IAGHINE ELEIENT.
To aZZ who'm, it may conccrn Be it known that we, EMANUEL E. GUIN- oiucir and CrimsrLiN; L. MILLER, Citizens of the United States, residing at Carlock, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Machine Elements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rhis invention relates to machine elements, and it more particularly relates to an improved form of attachable and removable sprocket Wheels.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this Character, which is especially applicable as an element of seed sowers, manure and fertilizer distributers, and such other machines and devices that are designed to be carried by an ordinary wagon or Cart and operated thereby.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sprocket or gear wheel of this character which may be quickly, easily and se- Curely fastened onto a wagon or Cart wheel, in Concentric relation therewith, and removed therefrom, without removing the wagon wheel, and without disuniting any of the elements of the gear wheel. And another object is to provide a gear member of this Character which is simple of construction, strong, 'durable, comparatively inoxpensive and thoroughly practical and efiicient.
In the accompanying drawino's, which supplement this specification, Figure 1 is an eleva-tion view of the device applied to a wagon wheel, the latter being illustrated. in broken lines; Fig. 2 is an end elevation view, partly in section, of the device applied to the spolres of a wagon wheel; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation view; Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevation view of the device from the opposite side of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a view of the device in open position and in the position for placing it on a wagon wheel; Fig. 6 is a fragmental edge view, illustrating one of the joints of the rim sections in det-ail and in open position; Fig. 7 is a fragmental edge view of the hinge joint, as viewed from the inside when in open position; Fig. 8 is a perspective detail view of the hinge connection and joint of the rim sections; and Fig. 9 is a sectional view through the rim section 6 contiguous to one of the hook bolts or clamping members.
In these drawings, in which similar ref- Specfication of Letters Patent.

erence characters correspond with similar parts throughout the several Views, the numeral 5 designates a wagon wheel, onto four spokes of which is secured the main element r body por'tion 6 of the sproclet rim by means of clamps 7. rfhese Clamps may be of any preferred and proper construction; but in the present illustration, the clamps'7 each consists of a pair of hook-bolts 7', a yoke 7a, nuts 7b, and an apertured lug 6', the latter being formed integrally with the body member 6. These four apertured lugs are spaced apart substantially 90 degrees between their Centers, and between two adja- Cent lugs 6' is provided a space sufliciently wide for the aXle of any ordinary wagon to be passed laterally therethrough, and this space is filled by a segmental rim section 8, the ends of which rest upon the shoulders 9 which are formecl by 'the projecting ends of the contiguous lugs6'. Adjacentto one end of the body or C-shaped rim section 6, recesses 10 are provided at opposite sides, to provide seats for the hinge elements or spaced circumferential extensions 8' of the segmental element 8, a pivot 11 extending through said extensions and through an aperture which communicates with the re- Cesses 10, in the body 6. The opposite end of the body 6 is provided with a slot 12, while the contiguous end of the element 8 is provided with a tongue 18 which fits snugly in the slot 12. It will be seen, therefore, that the elements 6 and 8 Combine to form a Complete annular wheel rim, and on this rim may be provided any desired number, pitch, and design of teeth 14.
An apertured lug 15 is secured to the s ction 6, adjacent to one end portion, while a similar lug 15 is provided on the section S, for engagement with a flexible and yieldable element 16, which may consistV of a Chain and a retractile spring, as illustrated, or may Consist of any other proper' and suitable means for drawing and holding the segmental section normally seated firmly in its seat on the shoulders 9. However, it is obvious that the action of the Chain or other member with which this gear wheel engages presses said segment more firmly into its seat.
In applying the device, the segmental section 8 is swung manually on its hinge or pivot 11, against the action of the spring or yieldable element 16, so that the space between the ends of the body 6 may be fiv'e cen'cs each, 'by addressing the "Commissioner of Paten'zs,
