meansto permit a person to float in case of ship wreck or othercauses, or for making sclentlfic invest gatlons 111 water.
. The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangementof parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. Y j
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan 'view..- Fig. 4 is a side elevation illustrating a slight modification.
1 indicates the body portion of a tight garment to fit the body and limbs of the wearer, and 2 the head portion. In lieu of the hood 2, a helmet maybe employed. The
garment is made from suitable elastic material, impervious to Water, and is lined on the inside with wool or like material to pro tect the wearer from cold.
1 indicates a keel which fits between the legs 5 of .the body portion of the garment, and extends well on the front. and rear, as clearly shown in the drawing. On the upper edge of the front and rear portions of the keel, are receptacles 6 and 7 filled with air or gas, to provide floats to sustaina person wearing the apparatus, in the water. These floats are held in position by straps 9, which extend from one float to the other, and over'the shoulders of the wearer. The floats'support cases 1010, which may contain food, or instruments to be used while the instrument is in use. The keel may be employed as a rudder to steer theuser in the water, and to facilitate the steering, I provide a lever 13, secured to the rear portion of the keel, and extending forwardly in convenient reach of the hands of the user. A frame 14:, extends upwardly on each side ofthe garment to a point some distance 1 above the head portion. To the lower ends of the frame are secured weights 15, and at the upper end is a sail 16. In lieu of the Patented Sept. 1, 1914.
. Application filedlebruary 24, 1913. ,ser'ia'ifno'. 750,407.
I sail may provide a propeller 17, located at the rear of the apparatus, and operated by any sultable means such asan electric air or gas motor conveniently located in the casing 18. I
. In operation, the user applies the body portionof the garment to his body, and because of the material being elastic the walls oftheopenings 20, at the top} will snugly fit the neck and, prevent ingress. of water. Then the head portion is applied, the lower edge of same engaging over the upper edge of the body portion and also fits the neck tight, and further prevents the admission of water. The garment having. been adjusted on the wearer, the straps and keel are adjusted and the apparatus is now in condition for use. When in the water the floats will sustain the weight of the body, and the wind contacting with the sail will oausethe person to move about, the direction of travel being controlled by manipulating the lever and keel. The weights steady the apparatus and tend to prevent forward or backward tilting.
The invention is extremely simple in 0011- struction, andis efl'ective in operation. In 1 comfort.
' In the garment above the crotch, are bags 40,- to receive liquid and solid refuse from the body. These bags may be opened from the inside, and pipes 11, lead to the exterior for draining purposes. The pipes may be controlled by suitable valves 42.
WVhat I claim is 1. An apparatus of the class described, comprising a garment, a keel, floats supported by the keel, means for'supporting the floats to the user of the garment, means for propelling the apparatus, and means for deflecting the keel to steer the apparatus.
2. An apparatus of the class described, comprising an elastic garment having leg portions, a keel fitting between the leg portions, floats supported on the keel, float supporting means extending over the shoulder" portions of the garment, means by which the apparatus may be propelled, and means for deflecting the keel to steer the apparatus.
3. An apparatus of the class described comprising an elastic garment having leg portions, akeel fitting between the leg portions, floats supported on the keel, float sup- 4:. An apparatus of the class described,
comprising an elastic garment composedof body and head sections to engage the person using the apparatus, said garment having a lining, a keel, floats mounted on the keel,
10 means for supporting the floats on the garment, a frame on the garment, and a sail carried by the frame.
5. An apparatus of the class described, comprising an elastic garment including leg 15 portions, a keel, floats, a frame supported on the elastic garment, sald frame extending down each leg portion o'f-the garment and above the latter, a sail on the upper portion of the frame, and Weights at the lower ends Copies of this patent maybe obtained for of the frame adjacent-the leg portionsto balance the apparatus.
.6. An apparatus or the "class described comprising a garment including leg portions, a keel extending between the leg portions,
floats on the opposite ends of the keel, straps extending from the floats and over the shoul- 'der portions of the'garment, a casing mounted on each float, an open frame extend ng down the leg portionsgof thegarment' and above the latter, and a sail at the'upper end of the frame. i Y
