Description

emmene.
JAOOE w. TEUAX, OEi EssEX JUNOTiON, VERMONT.
Letters Patent No. 111,019, dated-January 17, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN -WATERWHEELS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent'aud making .part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Bc it known that I, JACOB W. TRUAX, of' .Essex Junction, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vater-Vheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which Twill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying dran-'ing forming a part ot'. this speciiication.- l This invention relates to new and useful. improvements in imiter-wheels constructed upon the turbine principle, whereby they are rendered more efficient, durable, andsimple, and less expensive than vsuch wheels have hitherto been; and
It consists in the construction, arraiigement, and
combination ot'- partshereinafter Vmore fully described.
' yIn theaccompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a waterwheel constructed according to my invention, the section being on the line x a' of iig. 2. p
Figure 2 is a top or plan view. v Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts..
lA is a fixed cylinder, in which the wheel works.
B is the iange on the upper rim of the cylinder,
C is the shaft to which the water-wheel is firmly fastened by keys or otherwise.
I) is the water-wheel.
E is the stepof the shaft, which is suspended O11 the timbers I,by.1ncans Ot' the rods G, `from the tiange B, as seen in iig. 1.'
H is the cap or coven ofthe wheel, which is attached to the Viiange B by means of a flange, I, as seen. l
Beneath the top-plate of the cap isa recess or chamber, J, in which is placed the annular gate K.
Lhe water is discharged Onto the Wheelthrough orifices in the cap, being governed in its descent by a series ot chutes L.
These chutes terminate at the lower edge of' the Aconical langeM or wallof the chamber/J, and the i gat-e K is so itedand arranged that it is made to close the water-oriiice's as it descends, and thereby govern the iiow of water.
The gate is suspended from the sliding collar N on v rlhe water-wheel D is constructed by iixing curved buckets in a space between a central core 'and a vertical ring or'baud, and does not difier-materially in its construction from turbine wheels now in use. A Thetimbeis I, upon which the step E is supported,
are a simple cross, so that the water, as Vit leavcsfthc wheel, has a free escape.
By the arrangement herein shown the gate K is y balanced by thcpre'ssure upon its snrf'aee,so that it i E is raised and lowered with perfect ease, and the quantity of water from the vpent-stock above is regulatedj] withthe greatest nicet The water is delivered to the wheel in .a continuo ns, l annular sheet, the direction ot' which is governed by I the position of' the chutes. l
T he advantages ot` this inode of construction are I fina-ny, and must be obviousto all who are acquainted with water-wheels.
Having t-hus described my invention, That I clailn-asunew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. lhe relative construction and arrangement, with respectgto cach ot-her, of theiiauged stationary cylinder A B andthe flanged cap H I, as shown and de` I scribed.
2. The arrangement ot' oriticcd, chuted, izmged, and eh'ambered cap H L'J and annular gate K with respect to wheel .1), as and for the purpose specified.
JACOB XV. TRUAX.
Witnesses:
I). J. HUNTER', JOHN MCGEEGOE.
