.
From Figs-1 and 3 of the drawingsit'will. be noted 'that the supply passagesshown-.ih
extending from therear of the closet'tda .oint substantially in line with the rear wall the opthe v`passages 2 6 Ais provided. with. a Vdia'- passage 26, the diI )hragm directing the water from the inlet L4 into the bottom of the.
of the ybowl-to obtain a quiet and muffled faction of the closet by l forcing air contained inthe passages into the bowlunderneath the water normally llying therein. It will also vbe noted that'as the waterpassages 26 are relatively wide they provide for a refill chamber of relativelyv largecapacity, the
vwater Jfrom the passages 26 flowing into the -bowl after its siphonic -action has ceased; Itwill befnoted that inthis structure a bowl vent passage is disclosed which is of a pre- Y 'determined constant size and that the wall 4or thimble branches and also the room venting opening may be ofy variable size.
