The invention relates to railway rails, and
more particularly to the class or' rail joints known as scarf-joints.
' The primary obj eet of the invention'is'the.
provision of'arai'l' joint in whichthe meeting ends of railway rails may be expedi- `tiously united with each other, as the samev are placed upon the road-bed or ties, and that will be prevented from separation, or
the balls of the rails loweringwith respect i to each other, thereby avoiding the pounding of car wheels when passing over the j oint.
` -`vision of a rail oint, in which the meeting `be hereinafter morev provision of l a perspective view of ends of rails may be readily. and easily fastened together, so as to avoidlateral displacement of such meeting ends, yand also prevent* the sagging yof one'rail with respect I to the other.
Ay further objectief c a rail rjoint'which 1s simplein construction, efficient in` its purpose, andensibling the rails to ther objects in view, the
fully4 described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, `and pointed out in the'claims hereuntoappended.
In the drawings :y 'Figure 1 is a side eleva-A tion of a rail joint constructedin raccord.-l ance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing therailsseparated. Fig. 3 is one rail end, the other rail end being detached therefrom. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the other rail end. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line -gof Fig. 1. Fig.l 6 is a 6-6 of Fig. 1. g i
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding yparts throughout the4`v several views of the drawings.-
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 andy 6 designate the meeting ends of frailway rails which are or the usual well-known construction, eXceptxa's `to. their joints, the said rails being spikedlin the otv which ythe i 'socket or recess Another object 'of the invention is the Qp'rodepending locking i lug` 15,
thev invention isthev be manufactured at a minimum expense. i l With these and invention consistsy in theconstruction, coma bination and arrangementjof parts, as will sectional view on the line i other.
prevented from usualk manner l superimposed upon-.any suitably4 prepared rroad-bed, if desired. 'The adjoining ends of the Vrails and 6 are provided with thickened webs S, so as .to provide for the special shape and construction ofsaid ends, presently de` scribed.y v flanges and balls'or treads thereof, raredi- A"agonally kcutor severed at reverse anglesto form spectively,`while the `thickened web 8 of the` rail `5isformed'with beveled vor` 4inclined vshoulders 11 at opposite sides oia medial beveled abutment ` faces 9 and 10, re-
inclined locking tongue 12, the latter being adapted to `fit in a .13 formed inthe thickened webS of the rail 6, the lsaidthickened porto the ties 7.# l.'I-Irowever, the rails may be` The rails `5.*and 6, at the base correspondinglyl shaped tion being provided with beveled ysurfaces y111` at opposite sides et the groove or recess 13, so as to engage 12`ofthe rail 5 is fitted the beveled shoulders 11 when the tongue `within the recess ori groove 13 inthe" rail 6 for thejoining thereof.4 i
Formed on the under .face of the projected portions of the yball of vthe rail 6 is the latter being fa'dapted to engage 1n a correspondingly shapedA socket' 16 ormedinthe upper face vof thethickened ,web 8 rearwardly of the tongue12. `-Thelug 15, 'when vengaged in the socket 16, will prevent the separation of the rail ends, `as will rbe clearly obvious. Formed in the tongue 12 is a suitable bolt receiving opening 17 I which is adapted to aline or register with' similar bolt receiving openings 18 formed" in the thickened web 8 loi the rail 6,fand4 intersecting the recess 16 therein, and adapted to be inserted in these openings 17 and18, when in alinement with eachother, is'afbolt member 19, there- .i by` securely fastening the meeting ends of vthe rails together. l
yIn the construction of a 'rail joint, as heretofore described, itis unnecessary to user sh plates or a plurality of boltmembers for securing the meeting ends y of `the rails together, and there will'be no possibility 'of detached from j.
105 with respect to each the rail ends will be A anylateral displacement or the rails becoming `loose yor eachother, nor will the ballsk or treads of the rails sag or lower i Furthermore,
separation.
Wl'iat is claimed is:
1. In a rail oint, a pair of rail ends having their' base "liianges and balls provided other railV end for Webs of the seid railends r.being provided one of said Webs -be-` -With inclined surfaces, j lng provided vvitli a recess, a tongue formed on the inclined surface of the Web of they other rail and engageable in the` recess, 'a bolt me adjacent Walls of the recess receiving tlne same for locking the rail ends together, one of said rail Vends being provided with a socket, and a depending flocking lug on `the engagement in the socket to hold the rail .ends joined. i 2. In a rail joint, n pair of rail endseacli having its ball and base reversely beveled `the web,
niber passed through the tongue :and
the `other web and engagea'ble in said groove, the ball of one rail being extended beyond 4the -ba-lfl of the other rail being retracted from the free edge of its web, Where- 'byon the joining of the Webs of the rails the projected portion of tlie ball of one rail Will overlie the web of the other rail, a, lug depending ,from :the projected lp mation for' the ball of one rail and engageable with the nn- Iderlying Web of'tlie otlierrail, .and .ngbolt member vpassed tlnonghthe side Walls of the groove in Aone -`web and engageable in the tongue on rtheother web. j j
