Application filed December 16, 1913. "Serial No. 807,149.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER Pnorrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mancelona, in the county of Antrim and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements iii Steam-Engine Reversing-Gears, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates tosteam engine reversing gear, the object in view being to produce a simple and effective reversing gear for steam engines, doing away with a number of operating parts of the reversing gine showing the reversing gear of this ining fork.
vention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the link and its operat- Beferring to the drawings '1 designates the engine base, 2 the cylinder, 3 the steam chest, & the steam supply pipe and 5 the throttle valve casing.
. 6 designates the crank shaft which in carrying. out the present invention has fast thereon, a cam disk 7 provided in one face thereof with a cam groove 8.
9 designates the crosshead guide, 10 the sliding crosshead reciprocating therein and 11 the connecting rod interposed between the sliding cross head and the crank shaft.
ln'carrying out the present invention, the valve operating link 12 which is coupled to the slide valve stem 13 by means of a connecting rod 1% is provided with a double fork 15 extending in a direction substan-' tially perpendicular to the major axis of the link l2,v said link being pivotally mounted at the point 16 on a suitable supporting post or bracket 17. The fork 15 is provided with two sets of slots 18 and 19, one set of slots being adapted to receive one end of a link rocking lever 20 while the other are designed to receive pins 21 extending laterally from oppositesidesof the lever 20.
The lever 20 is fulcrumed at the point 22 iii-- termedlate its ends on a suitable fulcrum post 23 and is provided at itsouter extremity with a pin or roller 21 which moves lengthwise of the cam groove 8 inthe disk 7 above referred to, thus producing a rocking move mentv of the lever 20 and causing the opposite end thereof to lmpart a rocking movement to the. fork 15 andhence to thevalve operating link 12. I 1 The connecting rod 14L is formed with a longltudinal slot 2511 111011 receives a 13111011 a vertically movable rod 26 which is at .tached to the short arm 27 of an elbow lever, the other and longer arm 28 of said lever being provided with an operating han- 7 die 29 and a thumb latch 30 which engages the teeth of a segmental rack 31 fastened to a stationary part of the engine.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, .it will now be seen that by movingthe lever .29 infone direction or the other along the rack 31, the connecting rod 14 is moved to either end of the link 12, thesaid connectingrod 14 carrying a sliding block 32 movable lengthwise of and within the link 12. In this Way the slide valve may be reversed and the direction of rotation of theengine correspondingly reversed whenever found necessary; One Or more suitable guides 33 may be provided to direct and steady therockin'g movement of the lever 20, one of such guides be- :set of slots i v Specification of Letters jPatent. ing shown as fastened to the crosshead guide 9.
what I claim is In reversing gear for vsteamengines, the
combination with the steam cylinder, cross head guides, steam'valve and crank shaft, of a cam disk fast on said crank shaft and provided with a cam groove, a valve operating link fulcrumed on the cross head guide and having its axis parallel to the axis of said crank shaft, a connecting rod between sald link and the stem of SitlCl valve,
a fork extending laterallyfroin said link and provided with two slots intersecting the point of engagement between said rod each other at right angles, a link rocking and the valve Operating link. 10 lever having one end slidable in one of said In testimony whereof I affix my signature slots and a pin; slidable in the other slot-0f in presence of two witnesses.
said fork and the'other end provided with a LUTHER PROF ITT. runner working in said cam groove, and a Witnesses:
reversing thumb latch lever operatively con- H, NYE LMAN,
neoted with said connecting rod for shifting H. F. PROFlTl.
