I To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1 CHAnLus H. KASCH, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Davenport, the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented new anduseful Impuovements in J ournal -Box Lid's, of which thefollowing is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in journal box lids and particularly to a lid which is automatically held in open or closed position, and which may be readily removed from the box as an entirety.
The invention has for an object the provision of a journal box lid having hinged connection with the box proper and provided with means whereby through the medium of the hinged connection the' .lid is positively held in open or closed position, the formation of the hinged'connection permittin'g convenient separation of the lid from t e box without the use of tools for the purpose.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described-in the following s ecification, reference being had particu ar y to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the journal box showing the improved lid applied thereto and in raised position. 2 is a vertical central section through same. Fig. 3 is a bottom perspective of the lid. Fig. 4 is a broken perspective showing the hinge member of the journal box.
The improved lid 1 is generally of the usual shape and size, being formed with the usual swell 2 which projects beyond one edge of the plate and is provided at one edge with .a depending disk like member 3 centrally from which projects a hinge pintle 4. The opposite end of the pintle is connected by a narrow web 5 and the overlaying edge of the swell, and the side wall of the swell-beneath the web inclines upwardly and forwardly so as to expose practically the full length of the web, as will be plain from the drawings. A holding spring 6 is secured to the under side of the lid being formed at the relatively outer or fixed end with an opening 7 to engage over a pin 8 depending from the lid, the lid in advance of the pin being formed with a cored opening 9 adapted for inserting the spring and fixedly securing the same in position on the lid. The forward or free end of the spring extends between the hinged pintle 4 and the free edge of the swell.
The hinge member on thejournal box proper is secured to therelativelv forward edge of the upper wall thereof, said member being in the form of a projection 10 extending wholly beyond the upper wall of the box and havin the forward surface 11 and the upper sur ace 12 at right angles to each other for cooperation with the spring, as,
will presently appear, The projection 10 is longitudinally cured at 13 to receive the hinge pintle 4 of the lid, and a portion of the upper wall of the projection is cut away leaving projecting fingers 14 forming the rear wall of the opening 13. The projection on its rear edge is formed with a longitudinally extending. opening 15, by spacing the terminals of the fingers 11, the opening 15 being of a size to permit the passage of the web 5 therethrough. One end of the projection is cut away at 16 to include the rear wall, top wall and a portion of the forward wall, the cut away portion providing for the play of the web 5 and the projecting portions beyond the cut away portion formin'g'shoulders 18 to limit the position of the web. i
In applying the cover to the box, the
.spring is forced into contact with the swell,
the web alined with that end of the opening 15 opposite the cut away portion 16 and the hinge pintle 4 moved longitudinally of the opening 13 until the web is disposed in the cut away portion. The pressure upon the spring is then released and the free end thereof rides between the lingers 14, locking the lid against longitudinal separation from the cover. The plafv of the spring on the squared portions of the box hinge projection serves to hold the cover in closed or open position against accidental movement, the spring preventing such normal opening movement of the lid, as will aline the web 5 with the opening 13.
The lid may be readily separated from the box by moving the same upwardly in the opening direction until the web alined with the opening 13, manually bracing upon the projection, said projection being formed with a longitudinal opening and being cut away beyond one of the fingers to form a receiving recess, a lid for the box having a hinge pintle secured at its respective terminals, and a lid and bein otherwise free of connection therewith, t e connection between one end of the pintle and the lid being in the form of a disk of greater diameter than the opening in the projection, the connection at the opposite end of the pintle being in the form of a Web, of a size to pass through the longitudinal opening in the hinge projection, and a spring secured to the lid and having its free end hearing between the pintle and lid.

A journal box having a hinge projection formed thereon, said projection including a fiat forward portion, a flat upper portion at right angles to the forward portion, spaced fingers forming the rear wall of the projection, said projection being formed with a longitudinal opening and being out i away beyond one of the fingers to form a receiving recess, a lid for the box having a hinge pin'tlc secured at. its respective terminals to the lid and being otherwise free of connection therewith, the connection between one end of the pintle and the lid being in the form of a disk of greater diameter than the opening in the projection, the connection at the opposite end of the pintle being in the form of a web, and a spring secured to the lid and having its free end bearing between the pintle and lid, the relatively upper portion of the projection being formed with a longitudinal slot. of a size to permit the passage thercthrough of the web and communicating with the opening in the projection.
