SAFE OR VAULT WALL CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1914-.
Application filed April 3, 1914. Serial No. 829,216.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Mosns MOSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, and CARL Barri-Ls, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe or Vault \Vall Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertaining to the construction of safe and vault walls relates partic ularly to the manner of joining the edges of plates of unmachinable metal such as cast plates of manganese steel.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description. taken in con nection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an exemplifying form of our improved joint be tween the meeting edges of two contiguous wallplates: Fig. 2 a horizontal section thereof in the plane of line a of Figs. 1 and 3: and Fig. 3 a rear elevation of one of the key-blocks with its key,
In the drawings :1, indicates aplate, as of cast manganese steel, whose edge is to be firmly joined to the edge of a second plate: 2, the second plate, whose edge is to be joined to the first plate: 3, the joint of separation between these two plates, the joint being illustrated as rabbeted so that the edge of one plate has a feature overlapping a feature of the contiguous plate: 4, a rib at the joint-edge of plate 2, this rib being, n'eferably, integrally formed with its plate: a similar rib at the joint-edge of plate 1, these two ribs being 011 the inner surface of their plates, or that surface which is to be the inner side of the safe wall, and the ribs being of dovetail cross-section whereby they are narrow er at their portions nearer their plates, the roots of the inner portions of the dovetails, and the outer side extremities of the dovetails being rounded so as to avoid the presence of sharp corners: 6, the outer side extremities of the ribs, these extremities forming the wide portions of the dovetails: 7, the key-blocks having dovetailed recesses formed in their rear surfaces: 8, the inwardly projecting rear portions of the keyblocks: and 9, keys inserted in the dovetailed recesses at one side of the pair of ribs engaged by the key-blocks.
The edges of the plates 1 and 2 can not, if they are of unmachinable metal, such as manganese steel castings, be machined, though they may be ground to such degree of accurate fitting as is required, and the edges of the dovetailed ribs, if the ribs be formed integrally with the plates, may be dressed, by grinding, with a suflicient degree of smoothness and accuracy to properly receive the key-blocks. The two plates to be joined together, having been properly assembled edge to edge, the key-blocks are to be applied to the pair of ribs, with such closeness to each other as to secure the desired rigidity of structure. The keys 9 are then to be driven, thus binding the edges of the two plates firmly together. The keys 9 are to have a tapering fitting between the ribs and the sides of the key-blocks engaged by them so that there is a drawing action upon the ribs as the keys are driven. The inner edges of the ribs abut against each other so that the drawing effect produced by the driving of the keys is met by solid contact of metal at the abutting edges of the ribs. If the oint between the inner edges of the ribs were open while the joint 3'between the inner edges of the plates were closed then the driving of the keys would tend to draw the ribs toward each other and open the outer portions of the joints 3. In some cases the ends of the ribs may be so exposed that the key-blocks may be swung upon them one after the other, but when this is not the case, and indeed in all cases, it is desirable that the distance between the inwardly projecting rear portions 8 of the key-blocks should be greater than the distance between the outer side extremities 6 of the ribs, thus permitting the key-blocks to be applied at any points in the length of the ribs, or even permitting the addition of key blocks between key-blocks already keyed to place.
We claim: i
